Seamus McPeake's Irish Pub is the local pub for the residents of Knox and surrounds. Hidden away in…read morea corner of Knox City Shopping Centre's Knox Ozone, it is a small venue which has the energy more commonly found in venues of the inner city. Among locals it is called "The Irish". A traditional irish pub in every sense it sports dark wooden furniture and a few booths at the back - perfect for a catch-up with mates. There are little nooks and crannies in every corner with all kinds of seating from bar stools, to benches to seats that double as small tables. Service is quick, but not quick enough when it comes to keeping the place clean - it is pretty grimy and the chances that someone will spill a drink on you are pretty high so I would caution against wearing your best clothes. Dress code is smart casual - just keep it simple. Entry is only $5 and drinks are relatively cheap too which is always a good thing. The place is busiest on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights and because of its size is packed full pretty quickly. There is an outdoor smokers area, which is tiny but it doesn't seem to deter patrons from crushing against each other in order to secure themselves some room out there. The dance floor is tiny but again, when there is a will there is a way and there are a lot of very willing dancers here. Patrons range in age from the very young to the very old although there tends to be more males than females.

Gotta love the brunny! Wednesday night's been a usual spot for me and my mates since we found out…read moreabout open mic night. Last semester a bunch of my international friends would muster up the courage after a few drinks to play but now I just go for the 10 dollar jugs & random acts. I don't come here enough seeing as it's literally only a block away but this will change once exams finish up. I'm super bummed I can't go tonight which is why I've decided to get the word out for any one who may be available. With the ram stop right outside theres no reason for anyone to pass up the opportunity to chill at the brunny. Go grab some cheap beer and head here for a comfy night lounging with live music ASAP! There are always random bands playing from around the area and it's always fun to hear new music. The best part though, yeah you didn't think it could get any better did you? Well, the best part is the beer garden. You know a place has got to be good when they've mastered the layout of each room to suit pretty much anyone and everyone.

I'd never been before but everyone seemed to think this was a good venue for cheap drinks and relaxed atmosphere. That is exactly the perception i got out of it. You cannot miss that crazy purple sign above the door and once you enter the dimly lit venue has not a lot going for it, but everyone inside is totally chilled giving the place a real laid-back feel. We arrived and they were sitting out back so i ordered a drink and headed out to the large beer garden. There's a large wooden communal table with small slum-couches scattered around. The venue is usually busy but never really feels 'packed out', such a great little place.

Why is the Old Bar so damn popular? Because it's dingy, the staff are awesome and there is a feeling of being warped to simpler times when you are there. I have noticed that myself and others confuse The Old Bar and Bar Open, potentially because they are reasonably close to each other and have similar sounding names. Besides that, both have a chilled out atmosphere, graffiti art, toilet poetry and just all very reminiscent of a grunge bar in Seattle circa 1996. So much fun! Whether you are a North sider, a North West sider, Westie, Southerner, South Easter, a local or just visiting, you are bound to find some fresh jive at Old Bar.

There is absolutely no nonsense about the place - they show bands, they serve beer, that's it. Over the years the calibre of acts they put on here has fluctuated greatly. Nowadays it seems a fairly rock intensive, alt.country-type vibe about the joint and it really fits with the record-cover and band-poster decor of the place. You could spend a great deal of time, beer in hand, perusing the walls of this bar, just imagining the past bills they've put together - a veritable who's who of the local and touring rock scene. The best thing about Old Bar is the non-sceney nature of the surrounds and staff. Sure, it's a bit of a shithole, but the staff take pride in the fact that they're serving an important function in the community. Plus, the dude who owns the joint is in a kick-arse band of his own. This is a serious rock pub, in a serious rock city, and whatever else can be said about Old Bar is pretty much beside the point.

Officially, this place is the clubroom for the Williamstown Maritime Assosciation. But it's completely open to the public, and it's a warm and welcoming place. The tavern is located within the Seaworks precinct, where the Sea Sepherd ships are docked, and it can be a little daunting to find your way the first time. Basically, you take a left on Ann St from Nelson Pl and head toward the water. There's some parking along Ann St. Check out the creepy historic bluestone morgue and head through the adjacent gates into the industrial-looking port area. Follow the sign to the Pirates Tavern, take a left, and you'll see it. Inside, it's warm and cozy in a rough-and-tumble kind of way. The bar's to your left and the stage is straight ahead. They have live music on Friday and Saturday nights, and once a month on Sundays too. Usually music that appeals to an older crowd. The crowd here mostly IS on the older side, but children and families are welcome too. Zero dress code here -- if you're dressed elegantly, this is the wrong place for you. Drinks are reasonably priced and they have a wide range on offer. Service is genuinely friendly. Note that Pirates Tavern is only open on the weekends -- Friday night through Sunday night. If you come on a Sunday afternoon, you can also tour the Sea Shepherd ship docked outside for free. Win!
