Harrisburg Academy - School Year Opening Ceremonies - K though 12 represented (2024-2025)

Our family has had a fabulous first year at Harrisburg Academy! We find the teachers and…read moreadministrators very responsive. The curriculum is exceptional. The values, educational emphasis, and vision of this school as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School are second-to-none. If you want the best for your child (K through 12), this is a terrific school! What I find exceptional about the school is the level of care of the teachers and staff. My child is not just a number. With small class size, the attention on each child is great. Teachers and staff members, who do not have my child in class, know him by name and greet him daily. There are plenty of school-wide activities that are wonderful to participate in, as a parent. It truly is not just a place to get an amazing education, it is a family of like-minded individuals, who want the best for their children and who want something more than the typical public school education. I'll finish with this: what sold me on the Academy is the emphasis on preparing "thinkers" for a world that is constantly-changing; they gear their education to teach children "how" to problem-solve, not just how to memorize for the test; they acknowledge the global-connectedness that our world is currently experiencing, and as such their philosophy is train the students to be prepared for the globally-connected workplace, not just how to graduate with a diploma. As a full-continuum International Baccalaureate (IB) World School they are preparing these children for the future. I want my child to be his best and have terrific educational opportunities. I have no doubt that that is what we are getting at the Harrisburg Academy. We hope to keep our son there through grade 12! I hope this review was helpful to you.

The best part is that parents can volunteer in the classroom without so many restrictions as public school. Background checks are required of course. With the new leadership I expect many great things to come at the academy. It has recently become an IB world school for all grades K-12 (not just a couple years in high school at other schools in the area). This is hands down the best preschool around so even if you end up moving your kids to public school in 1st grade you'll get your money's worth.

Overall, going to this school has been a very positive experience for me. Unlike schools like High…read moreRoad, this place has an environment based on love rather than fear, and the students thrive because of it. I feel like I have to mention High Road because of how bad of an experience I had there. I like to think maybe a parent considering that school may see this and reconsider. High Road was very cold and strict, the staff was almost inhuman, and violence was the answer to every problem their students had. The teachers here feel very human, and they very much care about their students. Their problems were de-escalated rather than escalated further. The students are so much less violent than that of High Road, but they obviously house the same type of kids. It may not be a perfect school, but it's leagues ahead of High Road in the way they treat their students. I was very hesitant to trust this school because of my experience with High Road, but I am very glad I did. For contrast, see my review on High Road here: https://www.yelp.com/biz/high-road-school-white-marsh?hrid=3CL5CogM4yfijlaBrssjGg&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct) I will add more to this review when I feel the need, but it is currently 12:24 AM and I'd like to sleep.

What's even more concerning is that this does not appear to be an isolated incident. Other family members and callers have reported being placed on hold for extended periods (15+ minutes) and then having their calls abruptly disconnected without explanation. If a patient is unavailable or there are communication restrictions, that should be clearly communicated. Repeatedly placing callers on hold and disconnecting calls creates unnecessary stress for families trying to check on their loved ones. For a facility that provides mental health care, a higher level of professionalism, communication, and empathy should be expected. unfortunately, my experience has not reflected that standard.

I would suggest getting there right when they start seating if you're particular about finding a good seat. They do not show movie previews before the movie. They offer a shot of alcohol in your hot cider or hot cocoa at the 1st floor concession stand. If you want beer or wine, you have to go to the concession stand upstairs. I believe the concession stand prices were a bit more reasonable than a normal movie theatre. The lines are long but they move super fast and the staff is phenomenally nice. The theater itself was very nice with it's history, reminiscent of the small local movie theater I grew up with. Now the reason for only 3 stars was due to someone thinking that selling popcorn in paper bags was a good idea! During the first half of the play it was so annoying hearing the crunching and rustling of the paper bags. It's not like it was a movie that had loud speakers but it was during a play with live, speaking actors. Thankfully there wasn't anyone with in a few rows of us with popcorn. As loud as the bags were, I couldn't imagine sitting next to someone eating popcorn. Really a bad idea. Take away the popcorn or at least sell in cardboard tubs and the experience would have been sooooooo much better.
