I took a tour of Gettysburg's haunted orphanage on March 25, 2022, and I had so much fun! I'm skeptical when it comes to ghosts, but that didn't hinder my enjoyment of the tour at all. James, our tour guide, made the tour enjoyable for people who fully believed in ghosts and skeptics like myself. He kept all of us thoroughly entertained, engaged and spooked the entire time. He was great at sharing the ghost stories, and sharing the history of the area around and inside the building. My tour group was smaller (there were about a dozen of us), and there were two kids on the tour who would not stop talking the entire time. However, James was a real champ with how he dealt with it. While he was respectful of the kids, he also kept us on track, which is a necessary skill in a tour guide. It was fascinating to learn about what happened at this orphanage and how the ghosts of the children still haunt the premises. Although I didn't see anything out of the ordinary, when it came to seeing orbs or figures on the photos I took during the tour, I still enjoyed the tour a lot. Highly recommend!

Mike, the ghost tour guide.

Mike was a fantastic guide. He really made the ghost walk a creepy experience by his retelling of events. Highly recommend.

We did the 8pm orphanage tour. Eric was our guide and he was amazing. The tour is approximately 1.5 hours long. It starts on the outside for the first half and stays within a block or so of the building. Without giving any spoilers here is how it breaks down. He explained about some of the residents experiences during the battle and how at each location ghosts have been seen. It's a nice trip into some of the lesser known facts. Then we moved inside for the second half. You enter into a grand room that they aren't too sure on how it was used at the orphanage. Next is a small room where all the children (approximately 100) were all fed at once. Then you head into the cellar. FYI the stairs are steep and not very wide as per the time. We were told about some of the atrocities that were committed down there. Lastly you head into "the pit" where the worst atrocities happened. This was an amazing experience that was entertaining, informative and spooky all at once. Eric has a great ability in his storytelling and is very funny and loves interacting with the group.

We did the Jennie Wade house tour last night. Our guide, Maria, was in character as Jennie's sister and really made the tour fun, funny and informative. We went into the Wade house, the cellar, heard dozens of stories from a first person perspective, totally cool! We have done lots of tours but hers was undoubtedly one of our favorites! I highly recommend this tour and Maria!

Tour guide Michael

Highly recommend! We did both the orphanage & Jennie Wade House tours. Both were great, but Michael did a phenomenal tour of the orphanage. Totally in character (or maybe just himself? Hard to tell), & the tour didn't feel hokey at all. He had his mannerisms and stories spot on the entire time. Was a great start for our honeymoon down to the bay.

One afternoon in Gettysburg, my men went fly fishing so I found myself with a rare day to myself…read more I was a little wary about taking a tour. The day before we had taken a private tour of the battle field and it was so boring that I kept dozing! However, when I studied my options and read about Gettysburg Licensed Town Historians, the walking tour became more appealing. You see, I was tired of hearing about "the battle" itself. However, these Historians specialize in tours regarding civilian accounts and stories about the battle, occupation, and aftermath. The "Historian" tours are 90 minutes and cost $25 (students 9-17 $20 & children 8 and under are free). They offer a "General Walking Tour", as well as specific topics specializing in Architecture, Black History, Lincoln's Visit, "Mystery & Tragedy", and Eisenhower. The specific topic that sparked my interest was "The Unsung Heroes: The Civilian Ladies of Gettysburg". Luckily, since I did not have a car that day, the "Historian" office was conveniently located steps from my B&B on Lincoln Square. I was assigned to Susan, whose family had been living in Gettysburg for generations (yes, prior to "the battle"). I happened to be the only participant in the tour so in effect I got a private tour for $25. Even though it was it was just me, Susan did not skimp on any time, information, or enthusiasm! We walked the streets of Gettysburg and Susan told about what the town of Gettysburg was really like during the mid 1800s and what life was like for its inhabitants. She told stories about the individuals and characters who lived there, making them come to life as we passed the houses and places where they lived and worked. Susan concentrated on the women and stories of their bravery and sacrifice. Susan also put a personal spin on the tour by telling stories of her own ancestors who were living in Gettysburg at the time of the Civil War. So I was able to have fun while learning and get a little exercise at the same time! If you are visiting Gettysburg I strongly suggest touring the town and not just the battlefield. To help you do this, I highly recommend the passionate story tellers at Licensed Town Historians to give you a picture of what life was like for civilians in 1863.

The pros: The staff is awesome. They get 6 stars. They did a great job explaining safety and how to handle the horse. This is extremely helpful for those with no riding experience. They provide helmets and a radio receiver with an earbud to listen to some canned recording explaining some background of personnel, battles, and music. You get to ride right next to some historic buildings and farmhouses that you wouldn't be able to on a road or bus tour. The cons: Unless you get a certified guide, they are not allowed to narrate the history of the battle as you ride along the trail. We did not have a guide along with our group for the ride so it was fairly quiet most of the ride. Unless you are very well versed with the locations of the army units and battle locations, the ride might be a bit confusing. If you can tie this into the end of a visit to Gettysburg with the museum, film, bus or car tour, then it will be a blast.

These guides are highly trained and specialized and insanely knowledgeable- we had excellent discussion and so much in depth learning about the battlefield as we trotted along. The carriage is Victorian style and very comfortable- and ours was pulled by two gorgeous Percheron mares, Kate and Trina - sisters!! They were so beautiful and so sweet! Sarah and Bogey (sp??) were our our drivers and they were so great to the horses and very skilled at handling anything that came up. Our guide was Chris and he was just incredible- I'd be shocked if there was anything he didn't know about Gettysburg lol!! Even his ancestors were part of the battle! Not only did he provide tons of info about the ins and outs of the battle, but he also dropped fun little pearls of trivia along the way - things like how the shapes of certain monument bases have different meanings and how the "avenues" were put in for tourists lol!! The guides have to pass a rigorous learning/testing regime to even be able to do the tours so you know they know their stuff! The tour is totally fun - but also treated with the utmost respect for the gravity of the subject - so many lives lost - such a tragic and heavy piece of history. I strongly urge anyone to take a guided tour on your visit - interacting with such knowledgeable guides really helps get a better understanding of the battle and the core issues etc. The tour starts in town at the Gettysburg Heritage Center - very easy to find and plenty of parking. They pick you up in the carriage right out front and off you go! The tour lasts around 2 hours and they let you interact with the horses afterwards if you want! Can't recommend it enough!!

Pros: * The guide was a decent story teller…read more * The covered bridge provided feelings of paranormal activity. The history of the covered bridge is very interesting. Cons: * Overly priced, particularly in comparison to similar tours. * The tour was supposed to start at 8:30pm. My group was all present prior to 8:30pm. We finally left the parking lot for our first destination at 8:47pm. * Only three locations are offered, all of which are available to the public already. * One of the locations that the tour guide boasted about being exclusive to their company was literally a public dog park. * The lack of passion and engagement displayed by the guide and co-guide was disappointing. * Despite starting nearly twenty minutes late, we also ended twenty minutes early. Not a single participant stayed until 11:30. I believe this was because our tour ended at the dog park. Although they indicate there are 52(ish) acres to investigate, all that is truly accessible is the path that goes around the dog park. The guide doesn't even guide you. They simply set up their "base camp" at one of the picnic shelters. During the entire walk around the park path, you could even hear the guide and co-guide conversing. * When listening to the spirit box with headphones, the guide claimed they're noise canceling. I listened to the spirit box with them and could hear people up to three feet away. Ironically when the co-guide was receiving answers from the spirit box after the main guide would ask questions, the two were sitting about three feet apart most of the time. Also, once I mentioned to the main guide that I could hear conversations through the headphones and that they didn't appear to be noise canceling, only the co-guide was permitted to use them from that point on. That made me very suspicious and I am NOT skeptical about the paranormal at all. All in all, I would not recommend this tour or company based on the price they charge and the overall lackluster experience. In addition the tour is advertised as "advanced," yet there is nothing truly advanced about walking along a park path with a plastic K2 meter.

My daughter and I drove from MD to Gettysburg and was highly disappointed. We were on the 8:30-11:30 tour and was supposed to arrive to the meeting spot 10 minutes early. The GPS was not very helpful and we arrived 8:25. There was no one in the parking lot. We saw a few cars and thought maybe we should follow. I called the number on my confirmation to see if I was going the right way. The person was very helpful and we met up with the group. No one greeted us and we weren't even sure we were in the right spot. We ended up asking a couple of youtubers that were more helpful than the actual group. The tour guide not once acknowledged us. She only talked to a couple of people in the group. It was a very small group and there was no reason for her not to interact with us. My daughter tried asking her a question and she ignored her. When it was time to go to the next location she didn't say anything. Next location it was the same way. My daughter asked others questions and was completely ignored. No one checked to see if we were supposed to be there so essentially I could've just shown up without even paying. I wasted my money on this very unorganized tour. They really should do better. I've seen some really good reviews and either they are all fake or they are from the people who this tour guide actually talked to. If this was free than I could see this being as unorganized as it was. Other paranormal tours I've been on were larger groups and much more organized and interesting than this. Maybe it was this tour guides off night but being a paid tour I expect way better than what we got. Highly DO NOT recommend doing anything with After Dark Investigations.
