Dr. Appelle has earned my family's trust and thanks. Let me explain. I first visited Dr. Appelle in 1995, more than 20 years ago. He is honest, up to date with the latest dental technology, and explains issues and problems with teeth clearly. I like that he provides many options for treatment and explains the pros and cons of each procedure. Sometimes over the past 20 years I have been fortunate to have two dental insurance plans. Dr. Appelle's office expertly coordinated those insurance plans, answered our questions, and kept us informed of the status of insurance payments. I last visited Dr. Appelle about 1 year ago. I now live outside of Washington, DC but needed a 2nd opinion. I knew Dr. Appelle was the "go to" person. I recall I had an appointment on Veteran's Day in 2015. There is a military citation in the patient hallway. That citation commended Dr. Appelle for his service in the US Army during Vietnam, where he performed dental surgery, restoration, cleanings, and filled cavities. Some of these tasks were performed very close to the front lines. Dr. Appelle is honest, straightforward, well connected within the dental industry, personable, and flexible. Dr. Appelle is the first dentist I have been to in years that's made me feel 100% comfortable with my procedure. Context: I am hugely scared of the dentist. I avoided it for so long that I needed to get a root canal. Cue the anxiety! I was so nervous that I almost just got the tooth extracted, but Dr. Appelle assured me it wouldn't be as bad as I thought. Turns out, it wasn't bad at all. Whatever he did with the novocaine he did it so well that I felt nothing. I'm a crier, usually, and I barely flinched. They put on lovely music and helped me relax beforehand. On top of this, I need to have my dental work done in a very short period of time due to my insurance switch. Dr. Appelle was more than accommodating and has taken the time to fit me into his busy schedule to get my work done. If you're a nervous patient, I highly recommend him and his team! My first visit was the best dental visit I've had. This office has good vibes. Most importantly Dr. Appelle was very knowledgeable and explained everything thoroughly. He is very informative and always more then willing to answer any questions or concerns. I am truly impressed. This office is fast and efficient. I was able to address my previous concerns and felt comfortable. Savannah is awesome! Very professional explained what I was about to have done. She was super upbeat, positive and funny. If you have endless money and endless time - to fill out paperwork with 4 + pages of payment information (so he always has a payment backup) - and even more time to sit in the chair for 10 hours to get one crown... then go to Gerald. Also, the crown that took him 10 hours to stick on my tooth fell out and the root's infected. read more

I walked in to find a huge beautiful modern office a waiting room full of updated magazines and a flat screen tv with music. The receptionist and dental assistant were very professional and made me feel welcome. The hygienist cleaned my teeth better then i had in a long time. I had a small filling that i needed to come back for, i was able to get an appointment the same week. Dr. Appelle gave me an unbelievably painless shot. I was done in under an hour. Super job, and pain free and very comfortable. they work with my insurance so i was only billed my co pay. I scheduled my cleaning in 6 months. highly recommended. read more

I had the most pleasant experience with Dr. Appelle's office, both today during my appointment, and beforehand, coordinating with the lovely receptionist, Lucy. When I first made an appointment on ZocDoc, I had not updated my insurance. She touched base with me and we got it straightened out. Then I had to change my appointment several times, which she was very accommodating about. Lucy is very sweet and friendly and certainly made the process as easy as it possibly could be. Neli did an exceptional job cleaning my teeth and was very honest/helpful about flossing techniques, as well as which toothbrush/toothpaste is best to purchase. I saw Dr. Appelle after my cleaning, and he looked at my x-rays, told me my teeth looked great, and sent me on my way. I really appreciated the fact that this office is not cosmetic--they didn't tell me all the things wrong with the appearance of my teeth as other dentists have in the city. Dr. Appelle has been nothing but kind, patient, and professional with me for the many years that I have been going to him. I have also recommended at least 6 people to him and they all still use him as their regular dentist. Kind, courteous and always helpful. I've never had to wait long but as other reviewers have pointed out this is not a fast food chain, it's personalized care and if something comes up with a patient before you on that day your appointment might run late. If YOU were in the chair and something came up would you want Dr. Appelle to say "Sorry, too bad so sad, gotta run!" Nelli (hygienist) is very skilled at cleaning your teeth and always presents herself with a smile. All in all I am very pleased with Dr. Appelle and the entire staff and will continue to put my dental care in their more than capable hands :) read more

Receptionists were not the most pleasant/helpful. And they tried to charge me for the procedure time and not the service. I am not sure if that is an industry standard or not. I also do not recommend this dentist for Wisdom teeth extractions. It was a long process and you are only provided with novocaine. For Nitrous you will need to pay an additional fee. (depending on your insurance coverage of course.) Just not an overall pleasant experience for me. However, the wait time was not bad at all. And, the nurse played music during the procedure to calm my nerves which I was appreciative of (especially considering that I did not find that the nitrous was working for me. read more

I do NOT recommend Dr. Appelle for your dental needs. They consistently keep me waiting forever before they see me. I had to come in twice after a procedure for him to "fix" it because I was in pain. He also tried to charge me for services that, when I got a second opinion, turns out I did not need. I'm not going back, I would take your business elsewhere. read more

Since I moved to the United States I didn't have a dentist of my own so I went to Dr. Appelle on the recommendation of a friend. I have to say that I am EXTREMELY pleased with the cleaning I had. Very poorly organized office. I've been there several times, and each and every one has been a disaster (I would have not gone back, but I had to get a procedure done, and it didn't make sense to switch until it was all finished). From running almost an hour behind (and not notifying me), to no one being there early enough for my appointment- and me and the staff having to sit outside on the floor of the hallway until someone finally arrived to let us in. The main receptionist is very unfriendly which does not help things either. I will never ever go back now that my tooth has been fixed. The only positive is the dentists themselves (Dr. Appelle and Dr. Ares) are very thorough and do a great job. read more

I have been a patient of Dr Apelle for the past 5 yrs. When I would go in for cleanings most times he wouldn't have time to see me. Nellie who is wonderful made a note of a tooth having an issue. This happened twice during regular cleanings. Recently the tooth broke off. He determined I needed a crown. He said, "you have the best paying insurance I have ever seen." After a comment like this, one would become suspicious. He put in a temp crown that was too high. When I went to have the permanent crown put it didn't fit properly. He went ahead & cemented it in despite it not being the right fit. He proceeded to drill down the porcelain crown to make it fit. Due to both crowns being incorrect trauma was caused to the tooth. I was in pain for the past 2 mos. I had been to see Appelle 3 times all of which lasted 1.5 or more hrs + 30 min of wait time. It takes so long because he doesn't know what he is doing. I sought out a second dentist who said the crown was incorrect on many levels & major trauma caused an infection. I just had an emergency root canal performed. I had been in pain ever since I saw Appelle 2 months ago. My insurance won't pay another $2,000 to replace the crown. read more

WORST DENTIST EVER. I should have researched him more. EVERY bad review on this site is identical to my experience. Honestly, I can get passed the horrid receptionist. But Dr. Appelle himself has caused me 6 months of pain that I was NOT in before I started treatment with him. He ACTUALLY said to me that he lives with back pain and that maybe I should live with my toothache. I went for a second opinion after Dr. Appelle could not get my crowns done properly (he wants to try to redo them for the THIRD time!!). Within two minutes, the new dentist (whose office technology is not antiquated) re-contoured the temporary crown that dr appelle made and i was instantly more comfortable. He also noted that the prep had caused trauma to my mouth and sent me to an endodontist who immediately said i needed a root canal. STAY AWAY! Dr. Appelle charged me $1800 in advance (before work started) and EXHAUSTED my dental insurance benefit so I am now looking at $6000 additional work. STAY FAR FAR AWAY! read more
