This is the best Jiu Jitsu class because they truly focus on teaching. I've tried other places where it's mostly about fun. I don't want to spend money, especially time, driving and waiting for my kid for a Jiu Jitsu class just for fun. But here, after just one free class, I didn't hesitate to sign up for a year. They really teach things even from the first class. I really like the coaches here, especially Mr. Albert. We did a trial class today to see if this is a good program for our son to be a part of. It was a great experience at the trial class. Coach Albert was very professional and accommodating. A loaner gi was supplied and was very impressed on the 1 hour class that we attended. The full hour was full work. Sessions were timed and there was a lot of info and the kids were kept engaged. I don't even know where to begin. BJJ will change your life! I first started practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu about a year and a half ago and I can honestly say it has been one of the best decisions I've made in my life. I got the bug and still addicted to it. I've trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for over 20 years, and earned my black belt several years ago. As a father of a five year old son, I naturally wanted him to be introduced to the art in the best way possible. My wife found professor Albert's school, and enrolled him. We made the decision for my wife to take my son to the classes- since I found it hard to watch my son from the sidelines without being an overbearing and critical father. I want to be clear and honest with this review first and foremost. Jiu Jitsu is not for everybody. This is not the sort of class that you decide not to go to because you're tired or you just don't feel like going, it is expensive. You get out of it what you put into it in the long run. With that being said I have been training with Professor Alvarado for over a year now and am currently a white belt three stripe. Some people progress faster than others and some progress slower but again you get out of it what you put in. The class times are very convenient for working adults and offer class schedules for children as well. The learning environment that Professor Alvarado and his team of coaches create nurturers a sense of camaraderie and confidence that I have not felt since my days in the military. This school has been here for over four years now with no end in sight. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting everybody that goes to the classes yet but in this small amount of time that I've been there I have felt welcomed and in a sense somewhat like family. There are a few schools in the area and I can't really speak for their programs but if you're looking for a great place that offers an excellent self-defense program then I highly recommend that you come in for a session to get your feet wet. Professor Alvarado's gym is one of the most well rounded grappling schools in the area. He has an extensive knowledge regarding the "old school" methods of classic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu but is very much up to date with modern day BJJ. Additionally, he places an emphasis on the stand-up portion of BJJ (judo throws + wrestling) as well as self-defense, both of which are commonly neglected in other schools. Training here will definitely push you physically but it is absolutely a safe environment to do so. There are no egos between teammates; Professor Alvarado makes sure that there is a competitive but safe atmosphere when it comes time to roll so that you do not worry about other people going overboard and injuring you. They are also very hospitable when it comes to brand new practitioners so do not be intimidated if you have never trained before. Professor Alvarado will always take time with you personally to build you up to a level where you can roll with others so you will not be thrown into the fire right away. The rest of the team shares the same attitude towards beginners. Overall, I recommend people from different levels of experiences (from rank novices and above) to stop by and train. This place is a bit small also very pricy, over 100 a month. Also the sons of the teacher get easily promoted without the required skills, while all the students that work hard get milked for their money, hey I guess the more you stay in a belt class the local her you pay. The teacher will claim all these fictional stories that usually involved him and his out of shape kids, stories that say how dominant they are and that kind of thing. My child dominated kids that where there for years, he was only a white belt at the time. This place is good at making sure you pay. First off I wanna say I am giving this place a five star rating, here is my story as to why. I currently work the night shift at my job and sometimes walking to the parking structure is pretty dangerous and even though they have cameras I don't always feel completely safe. One night I felt someone was following me so I ran to my car, I locked the doors started my car and my heart was racing that is when I knew I had to learn something to defend myself. I was talking to my cousin about my situation and he mentioned this location that he trained at he explained the benefits behind professor Albert and his women self defense class so I decided to check it out. When I got to the location don't get me wrong I was scared never did anything like this before but I loved how the place was clean, the people were very welcoming, very family orientated, and man did I learn a lot. After taking professor Albert class I knew I had to come back. I loved how he broke down very move and explained the purpose behind everything. After the class my cousin asked how I liked it and I told him I loved it and I can't wait to go back. LEGIT is probably the first word that comes to mind. Professor Albert is a real old school black belt (earned it from Master Caique). By old school, i mean that he knows his definitely knows jiu jitsu and it's original purpose...as a martial art for self defense. I visited here a couple of times now and each time was welcomed with open arms. Everyone was friendly and nice. Place was spotless and mats were cleaned after training. I would love to visit more often but i hate traffic. It is about an hour drive for from the OC (about 30 without traffic) but each time was worth it. First time here was for open mat. Professor Albert showed a couple techniques. He explained everything well and gave a reason for doing so. He walked around and made sure everyone was doing it correctly. Afterwards, we got to roll. If you don't believe he's a black belt, just roll with him. I felt like it was my first bjj class all over again and i didn't know anything. I couldn't move unless he wanted me to and then it was a setup for a submission. When class ended, he gave me some advice and a few tweaks here and there to improve my game. I still use them today because they work! My second time here was for a seminar from Master Caique himself! How often do you get to learn from a BJJ Legend?!?!? Highly recommended!! professor Albert is a second degree black bekt in BJJ, I met him at OC Judo were we became good training partners(he is also a first degree brown belt in Judo). It was clear to me from the beggining his knowledge and skills on his ground game. He is a true martial artist with great discipline and respect shown on the mats. I have had my two kids, 7 and 5, at Caique for about a year now. It has been an exceptional experience. The school has a wonderful group of instructors and parents, all of whom help build a great sense of community, and this creates a great learning environment. The teachers all take time to ensure the progress of every student, and it really shows in their technique and effort. Professor Albert is a great communicator, and really knows how to make the classes enjoyable for the kids, while at the same time imposing discipline and focus. It really comes through in their technique and tenacity. When i first entered the school - i was amazed to see just how much effort the students put into their training, and how good they were! Beyond that, i noticed a camaraderie amongst them that showed they all took an interest in helping each other improve. After being a part of the school - i can see why that is. We transferred our son from the Lomita dojo just right before Covid. Was a little bit apprehensive because the Lomita school was awesome. Boy, was I wrong. Prof. Albert is just as awesome n then some. My son progressed so much in just within a year. Professor Albert has this teaching style that finds the happy medium between fun n discipline. He fosters a safe training environment n really nurtures the kids to feel comfortable sparring. All the drills in the world will not come close to the experience you get from sparring. A very friendly and encouraging space :) Everyone I've met here is just so kind and amazing. Professor Albert definitely knows what he's talking about and teaches not only self defense and BJJ technique, but also makes sure his students know about its history. I've made some great friends, who are constantly helping me with different escapes/submissions/self defense techniques and boosting my self esteem (i.e. telling me about strengths I didn't know I had: grips, sharp and therefore dangerous bones). I joined with my sister and the 2 of us (both female) were a bit intimidated at first, but Professor Albert helped us everyday we were there. I met Albert through my friend Ross and was invited to join them for open mat. Albert welcomed us as we walked through the door like we were family. (Ross was in the bathroom, like always). Open mat turned out to be mini self defense class which then turned into several 7-minute sparring sessions. I cannot recommend Caique Walnut and Professor Albert enough. With the popularity of BJJ in recent years many schools have popped up and yes you can learn some BJJ from them but with Caique Walnut there is a huge difference. The difference is the skill level at which it is taught and the lineage it comes from, Carlos "Caique" Elias (Google him). I have had my daughter train self defense here and my son has trained here and has gone on to compete in and place in several tournaments. He runs a great kids program. My son is 6 years old and has been training here for 10 months. I am amazed with what he has learned. I was so impressed with how well he instructed my son, I signed up here too. His adult classes are very good and he breaks down all of the moves very well, which makes it easier to understand.
