I would assume that there are certain standards to adhere to in order to use that title. Now, I want to point out that I do not have unrealistic, super high expectations. I have been to the free clinic in Hollywood, where many homeless individuals go, and it's far nicer than this place. I was excited to finally get my medical insurance through Covered California. I got Anthem Blue Cross - whom I am currently on the phone, on hold with, in order to change my primary care physician (27min and counting). I first called Dr Coting's office a couple of days ago to make an appointment. The lady who answered was not very friendly. She told me they do walk-ins only. She said they open at 10am. At 10 they opened, but the girl told me that the doctor usually does not come in until around 11:30. I signed in and then went for a walk and some tea in the near by Echo Park. Really beautiful park by the way!! Wow I was impressed! I got back at 11:30 and they told me the doctor was not in yet. I picked the least filthy chair. I waited. I wondered who would paint graffiti on a trash can in a doctors office. Or maybe they found it outside on the street? Jerry Springer on the ancient TV seemed appropriate. I waited. I noticed that they still had 4th of July decorations up, I guess there is no point taking them down when it's almost that time again! At least its not super packed in here I thought. Eventually a nurse called me in. She took my weight and height. Then she directed me into a small room. I was taken aback by what I saw. In this tiny room was a filthy brown examination table with writing and scribbles all over it. I couldn't even believe it. (See pictures!). The nurse asked me some general questions. "When was your last menstrual period?" I said about two weeks ago. (Its May 12th) She said "So May 7th?" I said "Sure that's fine". She then asked me why I was there, I told her it was for my acne problems. She asked me a couple more times. And then she asked me how to spell acne. She struggled to take my blood pressure. Didn't seem very experienced. I was sent back to the waiting area. The doc eventually rolled in at about 12:10. He was friendly enough, but did not seem thrilled to be there. He didn't really look at my acne. He did check my throat though, with one of them wooden spatula thingies! And then he threw it on the floor next to the closed trash can!! I almost laughed. He didn't bother to pick it up of course. He also had some nasty stains on his white robe. He is referring me to a dermatologist, which may or may not be approved, I guess we'll see! Oh and also they do not take cards, only cash, another reason I'm not sure if it's a real business?? Anyways, point of the story, don't go here. Thant's all. ;)

I remember one time when I had a terrible sinus and throat infection which took on a life of its own and I was back to my old self within a few days thanks to this place. He also helped me manage an ongoing medical condition Ive had since college. The low cost and the fact that you can walk in makes it even better. I've never had to wait very long. The staff is great. His broad scope of expertise, humanity, tact, and sense of humor have made a lasting positive impact on my life. Like most of his other patients, I can say without hesitation that I consider him and Peggy to be a part of my extended family. I will never forget receiving an unprompted call from Dr. H late in the evening many years ago after they learned of a sudden health crisis that my parent suffered. Thankfully, my parent's crisis eventually resolved; but that brief check-in from Dr. H touched me deeply. I knew that I was not alone and that he genuinely cared. Unheard of in modern medicine, when you call their office after-hours and connect with the emergency line, the phone rings at Dr. H's house. They trust their patients not to abuse that access; but the small number of times that my family needed it, Peggy and Dr. H were on the other end of the line, providing useful information and reassurance, even at 4AM. My experience as a patient of Dr. H's played no small role in my own journey towards becoming a physician. I often find myself trying to recall one of his totally unique and pithy one-liner jokes when I need to break the ice with a new patient. Family practices like this one are virtually impossible to find these days. The world would be a much better place if everyone had a medical team like Dr. Horowitz and Peggy.

With covid and how things are run differently now, communication is KEY! Peggy sent me all the health forms that needed to be completed in a timely manner via email. She was wonderful at responding to my emails, and she made things so easy! They went out of their way to see me in person in a really short notice as my visit required necessary clearance for my nursing program. They only have certain days for appointments but she made an exception for me as my work schedule conflicted with their in-person office visits. Peggy also sent me my labs on a Saturday as I requested if she could send it to me as soon as they receive it.. they are closed on Saturdays and she did that for me (I am so grateful!). I also want to say that I drove from Monterey Park to Dr. Horowitz's office on a Friday during the time that there is so much traffic (traffic alone in this area if you already know is hideous) but I would do it again! I lived in SF and all of the Carbon Health locations there were incredibly attentive and helpful. Unfortunately, that care did not translate to this Echo Park location. Off the bat, the smoke alarm low battery warning is chirping constantly upon your arrival. Not an encouraging sign and clearly shows a lack of upkeep of the space. The receptionist checks me in quickly, while editing a video of herself on her phone. I get taken into my room fairly quickly, and make it clear that I'm there to test my ferritin levels because I am anemic and feeling consistent exhaustion, and to get a CBC. Both the nurse and the practitioner are aware that this is why I am there as we talk about my symptoms in detail. I wait FORTY minutes for the practitioner to see me, despite there being nobody in the waiting room when I check in. Finally, I step out and tell them I have another appt and need to leave ASAP. They finally acknowledge me, meet, and get the blood test finished within 5 minutes. I'm not sure if they forgot I was there or what, but I heard them all chatting and laughing the entire time I was in the room. I get my lab results quickly, within 24 hours, but realize that the lab they ordered does not include ferritin, which was the entire reason I booked the visit. $50 copay down the drain for them to not test the specific item I went for. This place is an absolute joke and I would not trust them with my medical care. Clearly all the 1 star reviews show I am not alone. I'm going to try out Tia down the street and hope they will be more responsible healthcare providers.

The woman can't wait to be done with your appointment and is racing for the door after mumbling at you for 2 minutes. In the handful of times I met her, I think I've totaled less than 15 minutes of speaking to her all together. She doesn't even bother asking questions about your diet, work out, habits, or routines to get a clear picture of your health. She will just go by the labs and your weight, tell you what's wrong with you, give you a 30 second solution and is out the door. If you have body / self esteem issues, she is not afraid to call you obese and will keep telling you to lose weight whether it's in the private room with you or out in the lobby in front of other people. She'll remind you every visit so you don't forget and belittle your progress. Great results cannot come from someone that barely wants to spend the time with you to help you figure out a good diet plan or suggest a dietician. She's easy to book at any time of day because she has no patients. It's always empty in the waiting room when I go. Oh and if you need something prescribed, she'll say you have to make a separate appointment for it. Save your money and time and just choose another doctor. Dr. Xia - please do yourself a favor and retire. You hate your job and it shows. As for the staff, I've had good interactions with them and commend them for putting up with Dr. Xia.

The front desk was so understanding which helped ease some of the anxiety we had. The medical team was so patient and took their time to really examine him and come up with the best plan. The guy was helping me made me take a pee test. There was a paper taped on the wall that said put urine sample here.... Like I'm gonna put my urine sample on a taped piece of paper on the wall. It was so weird.. As I was waiting I think he doused himself in cologne. The doctor came in and prescribed me nauseous medicine. Then he came back in the room in a cloud of cologne. My headache immediately started back again and major brain fog when he handed me my doctors note, his hand touched mine and I could smell the cologne on my hand. The whole drive home . Before I got into my car. I threw up by my car because this cologne was all over my clothes. He sprayed so much. I just thought it was super unprofessional, especially in this type of environment when people are sick I was so nauseous. Not the sweetest, stand offish she doesn't interact with patients. I'm sure the complaints about the receptionist are about her. Not the real receptionist. Anyways my mom saw his son when he started his career. He seems smart. Im not sure its been awhile. I do know from experience Dr Yen senior is fantastic. The office is old n run down. I made this appointment three weeks ago because the doctor was booked and was told that the TB test is not covered for adults. It costs $20. It all seemed sketchy at first. We were given an email address to submit medical documents, and everything was uploaded seamlessly. The receptionist was patient, friendly, and welcoming. Although we noticed the clinic serves many Armenian patients, we never once felt judged or treated differently. We first met with a student nurse practitioner who had a warm demeanor, asked thoughtful questions, and listened carefully while taking detailed notes. It felt thorough and unrushed. When Dr. Manuk Chulyan came in, it was immediately clear he had already reviewed my mom's history.
