It wasn't too bad, but as can be expected, there really isn't anything all that flash about it. Still, it was good, and they are licensed, so you can certainly get a drink there before going in to the show. Yeah, not too bad, but it does depend on what is playing there at the time.

There is a small sign "a not for profit artspace" above their door. Fortyfive Downstairs rents out their gallery space for artists who want an exhibition. And there are different exhibitions here every four or two weeks. Downstairs in the former textiles factory space there are two spaces for exhibitions and a theatre space. I haven't been to the theatre here yet. I must go sometimes as it has regular burlesque shows. Both the very large gallery space and the second smaller space have white walls, high ceilings and wooden floors. The exhibitions in these spaces will have, most likely, changed by the time that you read this so I won't tell you about the art that I saw. And the quality of the next exhibition depends mostly on the artist exhibiting but the gallery is also selective and exhibitions are generally of a high standard.

I probably should try to come here more often as this is one of those out of the way gems. Well,…read morenot quite, but it doesn't seem to pop up much where I tend to wander around (but then again that probably has more to do with me). In one part it is a night club, but in another way it is a bar. The atmosphere is ecstatic, and there are some pretty decent beers on tap. However, what I love about it is that it is one of those places that you enter by wandering in through a laneway (even though that laneway is now a restaurant). A great place to simply chill, or get down with it.

However it is rather loud in the restaurant bit with the floor boards so not a place for low talkers! Nice wine list and good service - we had a yarra valley Pinot Gris. I went with the special which was a Sardinian fish stew which was delicious and very full of seafood. Dinner companions had steak which got high marks as did the lamb rump. And definitely get the hand cut chips not the fries!

I brought my dad here for Father's Day lunch when the Town Hall Hotel was perhaps a week old. We sat in the bistro (no bar food for my dad, not on Father's Day at least) and every table was full of happy, chatty people, clearly enjoying their food. There was a real family atmosphere about the place but that may have been because of the particular day of the year that we were there. The bistro menu is made up of small, medium and large sharing plates, plus meats from the grill, sides and desserts. I remember the spicy quail, and I'm sure my dad does too - it was delightfully crispy-skinned with a touch of spice and lovely moist meat on the bone. The other Italian inspired dishes we tried were all delicious, although my dad did ask the waiter for Tabasco sauce, to which I offered a 'I'm sorry' look at the waiter. This is not a slight on the food as much as an insight into my dad's predilection for all things chilli. All in all, it was a a lovely lunch and I'm pretty sure that I'm now my dad's favourite offspring.
