This is a very special stop on anyone's Civil War journey. I learned a lot about the person, Stonewall Jackson, and it was cool to see where he headquartered in Virginia shortly before he was killed. Beautiful antiques too. I saw my first Cicada of the (7) year on the entry walk. read more

The house itself is quite interesting and the amount of original artifacts is impressive, in fact more original pieces than you'll see in any similar museum. The reason I'm giving this two stars is the rather shocking lack of historical knowledge from our tour guide who was gracious and certainly devoted a lot of time to showing us around. They suggested that we should honor people like Jackson and Robert E. Lee if for no other reason that they fought in the Mexican-American War and but for their valor and participation "we might all be speaking Spanish today" which, of course, despite it's racist overtones is a complete misrepresentation of that war. The gift shop is filled with Confederate memorabilia, or propaganda, if you like. Some of it rather tacky, but most appearing to be a serious attempt to venerate people like Jefferson Davis, Lee or Jackson. Considering that the Confederate battle flag is recognized as a hate symbol, having so much paraphernalia with that image is questionable at the very least. As I have mentioned, the artifacts and the house are impressive and I think it would be possible to display them without the deification of General Jackson as a constant theme. To anyone considering visiting this museum I would have to caution them to enjoy the house and it's contents and be prepared for a one-sided portrait of the man devoid of any real historical context and reckoning on the the fact that he went to war against the United States for, according to the Constitution of the Confederate States, the Virginia secession documents and the "Cornerstone Speech" by CSA Vice President Alexander Stephens was the perpetuation of slavery and white supremacy. read more

Great tour of a house once occupied by "Stonewall" Jackson, who lead the Confederate Army to many victories in the Shenandoah Campaign. Despite being over 150 years old, the house is still intact (with some minor additions), and is now a museum and landmark for Civil War history buffs. Unfortunately, no pictures allowed inside! When I visited, the house was maintained by a pair of volunteers who kept meticulous records regarding the artifacts that were on display, many of which were passed down from Jackson's family line. My favorites included Jackson's personal traveling desk (with ink blots still there), map desk, field chair, and bible (Jackson was famously religious). But the highlight were the stories. The funniest one was regarding a famous picture of him, where one of his buttons is clearly askew. Apparently prior to sitting down for this portrait, that button fell off, and Jackson sewed it on right there and then. But he didn't do a great job, so he was forever depicted with a button off-center. For $5 it's a quick, fun tour. I just wish they have more of those stories to tell! read more

Lovely tour guide but with a 4PM Sunday close and it was already 2:30-3:00, tour felt rushed to finish by 4. Wished we had an extra hour to go back through and examine contents closer. Biggest problem, no pictures allowed. read more

I grew up in Winchester and had never been here until today. Well worth the visit. The docent led tour was very informative and full of civil war history, yet still entertaining for those of us who are not Civil War buffs. Tours are led through two full floors of the home, and it is remarkable how much of the original furniture remains. Unique items include - the first house in Winchester with a floor grate used in the winter to allow fireplace heat to rise and warm the bedrooms, the prayer table and prayer book Stonewall Jackson carried with him to every battle. Of most note is one of the winning battle flags from the Civil War located on the top floor of the house. Brian was a great tour guide. The tour lasted about an hour. I recommend a visit! read more

Whether you are a civil war buff or not, it is really worth having an tour of Stonewall's home/headquarters. Brian was an awesome guide; really knows his history and has lots of entertaining stories and tidbits from this period in time!! (And the house contains the actual historical furniture). This tour was worth doing. I liked it more than others because many of the original pieces aren't behind glass, and because the tour guide was awesome. She has some southern leanings, but she'll tell you that straight up, which I respect. She also did a good job of explaining some of the effects of the civil war on the south. read more

We came in after I read reviews. Quite a great tour! The docent provides an extensive overview of the Jackson and the Moores (Mary Tyler Moore is a descendent!) who owned the house. I was very surprised by the number of original items in the house--from the desk and chair Jackson tried to resign his post, to the war-related items lost by Union soldier on the battlefield. I highly recommend this tour. read more
