Warm ups were challenging. I really enjoyed the training style. Everyone was super helpful and patient. If I lived here I would 100% train here and have it be my home. I learned a lot. Rolling with all belt levels was very challenging and it was obvious they were rolling at my level so I would learn. I can't say enough good about this place. Just signed my kids up here. Tried several martial arts studios and this is the one they liked best. Very comfortable atmosphere. Very reasonable rates. Looking forward to a long time here with all my children. The only downside is that you have to sign a contract. I'm no fan of contracts for extra curricular activities. They were the only Dojo that required a contract from all the ones I went to. But, at the end, I think it will be worth the written commitment. Updating my review. After a month of my kids training here this place deserves the 5 stars. Sammy and Rachel (Sammy's daughter and Kids Instructor) are just amazing with the kids. They are genuine in their attitude and concern, the instruction is fun and educational and most important, my kids HAVE A BLAST! They literally are looking forward to every Jiu Jitsu day. Both my kids have been in TKD since age 3. My 9 year old just got his 1st Degree BB and my 8 year old her brown, and although they liked their school, they were NEVER this excited about training. While the coaches and classes were great, I cannot recommend this studio due to the lack of ethical treatment they gave me during the pandemic. I was coming to this place daily pre-covid, going 2-3 times a day, forking over the maximum payments with no missed payments, but as soon as the flu hit and I got laid off my job and the studio closed down, they continued to charge me throughout the entire year. While I did not mind it at first, it got to a point where I had to tried to talk to them on the regular, calling, emailing, and DMing on Instagram, but to no avail, no response on either. Only when threatened with going to small claims court did they ease up, but now they have continued to pursue my credit. While I understand covid has hit everyone roughly, it does not excuse the fact that this studio has continually charged me for a contract that is basically moot. Do take note that I had a grandmother, father, and mother who are high-risk, and I have already lost an aunt to Covid, so while it reopened back in June, I will admit I went twice, but I then stopped for the sake of my family, but in no way, nor shape or form, does the contract state anything about a global pandemic, precautions, nor anything along the lines, but instead of talking to me and helping me out with said issues, they decided to leave me in the dark with a debt collection company breathing down my neck. I am a 20 year old college student barely making ends meet in a stagnant time-period, and they did not once take into account at all who I was behind the card. Keep in mind I went EVERY DAY except Saturdays, and this is how they treated me. There was a facade of being a team, that these coaches cared about who you were and how to hone your ability as a martial artist, but it all turned out to be a lie. While what was taught was undoubtably top-tier, the bloodsucking tactics they used to extort money out of me completely stole any semblance of loyalty I may have had for this place. Take your money somewhere else, where they value your worth as not only a student, but as a fellow human being. read more

Okay, another biased review for a hole in the wall gym I train at. I'm proud to say that we at Rodrigo's, have the best looking instructor in the Brazilian Jujitsu industry. But that's just a side note. We're no longer located in Walnut, but off Grand Ave. in Covina. The facility is not the largest, but the training you get there is top notch. Rodrigo places lots of emphasis on submissions. Practice is as follows... 15 minute warm-up, 3 techniques, drilling, and finally sparring. Rodrigo is somewhat of an Americanized brazilian, and will not kick you off the mat after practice. (If you're lucky, we sometimes go to BJ's for a beer.) Come by with good intentions to learn, or get jacked up trying to be Mr. Tough Guy. Practice is held on Mondays, tuesdays, wednesdays, fridays and saturday, with judo taught in between. read more

If you are looking for an BJJ academy for yourself or your child, look no further. The quality instruction you and your child will recieve in this academy is impeccable and insurmountable. My husband and daugther trains here. The husband started in 2007 left for 1 1/2 year, and went back in 2009. My daugther has been training, since spring 2010. I have seen much improvement in both of them. As for me, after 3 years of convincing to train, I finally started. Thanks to the new programs for different types of bjj students. As a parent, I have to say your child will learn humilty and discipline, as well as make new friends. The kids who come here are good kids and the instructors are great with them. They will learn fundamentals, and it will be reinforced throughout the sessions. They also get a chance to spar with each other. There is a good balance between drills and sparring. The academy is a well balanced organization with great leadership! It is great organization to be a part of. I do notice one thing about the students in this academy, they are humble and commited. Rodrigo is one of the coolest most down to earth people youll ever meet. He is very patient and makes sure to personally take time to show each person the techniques he is showing if they are confused. There aren't many martial arts classes, especially bjj classes, where you can get one on one training from a world class bjj instructor. The class is set up so all belt levels are together, which gives great oppertunity to roll with white, blue, purple, brown, and black belts. There are also people of all sizes which is great. Ok so this is my first review. I knew i had to post a review. This place is one of the most funnest places EVER. I went in just to ask about it and met the instructer Rodrigo and winded up signing up imediately! It is a great way to get in shape, leran to fight, etc. The people i their are very welcoming. If they notice a new person they imediatly begin to train you and show you the basics. I have only been in there for a week absolutely love it! Even the instructor is very cool, he talks to you just like your a friend he's known for a while. The class has already improved my strength, endurance, technical skill, etc. ALthough it is a bit small it kind of adds to the community feeling. There is also a U12 class for the smaller kids. The class usually strts off with like a half an hour work out which is EXTREMELY tiring. CHages like every day almost. SOmetimes you'll do like 75 butterfly crunches sometimes you'll do double! Afterwards Rodrigo will show a technique, have you practice with a partner. You'll do that 3-5 times usually. Then, you'll do 5 or 6 minute spars one after another. It gets VERY tiring and hot in there so bring water for sure. It's a great class for anyone. If your weak, this will strengthn you. This helped me beat my cousin whos been taking MMA for alost 4 months lol! BTW: cut your nails if you plan on coming cuz ppl could cut others on accident. read more

So this is my first official review on Yelp, I'll try to make it a good one. I've been training here for about a month twice sometimes thrice a week. The classes usually begin with a 15-20 minutes warm up(more like a workout) you'll most likely be soaked in sweat by then(unless you're a slacker) After that, head instructor Rodrigo would teach us 3-4 techniques and we'll be working with a partner to practice those techniques. And then, we'll drill the techniques with our partners by switching roles; one attempting the submission, the other defending against it. Finally everybody will roll/spar against someone for 20-30 minutes. By the end of the class, you should be pretty tired and beat. FYI, come by about 20 minutes after the posted schedule time on the website (www.brazilianjiujitsu.net) Otherwise you'll be just waiting outside of the dojo. I respect Rodrigo a lot because he is very sincere and humble, AND he's damn good at what he teaches. He absolutely doesn't power trip or talk down on students with a cocky attitude like some instructors do. He also remembered my name by the second class. If it's your first time, make sure to bring at least a liter or two of water or Gatorade, because you'll need it! If there's one thing I want Rodrigo to improve is to sanitize the mats more frequent. We stopped going and attempted to talk to them about canceling our contract and they didn't care about one thing we had to say. Buyer beware here. They won't work with you when it comes to money. Well, what can I say about this place? Quite a bit it turns out. First thing is don't judge a book by it's cover. I learned my lesson. I trained Muay Thai competitively in my 20's. Being 34 I was looking for something less abusive on the body and I missed my wrestling days in high school. I have trained Jiu Jitsu at 3 other places, most for a trial period and another for about 3 months with my 2 daughters I went to Rodrigo's first to compare it to the other surrounding academies. I did some research on him and noticed he had many victories over a lot of top pro competitors in the sport in both GI and No GI competition. He also had MMA titles to his name as well. Against my wife's judgment, I decided to try another Academy for 3 months because Rodrigo's place was so small and very old school with old school aesthetics like most good gyms do. I should have listened to my instincts and my wife, the other gym I went to see was huge and beautiful and had all the toys, that was the biggest 3 months of wasted time ever. The instructors were horrible showed you a technique never even checked to see if you were doing it correctly, the workouts had me barely breaking a sweat and there was no sense of camaraderie in the gym. Besides the fact that if you were late to class the instructor made you do push ups, and had to ask to go to the bathroom or to leave early. Ask really? I'm 34 I've had enough of that. OK enough about the old place. While I was still enrolled at the other place, I enrolled my 2 daughters 5 and 8 at Rodrigo's because it was much closer to my house and the other place had 30 kids in the class and they ended up sparring maybe 5 minutes a week out of 2 hour and a half classes which I thought was a waste of time and money. first impression of Rodrigo's the place is so laid back, the atmosphere is inviting and the guy gives everyone a hug when you walk through the door. At Rodrigo's my kids get so much more attention since the class size for kids is never more than 12 kids and Rodrigo runs the class himself usually with a helper. The kids learn different techniques every day. Rodrigo makes sure every detail is performed correctly in a very light and nurturing way. The kids drill that technique then spar for about 20 minutes with different kids each class. Long story short, my oldest daughter has competed in 3 tournaments placing top 3 in 2 of them. OK now on to me and m. After noticing my kids were learning more than me and at a faster rate, I ended up taking Rodrigo up on his offer of training for a week free of cost while I was still enrolled at the other academy. My first impression? Again the environment was laid back and stress free. If you are late? no big deal and no grief . Have to leave early ? So what. The differences to other Jiu Jitsu schools? Everyone is friendly and will always help you. You get to roll with higher belts if you're a newbie to learn and they help you along. The membership of people are respectful. The guys here are free to train on there own at the Academy at any time, open mat is every day for members. Members are never out to hurt someone like I have seen at other gyms and they don't beat the new guys to hell. You will roll for about 25 to 30 minutes if you want to, and that's how you learn what is applicable and what isn't in this martial art, by trying it out. You will get in top shape in no time, or you are free to just watch and spar as much as you can tolerate with no pressure from anyone. Needless to say I learned more in a week than I was learning in a month at the other place. Besides that I got to spar a lot more and Rodrigo never watched the clock to see when he would finish. If you ever have a question on ANY given technique he'll take the time to explain it to you before after or during class. I received my blue belt from Rodrigo after being here for 9 months. In that nine months I competed in 4 tournaments as a white belt. 3 gold medals and one bronze including 1st place at American nationals. 1 silver as a blue belt so far at the world Jiu Jitsu No GI championship last weekend which is one of 2 of the largest Jiu Jitsu tournaments in the united states each year. Training here also put me in good enough shape to complete the Los Angeles Triathlon's Olympic division, a few of us from the Academy did it together. For the size of the school everyone that competes usually always places which is rare for a small gym but it does not surprise me. Since the gym seems to have the recipe for success without a meat head type of environment. I have made some great friends being here on a personal level. Since Rodrigo is a humble and respectful person and a blast to be around, despite his achievements in Jiu Jitsu and MMA. He seems to attract the same type of people to train at his place. Joining this team was the best decision I ever could have made. I came in three years ago with my brother haven't left since. The people here are very friendly and welcoming; there's no room for egos and respect and care for one another reigns supreme. We push each other to improve everyday. The coaches and Sensei work very hard with you to help you in your BJJ journey. A number of years ago, my daughter asked to take a class in martial arts so I enrolled her in one of the well known karate dojos in our area. We were very disappointed because it was one of the "mills" where they are constantly "testing" the kids (for a $35 fee of course) and demanding that the kids enter tournaments ($100 or so entry fee). We decided to try another place and fortunately fate smiled on us and we went to Rodrigo's studio near our house. I will never forget our first visit. It was small, and it had to be at least 100 degrees in the studio. But one thing I noticed was that even though everyone was exhausted and sweating profusely, they were all smiling, laughing, and obviously were enjoying the class. After they finished, we met with Rodrigo and I knew this was the place for my daughter. What a gentleman, so respectful and, well just a very happy guy!
