Private Tour, what I paid for but did not receive. Whatever. Lesson learned.
Tara K.

Since the business owner felt the need to argue with me on what I paid for, here is the proof. I have attached the email that specifically states "private tour". I had forgotten about this disappointing waste of my money, but after my memory being jogged by this needless reply, here is an update. I will not be returning for another tour. My reviews are honest and I feel no need to lie. Thank you.

Great facilities. We came to see a movie, they had the projector on the stage. The movie started…read moreat 7:30pm, but they start seating at 6:45pm. I would suggest getting there right when they start seating if you're particular about finding a good seat. They do not show movie previews before the movie. We got our tickets online, however, when you arrive, you still have to go to the box office on the left after entering to get your paper tickets. They have snacks and beverages on the 1st floor. They offer a shot of alcohol in your hot cider or hot cocoa at the 1st floor concession stand. If you want beer or wine, you have to go to the concession stand upstairs. I believe the concession stand prices were a bit more reasonable than a normal movie theatre. The lines are long but they move super fast and the staff is phenomenally nice. We parked on the street and downloaded the parking meter app. They have a parking garage that is super close and I sort of wish we parked there. Will definitely return.

Went to Gettysburg specifically to see A Christmas Carol, presented by Totem Pole Theater group…read more The play itself was very good for a small company. The theater itself was very nice with it's history, reminiscent of the small local movie theater I grew up with. Now the reason for only 3 stars was due to someone thinking that selling popcorn in paper bags was a good idea! During the first half of the play it was so annoying hearing the crunching and rustling of the paper bags. It's not like it was a movie that had loud speakers but it was during a play with live, speaking actors. Thankfully there wasn't anyone with in a few rows of us with popcorn. As loud as the bags were, I couldn't imagine sitting next to someone eating popcorn. Really a bad idea. Take away the popcorn or at least sell in cardboard tubs and the experience would have been sooooooo much better.

Erin, our tour guide was very pleasant and patient (we had kids with inquiring minds in our group)…read more The tour was about 45 mins long, very informative and obviously not rushed as this was a small house. The museum store seemed to have been the cheapest too! Definitely buy your magenta here and not the national museum (double the price!) Went on a Sunday and last tour of the day was at 3:15. Take all the pics but no videos, all good!

This venue takes its history seriously, and for a good reason. The Jennie Wade at the center of…read morethis story is the only civilian killed during the Battle of Gettysburg. Because of this, the museum makes a point of telling you that they are NOT going to talk about the haunted history of the house. The original curators of the house didn't want that to be part of its function, and so current management continues that tradition. No ghost hunting is allowed, and they are serious about that. No shenanigans. You will be watched; a head count is taken at every room stop in the house. Seriously. It is a strict tour that never doubles back, so get your photos and ask your questions in the moment. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of history new to those familiar enough with the story to want to specifically go see it. Lady Matilda had read a lot on the subject, but this tour hit the highlights and fact-checked material, mixing in 'facts of life' from living in the 1860s for color. Aside from the well-preserved bullet holes, there's not a lot of authenticity to the house. The fact that a big, monstrous-looking hotel on a busy road never allows you to feel transported in any way. If you've never heard the story, it is a compelling one, so I recommend going in cold. It is important history, largely lost to what is probably a mix of so many stories happening in those three incredible days and newspapers that spun her story. Normally, I'd say $16 a head ($12 for kids 6-12 is a bit pricey for the kind of tour we had, but the importance of preserving this history outweighs the price-value concern I had. This piece of history is surrounded by modern tourism. When you know what happened on that acre on those days in 1863, you may feel ashamed that they paved over it for tchotchke shops and ice cream stands. Accessibility is something to also consider. There are three sets of steep stairs to access chapters of the story. We had a nice elderly woman who couldn't make it to the basement for the final story and sat it out on the "patio" next to the hotel. We listened to heavy traffic for about 15 minutes together. Ironically, while waiting in mid-October for the tour, the gift shop was stuffed with ghost books and Halloween swag, which kind of set a tone for the experience. Placing zombies and skeletons in a Civil War theme next to a pile of creepy Jennie Wade stuffed dolls really contradicts that "no ghosts" vibe of the tour guide.
