The quintessential countryside English pub. You'll invariably find the lone gentleman at the bar, with his dog on a leash. You'll find a semi-raucous table with eight or more sitting at a table telling stories, laughing up a storm.
The food is reasonably priced, the beer selection is nice. For a small town pub, they have a number of daily specials, most of them quite delicious. Over the course of a week, we had an amazing backed/stuffed aubergine, some avocado/stilton foaccacia, and a few other specials.
Book ahead. On the weekend this place fills up. During the week, they need lead time to accommodate having adequate staffing for folks. Indeed - we were there for a Wednesday afternoon lunch, and saw folks getting turned away (or told to wait 20+ minutes for a table) not due to space constraints, but rather due to not enough waitstaff for unexpected guests.
They have the typical fire roaring in the fireplace, dark nooks and crannies, and this so quickly became a family favourite, we ate here multiple times during our short respite in the region.
Would go back without a second thought. Highly recommended! read more
