The Wheeler Centre is government initiative gold. One of the things they've done where someone clearly knew what was needed and put money into the right hands.
I've been arguing for a long time that the arts; the writers, the musicians, the poets, the painters, the sculptors - you name it - need more support and recognition for their craft. There are people who campaign for this, but getting any kind of centre for public use (rather than a university or school) is hard.
The Wheeler Centre is just that for writers. There's a cafe with space to write and people to strike up a conversation with. There's the wriitng room to sit and think. There are numerous organisations renting rooms and running workshops, and everything is free or cheap.
I've seen writers speak on their books, on their craft, on the pitfalls of the career. I've seen readings and launches. It's a really special place. read more
