The students of Brooklyn Tech all had this initial thought, "I hate Tech". Whether it was because…read moreof the teachers, elevators, schedules, or staff, while you attended Brooklyn Tech, you found some reason to dislike like the school. You have teachers constantly pushing you to do your best. There is no excuse for late homework or late assignments. Administrators will not take your if, ands, or buts. Sometimes you will have class in the basement then, the next period, gym on the 8th floor. The elevators will be packed, you will have to climb 9 flights of stairs. With the mind set of a high school student, you sometimes might feel unfairly retreated or wronged by deans or Brooklyn Tech staff. Trust me, as time goes on, you will realize, it's nothing personal. The school will seem like a human oven in the summer and winter. All of these elements may make you think that Brooklyn Tech isn't the school for you, or that you wouldn't want your child attending this institution. However, from the viewpoint of a Brooklyn Tech alumni, this school has sculpted me to the person I am today. You have educators who want to do more than make a semi decent salary. Teachers who want to help you succeed. I have gained more than just education within the sciences and engineering, I have gained pure knowledge. Knowledge that will carry with me where ever I go. Knowledge that is engraved in me, which makes me a better person, which gives me that advantage in the real world. As for the student body, it is an experience that you will never be able to encounter for the rest of your life. Attending Brooklyn Tech, you learn more about culture by your peers, than any course you can take in a higher education class. Not everyone who attends Brooklyn Tech has the same Ivy League ambition. You will meet some of the most brilliant pranksters, some of the most innovative individuals, and some of the most creative students. You will meet real people. You will find your own group of friends who will better define who you are as a person. I have met so many great and amazing people through my time at Brooklyn Tech. With that note, I have also met some who I would wish never to see again. There will always be something negative to say about any high school you attend. Your life is what you make it. The decisions you make will either make that path easier or harder. Brooklyn Tech is definitely one of those decisions in your life where you might think you've taken on a challenge that is more than you can chew. Trust me, this experience is worth it. It may not be easy, it may not be pretty, but you will leave carrying the pride of being a Brooklyn Tech Alumni.

International Charter School of New York - ICS IS THE BEST SCHOOL

My (just turned) 7 year old daughter was previously enrolled in a school that had a ratio of 32:1…read moreand was dual language. She had been there since Pre K and completed the first grade there. Before we hit the mid-year mark I was told my daughter was way behind. While we loved our community of families and friends, we had built up through the years, I knew I had to do something besides tutoring that was now a staple in our lives just to catch up. We applied to ICS in the late winter and were thrilled when we got accepted in the Spring. I made the difficult to decision to have my daughter repeat the First grade at ICS to fully catch her up, and we have never looked back! While ICS does not have the physical space yet for wide open parent gatherings they go to extraordinary lengths to ensure that families have an opportunity get acquainted during the summer months even before the school year begins. The environment is very welcoming despite the challenges of having two buildings. But the true and most important gift has been the huge leaps in learning that I have witnessed in my daughter in the just under 8 weeks we have been attending ICS. My daughter has gone from being a reticent, non-engaged reader to enjoying reading immensely and becoming more and more confident about her growing skill set. Her class size is now 23:2. Similar with writing, my daughter comes home wanting to write before bed and showing off her coding skills and being able to sound out words. I can fully grasp the meaning of her sentences even when there are misspells. ICS is also a very culturally rich school and lives up to its name. You can walk through the hallways and hear several languages on any given day. But more to the point, my daughter is learning about other cultures and how other people live and where they came from. The "culture of respect" and care can be felt in the classroom too. The days start with "morning meeting" in which the students greet each other with an awareness of thinking about how the other person would like to be greeted - which is so important in my view! The atmosphere of acceptance and individual recognition starts the moment the children arrive where the students are greeted daily and consistently at the front door by the AP or another caring staff with a high five. My daughter sometimes has a hard time separating from me and this added thoughtful and effective intervention literally gets her through the door on many days. The rest of the day unfolds with rich curriculum from learning literary gems like learning about "personification "to the digestive system. Pretty big stuff for a first grader! With such great beginnings I feel like the possibilities are limitless for my child to truly thrive here at ICS and reach her highest potential. The staff are uniquely dedicated here and the level of commitment is very obvious. Every aspect of how a child is impacted in the learning environment has been thought through and applied. Arrival time is strictly enforced but also adds to then uniformity of the day giving every child the best chance at a productive day. The day is longer ending at 3:45 pm, but since there is no requirement of homework I have more family time with my daughter at night and way less stress. With the learning covered and the parent only reinforcing the day, I feel freer to focus on parenting. As a single, working parent that is huge! Lastly the neighborhood is a busy downtown Brooklyn Street, but there are plenty of trips and recreational time in the parks and the neighborhood grassy square. The afterschool programs are diverse and specialized. My daughter does gymnastics on one day and attends a basic more traditional after care on the other days. She is happy. We have found our match. We are hoping to give back to ICS with greater involvement as the years go on, to this special community we are now a part of!

This school has a high turnover rate with their teachers and principals. This school also lacks…read moreresources for students. For example, if your child is emotional and in need of a counselor they instead keep your child with "diversity instructor" until you come pick your child up. Students in different grades are located in a totally different building. The older kids do not have a school nurse in their building but the younger kids do. Students gave to bring water bottles to school with them because there aren't any water fountains. Students also don't have a yard to play in so they have to play in public either in metro tech or Fort Greene park. All teachers have been very nice but like I said previously, they don't last long here.

He gets healthy meals and plenty of playtime in one of three outdoor spaces, including the garden where they learn horticulture in the summer. Which is great because it means we don't have to take him to public playgrounds where he might be at greater exposure to COVID or just regular sicknesses. They have a very responsible approach to COVID protections limiting class size and contact. Have you ever seen an entire room of 2-3 year olds wear masks the whole day? I have because Trilok sends daily photo updates of classroom activities. It's also somehow a cheaper option than many other private schools. We know some other parents who have had their children there for years and it's all rave reviews. EDIT: I've read another bad review here that talked about their child being injured. I can't speak to that but I will mention that my child was bitten by another child (it happens) and I was immediately notified and provided with a full write up of the incident and also given an opportunity to meet with the teachers about it. It was a small bite, nothing to worry about. I was surprised they even mentioned it. But I was happy they had a protocol in place. Very professional.

We pulled our son out with 6 weeks left bc we felt unstable and disrespected. We tried our best to make this work and engage the administration. We endured months of lies and deflection while multiple very good teachers and assistants left due to an alleged hostile work environment. But when a 2 yr old child was found by their mother on the sidewalk alone at pick up time, the city shut the school down and we never went back. All throughout, we did not receive a single honest, straightforward communication from the founder, Sudha. While well intention as an educator, as a leader, she is next level dissociative and narcissistic. Unreal.
