TL;DR/The Short Version: Breakfast here was satisfactory…read more Nothing wow but was totally ok. I had bacon and eggs. The Long Version: This review is exclusively for the complimentary breakfast we ate here as part of being guests at the attached hotel (The Best Western). So if you stay at the Best Western, included in your stay is breakfast at The Locks. It's not a buffet. You get to order an item from their menu from the "Best Western Breakfast" section. My husband and I both chose the 2 eggs breakfast, but they also had pancakes, a BLT or yogurt granola on the menu, but the day we went, they ran out of pancake batter and yogurt but said they could make French Toast. For the 2 eggs breakfast you get to choose how you want your eggs, and you get either bacon or sausages. You also get home fries and toast. After we left, I realized that the menu said you get coffee or tea and a glass of juice, but we were only offered coffee or tea as soon as we sat down and were never asked what juice we wanted. Although it's written in an unclear manner: "coffee or tea, 1 glass of juice." Which I interpret as coffee or tea and a glass of juice because if it was only one of the three options then it should be written "coffee, tea, or 1 glass of juice." Anyway, I got my eggs scrambled, and my husband got his over easy. We both got brown bread and I asked for mine dry (no butter). Our food did arrive as requested. We got 2 slices of bacon each. The bacon was nicely cooked, not too crispy, but not too soft/chewy. The home fries were a bit too browned for my liking but they were nicely seasoned. The meals came with a small serving of ketchup as well as a small slice of pineapple and a wedge of orange. The food was fine but nothing special in my opinion. I got a tea (Earl Grey, it was from Higgens and Burke) while my husband got a coffee. They brought my tea bag in a mug and a kettle of hot water with a cup on top. I was like why did they give me a second cup? But when I removed the cup, I realized they were using the cup as a lid because the kettle's lid must have broke, lol. Service was courteous and the food came out pretty quickly. The breakfast for hotel guests is from 7am-10am. We arrived at 7:15am and were pleased that there was only one other guest there (we hate crowds and like to dine as off-peak hours as we can, lol). By the time we left, 2 other guests had arrived. Apparently between 9am-10am is their busiest time. Considering there was a wedding the previous night at the hotel, we definitely wanted to beat the rush. They seem to have the reputation as a higher end restaurant, so I'm hoping their regular food is better. They have free parking on-site, shared with the hotel. Review #46 (2025)

Our reservation was at 5:30 (we were right on time) our food came at 7:10! Wow and when we asked about our food that's been an hour since we ordered all the waiteress was able to say "yes I realize that!" An apology would have been nice.. by the time the food came everyone was hangry at the table and we just devoured the food in 5 minutes.. we honestly couldn't enjoy the meal! But the food was good, the flatbread, salmon and chicken were delicious but the portions were one the small size.. we had the toffee pudding for dessert and it was a hit! My husband said maybe next time we order the food and get a room at the hotel nap and come down to eat when it's ready . The fastest thing that came to the table was the bill!

I just discovered The Butchery. What a revelation!…read more The shop is clean and attractive, with a very long display of many dozens of cuts of meat, many marinated. I bought a marinated flank steak that was amazing on the BBQ tonight. They also carry some great sauces, including my favourite Rufus and Teague Blazing Hot sauce. You can buy frozen pies from The Big Apple, which are the best pies around. They have a burger shack inside....sadly I was too early. Some other time. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the boss a really good man. This was a great discovery and I will happily drive the 25 km to get there. Very highly recommended.

Don't come here hungry! Wow!…read moreThis popped up when I plugged in 'butcher' near me. 15 min away. My first visit was a Sat. So busy! And for good reason. I was blown away by all the meat, the prepared goods. Burger counter. Some seating. Freezer choices. Some dried goods, bread. I got away with Chorizo, some lean ground beef and some beautiful olive oil. Is this place cheap? No! But, I pay for quality without batting an eye. Especially foodie stuff. Next round was a Tuesday aft. Ahhh. Better. I could see everything, not so packed. It was just after a long weekend so some things were sold out but I grabbed more lean beef, a chicken parm portion, a beef Jamaican patty and a stuffed potato. All were good! The chicken portion from the fresh cabinet was $11.50! More than my lb of ground beef! But it was a filling piece and fed me x 2. I love this place.

The four of us arrived a few minutes before our 12:30 reservation. We were instructed to make our way to a table upstairs. One elderly member of our group is unable to climb stairs. We politely declined and were told we would have to wait for a table on the main floor to open up. The stools we were offered to sit at were so tall I had to practically lift my mother up. Then we started to feel how uncomfortably cold it was. A table cleared up about a half hour later but the girl at the desk quickly sat a party who had just arrived. They had reserved that specific table we were told and we had to wait longer. So we were made to wait another hour. Meanwhile, staff appeared panicked and in over their heads. We waited two hours from the time we got there for our meal. By this time the restaurant had cleared. We were served cold waffles and pancakes to be washed down with undrinkable coffee. At no point did anyone come to check on how we were enjoying our food. What a disappointment. No dessert on the menu. Awful food. We would have left to go somewhere else but where could we go that wasn't already booked up? We paid the $130 and left. I've had nice meals there in the past but I see no reasons to support that place again. This was too embarrassing and maddening for a repeat experience.

New Year's Eve Dinner Review…read more If you're looking to test your patience on New Year's Eve, this restaurant delivers flawlessly. From the moment we arrived, it was clear the night was headed downhill. The greeter welcoming guests to this "special" evening had massive underarm sweat stains, which set the tone nicely. Inside, the dining room was so cramped it felt more like a waiting room than a celebratory restaurant. Service was abysmal. It took 95 minutes for our entrées to arrive -- an astonishing delay for a fixed New Year's Eve menu. When the food finally did show up, it wasn't worth the wait. The dishes were poorly executed and completely forgettable, making the premium pricing feel almost insulting. Attention to detail was clearly not a priority. One nearby table had red wine stains on the tablecloth, and instead of changing it, staff seated another party there before finally addressing it. Nothing says fine dining like dried wine stains and indifference. To their credit, the restaurant did attempt to remedy the situation -- after the damage was done. We were offered a gift card to return, which honestly felt absurd. After an evening like that, why would anyone willingly come back for round two? What should have been a festive New Year's Eve turned into a lesson in mismanagement and poor standards. This is not a restaurant we would ever recommend, especially for special occasions -- unless disappointment is part of the plan.

However, we had a special occasion to celebrate and we made the exception for this time. It looks much the same inside as it did way back when, except maybe more tables now. Prices are still high (certainly higher than at lunch. There are more servers now; ours was patient with us, explaining the menu and repeating things we missed. We finally made up our minds, and placed our orders, and bread was brought out. I started my meal with a glass of red French wine and a salad. Main course was beef ribs, so tender as to fall off the bone! And very tasty too. I am not a big fan of gravy, and there was lots of it! Also 4 sprigs of asparagus, which is not my favourite. All this was filling and o had no room for desert. This was lovely, but expensive. I don't need to hurry back, but would certainly do so.
