We want our children to be bilingual and we're thrilled that both have entered a dual language english/Spanish program. We also love that fact that this is an IB school that focuses on 21st century skills. Last but not least, the school hired a COVID consultant and reorganized the entire school in order to be able to have children on premises and meet social distancing standards. Although they do have a remote option, this thankful parent is thrilled to drop the kids off at real school every morning.

We visited a number of schools and sought the the advice of countless friends and family before finally being introduced to Pine Street school. We attended an informational social which gave us the opportunity to meet faculty, parents, students, and learn more about the IB program and curriculum - we were blown away by the enthusiasm of the teachers, the global exposure the students had, and the close knit community we encountered there. But it was our children's response that really informed our decision to apply as they were eager to spend more time with everyone they met that evening and excited to learn more about the school. Fast forward to today and we couldn't be happier with the decision that we made. Pine Street School truly supports the whole child: the curriculum is rigorous and engaging, and we visibly see how they are preparing our children to go out and make a difference in the world. Students go on more field trips than any other school I've encountered - they really make sure that they have an opportunity to go out and experience the world. It is apparent that the thoughtful approach to learning supports the development of our children intellectually, emotionally, and socially and we couldn't be more pleased. And they continue to impress us and exceed our expectations, especially during this unprecedented time where our children need more love, support and consistency than ever; they are the only school that I know of that offers 4.5 hours of synchronous learning each day while school is physically closed due to social distancing! Incredible! They have managed to maintain the academic standards and preparation that we've become accustomed to during this challenging time: it doesn't get more committed than that. I could go on forever but will stop by thanking Pine for continuing to reaffirm why we made the best decision possible by enrolling both of our children. Thank you!

It's our family alma mater because my sisters went here and later, my nieces as well. Back in my day, the school was K-6 grades. Teachers & principals have come & gone, the school has been renovated & expanded, but it still has that neighborhood feel. There used to be a large schoolyard where we would run our silly little heads off during gym, recess & lunch, but is now the site of the building extension. I think they use the roof now for physical activities. Some old classmates that I have recently contacted are planning a get-together to reminisce about our days at PS130. I heard that Mr. Epstein is semi-retired and still works part-time as assistant principal! That's amazing! This review can't be complete without talking about food. I don't know how the food is these days (my son despises school food), but I thought school lunch then was pretty good. For a FOB Chinese kid exposed for the first time to hamburgers, pizza & fried chicken TV dinners? Remember your first time as a kid at McDonald's? It was like a gift of ambrosia from the heavens!

However, people who rent the basketball court there at night are B*i*t*c*hes: a bunch of 30 and 20 year olds who acted real tough (a few dudes acted like thugs) but call fouls on any sort of body contacts. I played through high school and college (division 2) on varsity team with real refs yet I have never got this many "foul calls" on defense. Then when I had the ball, a short player literally tackled my torso and knocked me to the floor but refused to call it a foul. Plus, they are surprisingly okey with playing on a rim that's at least two inches short; I knew this because I "accidentally" dunked on it. I guess the low rim fits their nonsensical and childish act on court. If you want to send your kids here, I highly recommend the school; if you want to find people playing basketball, this is not the place to go unless you want to deal with the bit*chy acts.

I had 3 kids @ QPS over 8 years from 2010-2018. It isn't perfect or for everyone, but it's…read morewonderful. PROS: 1. Small Ratio- The ratio was usually 6:1 That allows for a small safe environment where your children are understood & challenged. 2. Progressive But Rigorous- I went to QPS looking for an environment that knew how to motivate children to participate & own their educational journey. They do that well. I didn't feel like they sacrificed rigor while doing that. 3. Great Community- There are very caring & smart families here. Families mostly come from around Queens & a few from Manhattan & Brooklyn. Despite the challenge of not being a neighborhood school, the families worked hard to keep the children connected. 4. Caring & Smart Staff- The staff rarely moves on at QPS. They are a tight-knit group. The teachers are allowed to work & improve upon their craft. They are dedicated to the school's mission & the children. They very much felt like partners in my children's life long educational journey. 5. Open Dialogue- QPS encourages dialogue & fosters an environment that creates this responsibility on everyone in the community. I always felt comfortable addressing concerns with QPS staff & administration. I did not always get what I wanted, but I always felt heard. I also appreciate that my children were comfortable expressing their concerns with QPS staff, even my most shy child. 6. Extras- The school incorporates arts & includes a multidisciplinary approach where possible. There is art, Spanish, drama, movement, belief systems (a favorite curriculum), and a rotation of electives. My shy child would never have discovered what a good actor she was, if not for QPS' drama curriculum! 7. Consistent Results from 3 very different children- I have 3 very different kids that I sent to QPS & I received 2 common traits- 1. I have students who are very conscientious about their educational goals. They understand homework is their responsibility & learning is their job & privilege. As my kids have transitioned to other schools, this educational work ethic has served them well. 2. I also have students who are comfortable articulating their opinions & their logic behind their opinions. I think QPS' open dialogue, group work, town halls, & class presentations prepare children for this. CHALLENGES: 1. Space- QPS rents rooms on a 2nd floor of an art building at LIC. The staff works hard at security, but it is a shared building. There is no dedicated gym room, but they use facilities from LIC ballet- located on the same floor. There is no playground, but weather permitting they go to a local playground. Their location in LIC makes it so they can make quick and frequent field trips to Manhattan museums-without wasting the whole school day. 2. Progressive- There is probably more rigor & structure at QPS than other progressive schools. That was a plus for us, but may not be for others. 3. Extra-curriculars- With a small community there is limitation on things they can do because there are not enough children for sub-interests such as: Newspaper, debate, dance, music, band, robotics, & citywide competitions. 4. Middle school- There are too few kids at the middle school. For some kids, this is not a problem. I think socialization needs shifts in adolescence & this was the primary reason for moving 2 of my children out @ 6th $ 5th grade. My kids are thriving at their new schools, but they still desperately miss QPS and would switch back in a heartbeat. 5. Special needs- My youngest is dyslexic & we had to move her to a school that focuses on processing disorders. She was only @ QPS for K & 1st grade. While we struggled with understanding her needs, I felt the staff bent over backward trying to accommodate my child. Despite their best efforts, she was making very slow progress. There are, however, other families with kids with special needs & QPS works with them closely. 6. Too small- I like the small community & small school for my younger children and never had a problem with the small size. I did worry about this in middle school. It really depends on your child's social needs. This small community does forge special bonds. My children are still very close friends with their QPS friends and we will always be grateful for the closeness created in this small community. 7. Diversity- There is ethnic diversity at QPS but due to its cost & lack of scholarship funds, there is no significant socio-economic diversity. I did, however, find the families to be very low key about their financial backgrounds. The school does a good job of keeping excesses out of the school. I highly recommend QPS if you prioritize love of learning, a school that knows your child and meets them at their passions, social-emotional learning, a small teacher/student ratio, & having partners in your child's educational journey.

We have two children at this school now. One is 8, the other is 5…read more Great stuff about this school I wrote about previously is still true -- small number of students for the 5 teachers on hand means the kids get a ton of attention that is exactly tailored to their own stage/age/interests and helps them move along a lot faster on the topics they are good at, and move well on the topics where they have difficulty -- there is a great mix of ages and styles around, and the mixed ages actually work together on stuff. Kids learn and see the good examples of kids 1-2 years older and that really motivates them to advance. "I want to do that!" At the same time, no stigma if you are a little behind on something and working with some other age groups -- Very little homework. It means the school time is working. Our kids are advancing quickly and doing a ton -- but teachers don't have to push off all the hard work to the parents in the evenings. There is tons of productive time in school since "classroom management" doesn't chew up half the time. What attracted me here, as a cognitive science PhD from Stanford myself, was the stellar intellectual grounding for the school its founder (Columbia PhD and former faculty) and multiple veteran and PhD educators on staff.
