Even our small kids enjoyed looking at old relics including replicas of rooms, weapons from Native Americans and civil war. They especially liked going into the train caboose We went on a Sunday and the larger train car was not open though where there is supposed to be a nice model train. A nice collection of "old" real things. They also had a very small gift shop area in front where the kids each got a small toy.

The bands are not good and seating (only on the ground) is first come first serve. Security will not allow you to bring in your own water bottle and they do not exercise common sense. Our group of six enjoyed the visit to Belle Grove Plantation which is a well cared for property…read morelisted on the National Trust of historic buildings. The history of the Hite Family and its prominence in this community was well relayed by our enthusiastic tour docent who was a wealth of good information. She also gave a fair amount of discussion about the enslaved people who ran the day to day domestic activities in the home. Unfortunately there are few first hand records from that group so I suppose much of their history is conjecture. The gift shop has some nice crafts by local artisans and the surrounding fields are interesting as the site of civil war battles. Belle Grove is a nice place to examine several centuries of history that relate to this property and deserves a visit by those visiting the Shenandoah Valley.

The circa 1801 stone house has seen over two centuries of history pass by its front door and happen in its parlor. For centuries, the Ashby's Gap Turnpike (modern U.S. Route 50) has carried farmers taking their goods to market, slave coffles bearing their unfortunate victims for sale to the Deep South, Civil War armies, and modern travelers. At the time of the Civil War, Caleb and Mary Ann Rector owned the home that now bears their name. John Mosby officially formed his first company of the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry in the Rector's parlor on June 10, 1863, and Confederate cavalry commander J.E.B. Stuart called the home his headquarters during the Gettysburg Campaign. The house also served as a hospital for wounded Union cavalrymen in the winter of 1864.

There was karaoke inside this evening so we took advantage of the beautiful weather and ate outside with a gorgeous view of the vineyard and surrounded by the mountains. I ordered wings and the Seafood duo - Salmon and scallops. There was a wonderful delicate crust on both the salmon and the scallops, the flavors were spot on, the scallops melted in my mouth. The saffron rice and vegetables were a nice side and made the plate look nice. The wings are okay, not super crunchy but good. The buffalo sauce has a different flavor to it with a nice heat on the back end. The blue cheese dressing is almost gorgonzola in flavor. Strong but good. She ordered the Southern Salad. She sent it back. The salad as specified in the menu states that it is "tossed" in the dressing. She prefers the dressing on the side so they quickly replaced it for her and she was very happy, two thumbs up. If the salad is tossed in dressing it is to soggy to take home. The blue cheese dressing is strong and overpowered the wonderful salad before swapping it out. You get a buzzer to let you know when your food is ready so the appetizers are served at the same time as the main course. The only downfall I noted. A waiter does carry the food out so you are not carrying a large tray out. Yes, it's a winery but we had soda water. We don't drink.

My family and I wandered into this festival, thinking it was a farmers market or street fair. Boy,…read morewas I excited when I found out it was a beer festival. It took me a while though--I first ran into The Gypsy Catwalk mobile boutique, which was next to a homebrewers' association tent. So I'm talking to the super nice woman, thinking if I donate some money, I get some beer tastings. She had to explain to me that it was a whole festival. The brew part: you can walk around for free. There's food trucks and other vendors, which is great. If you want to taste, it is $25 for five pours (ten tickets) and a small glass. There's a VIP option as well, but I didn't look into that. The blues part: different blues bands playing in one section of the park, and people brought blankets/chairs. The website lists over 20 different breweries, but I didn't count while I was there. However, I did find some new favorite beers, such as Pale Fire's Smokin' Scottish and Troegs' DreamWeaver Wheat. Each brewery was offering two different beers, and each pour was two tickets each. Plus, the homebrewers' association was offering tastings, and you didn't have to use your tickets (but I did donate). I tried a seasonal one from them and loved it, and got a pretzel necklace. I enjoy the blues, and the band we heard (Hypnotic Willie, I believe) was great. I could've stayed there all day, and would love to make a day of it (or weekend) and return next year. Yes, it's not as big as something like Snallygaster, but it's also not as crowded and I had a fantastic time. If I lived nearby, I definitely be here yearly, and if you are planning to visit, or need a day trip, you might want to time it around Brew and Blues.
