During the real estate boom, donations kept up with the need. That is no longer the case, you never know, you might be the one getting evicted next year or next month. The Beacon House needs canned foods, perishables, winter clothes, shoes, furniture, even cash. The number of addict who's lives have been permanently turned around who stayed at the Beacon House dwarfs what ever rehab track record any where in the area. Donate as much and as often as you can. The receptionist asked us to take a seat and not stand as I had requested, I intern asked if I could wash the seat off before I sat in it as someone had just left it. I also think the cleaning of the donation beds should be better in between clients. The one tech asked me why I cared so much and I told him there was a pandemic and I am a nurse and I care. I think they were glad when I left.

The center is clean and comfortable, and they go out of their way to make me feel appreciated for giving both my time and blood. I donated platelets for the first time ever at this center and that went very well. Though it is a two arm procedure that takes a few hours, the kind staff covered me in blankets and put on a movie for me with headphones. I also donated double red (power red) blood for the first time at this location and the staff were very attentive and helpful with that donation as well. Keep up the good work!

Maryland Food Bank thrives off of weekend volunteer hours for packers in their conveyor belt area to box canned goods and boxed foods as they'd otherwise have to bill these hours to payroll. I enjoyed myself and even got in a little cardio as the belt moved more and more foodstuffs through. I was in charge of canned veggies and boy were there lots of them. It was a good time and I can't wait to go back!

A few interesting facts: - They rescue neglected/abused animals including dogs, cats, potbellied pigs, and more. - Their operating costs are $25k + monthly - Must make an appointment for a visit or group tour - Some of the rescues they take in are animals that were previously used for racing, fighting, etc. Some of the cats & dogs came from animal hoarders. You will find that a visit to the farm is very humbling. For many of us, it's out of sight, out of mind when it comes to animal cruelty. We just don't think about it on a daily basis but when you visit the farm & hear the stories & see firsthand the effects of what these animals have been through, it can be life changing. Overall, a wonderful place to bring a group of kids, adults or just gather some friends for a fun & enlightening afternoon.
