The last surviving pub in the City. By that I mean a pub with a real pub atmosphere, not some pseudo pub catering to tourists. We were a party of six and I cannot remember the last time we had so much fun. The food was great, I had the calves liver and onions, done old style to perfection. They only serve Samuel Smith bottled beer, but that's because Samuel Smith owns this pub as it does other historic pubs, trying to preserve the historic chop houses. The beer is good, so no complaint there. The best thing about the place was the staff. Old school publican. A bit gruff, but warm hearted and really knowledgeable about the pub's past. Another member of the staff, a woman, was kind enough to take us upstairs and show us the apartments of Charles Dickens. They really knew the history and it made the experience far more enjoyable.
