We made a very difficult decision this morning to have one of our cats euthanized. The veterinarian and assistant arrived this late afternoon at our home, and with care, helped our cat pass on! It was nice that our cat could pass on at home where my wife and I could hold on to our family member to the end! It was traumatic for us but necessary! My mother called around to several places in the valley for euthanizing our 13 year old shorthair. She says that they were all very cold and impersonal. Asking for his weight & giving prices without a second word. When she contacted Emily at Gentle Goodbyes it was immediately different. She sympathized with the fact that we had to make a very difficult decision. Their website helped my mom immensely on making sure this was the right time to help him pass. The site helped to explain the medical side of his orthopedic disease (he was still in great spirits but had lost control of his back legs). They explained the whole process to us, made sure we had plenty of room to sit with him, & even lit a candle in his memory. They gave us the option of getting hair clippings & my sister plans on getting a paw print. They also gave us a good 10 minutes alone with him before they took him away. It seems a little odd to review this type of business on Yelp. However, why not? They're deserving. It has been less than 48 hours that I had to use this service and I am in the middle of my grief.... And it's AWFUL! I'm not sure how I got from Friday to here. What better time to write a heartfelt review, right? Also, I'll take anything to occupy my time. I'm really going to do my best to keep this review about GG, and not Maxx (my dog). One of the toughest decisions of my life had to be made, because Maxx was not responding to treatment. He was done! No more needles. No more forcefeeding. No more pills. Okay. I get it. He spoke loud and clear. The obvious choice was euthanasia. (There, I said the word.) I had made an appointment with his regular vet. I struggled with loading him in my truck and hauling him to a cold table to do this. My best friend told me of a service that her husband mentioned. In the vein of being honest and trying to find levity here, I'll tell you she called it Happy Endings. She looked it up online and gave me the number. (By the way, I have AMAZING supportive friends!) While everyone was here on Thursday evening (Maxx has his own fan club), I excused myself and went upstairs to "make the call." I spoke with the nicest gentleman, Steve. Steve wasn't just interested in scheduling my appointment and getting me off the phone. He wanted to know what was going on with me, in my head and how I had come to this decision and, most importantly, was I resolute in it? When I looked at Maxx, I was resolute. When my heart spoke up, I was not resolute. However, Steve made me question it. That was a good thing. I went on their website and found the Quality of LIfe page. My best friend and I did the test. Maxx's score was about 192. We stopped at that point and I became very resolute, with a lot of pain, I might add. Steve had told me after I had read it, to call them back in the morning. So I did. By the way, nowhere in that call did Steve mention money. Though, I knew there would be a cost. It was then that I spoke with Margaret. 10:00 a.m. (My heart had a VERY difficult time letting my fingers push the buttons to dial the phone.) After a couple of phone calls and some extremely painful moments of watching my dog stumble around, we moved up the time. Margaret said that Dr. Huder (please forgive me if that is not correct. It's what I remember.) and Jen, the vet tech, would be here between 1:45 and 2:30. I saw a car pull up at 1:46. Of course, I burst into tears. Amanda, my hospice social worker (yes, really) friend, opened the door and took it from there. Dr. Huder and Jen were nothing less than amazing. Compassionate and caring. They knew how I was (and am right now) struggling. Dr. Huder had Jen set up everything where we wanted to be (in Maxx's back yard), while we did the paperwork. Dr. Huder explained everything that would happen and what Maxx would feel or not feel. When I was "ready," I took Maxx outside and we laid on the blanket. I held him and talked to him through it all. Dr. Huder and Jen took extremely good care of Maxx through the procedure. Maxx was so ready, he was gone before the full syringe had entered his body. Gentle Goodbyes left a candle, some flowers and a very sweet card. We know that our animals will not outlive us and should I ever end up faced with this decision again, you can be sure I will call on Gentle Goodbyes to do what they do well. Thank you! This is a tough review and it's taken a while before I was able to write it. While I wish no one ever had to use their services, that is not the way of a world where our cherished pets live lives so much shorter than ours. If you ever need to help your furry baby stop suffering, I cannot recommend Gentle Goodbyes enough. They will come to your home so you don't have to worry about an uncomfortable move or your pet spending their last moments in a strange place. My 14-year old GSD started having trouble in the morning and by the evening, she was having difficulty breathing. While they are not emergency vets, after hearing her symptoms, they told me she was dying. My heart already knew and I didn't want to prolong her pain. She laid in my lap, in the grass in our backyard, and 2 of the most caring, compassionate, phenomenal ladies quickly came and sat on the ground with us. They immediately gave her medication to calm her and after a few minutes, when we were as ready as we could be, helped her die a very peaceful death. They took a cast of her paw print and let my family take as much time as we needed before we could let her go. They took Millie and returned her ashes to me a few days later. I could tell they cared for Millie's comfort and they understood just what a heartbreaking situation we were in. They were the truly angels we needed in that moment. read more

I Thank Gentle Goodbyes from the bottom of my Heart. Making this decision is so difficult. I had 2 elderly litter mates, brother (Jack) and sister (Sophie). Their Mother was a stray who no one would claim. I kept her unknowing she was pregnant. A few weeks later she birthed 6 puppies. Unfortunately, she tore her uterus giving birth. She had to stay in the hospital for over a week. She did survive. But now I had the overwhelming task before me. These babies needed feedings every 2 hours. I was Blessed by working for a company (Costco) that granted me 6 wks unpaid time off. The mission to save these babies was on. Nursing every 2 hours and teaching them to go potty became overwhelming quite quickly. By day 3 and running on pretty much no sleep, I was becoming a bit confused with which one I'd feed or not. I then named each one, making a spread sheet. Seemed like all I was doing was washing bottles, mixing formula, and feedings. Life was a blur. One morning at 4 a.m. there was a knock at my door. It was my dear friend Tina. She basically barged in demanding I go to bed; she was taking over. At that point I was having crying breakdowns, praying they all live, was I doing this right? I embraced the opportunity get some muchly needed sleep. Slowly the feeds weren't needed as frequent. Little closed eyes began creep open, then it seemed in no time they opened completely. I'd just hold each one up stare into those unfocused eyes and lovingly encourage them. They grew in my hands, and before my eyes. I would haul them all to the vet for progress reports. They were thieving. Finally, she gave me instructions how to introduce them to food. Oh, these stumbling little balls of fur could finally eat food. What a mess they would make. As personalities emerged my heart just filled with joy. I told my husband we would be keeping 2 of them. Since there were 5 boys and 1 girl, I knew I'd be keeping the girl, Sophie. No problem choosing which boy, Jack had the sweetest personality, so he was to be my boy. Again, I was blessed with close friends taking 2 each. I knew my pups would be in great hands and would be loved dearly. It all was falling into place, I was overjoyed. Jack and Sophie both were the sweetest, kind, and gentle addition to our family. Soph would prance around so daintily, she was our little princess, not an aggressive bone in her body. Jack just such a gentleman, people just fell in love with him. They both rarely left my side. A couple years ago I'd gone thru some very aggressive chemo treatments. Neither left my side. As I would sleep on my side, they both laid beside me, all snuggled up. They now were my encouragers. Soph would lay along my upper back. She would lick my neck two or three times then fall asleep, feeling her breathing against my neck. I will always be beyond grateful for having this experience with my babies. So, a few days short of their 13th Birthday's the hardest decision had to be made. Soph had gone blind and deaf almost a yr ago. Her quality of live diminishing slowly. Jack just out of nowhere began to decline in health, until he no longer ate. At this time, we decided it was time for them both. We felt they'd came in together; they would cross Rainbow Bridge with each other. We chose "Gentle Goodbyes" and we were amazed how professional, kind, and gentle they were. Two vets came to our home, I sat on the couch as they place one on each side of me. Resting Jack and Sophies heads on my lap. Their heads touching, I was an absolute mess. They prepared them, gave me all the time I needed, I finally gave the nod. Each Vet at the same time let them go. OMG, Sophie licked my hand as she would my neck. It was beautiful, bittersweet, and comforting they crossed over together, just as they'd arrived. We will plant their ashes with a new planted tree. They will always be with us. Gentle Goodbyes offered many options, in which we're extremely GRATEFUL!!! We can Thank You enough! While I appreciate the service to allow my dog to pass away at her home, I feel like the overall experience wasn't that pleasant given the circumstances. First off, they were late to get to the house. While it gave my family more moments with our dog, the anticipation was intense. There were two girls that arrived. The doctor literally didn't make it 2-3 steps into my house when she said, and I qoute, "Where are we doing this?" Look, I know it's tough doing what they do and they weren't there to hang out and BBQ, but try to have a little compassion. It may be "just a dog" to some people but ours was a family member and was special to our househould. She could've warmed up to the family for a few moments. Upon the process, they hurt our dog and made her yelp. Our dog ran to her mom and laid in her arms for protection. After the euthanization they gave us just a few minutes with her alone in the back yard. What felt like just mere minutes afterwards, while my wife was holding our dog clearly having an emotionally tough time, she was asked to fetch her credit card. I understand this is a business and they were there to do a job and not hang out all night an drink tea and converse, however, it all felt very rushed and it shouldn't feel that way. Take a little pride in what you're doing and being understanding and more sensitive towards the grieving family. Oh, also, the wooden urn we received had our dogs name on it and not only was it crooked but it was off-center. Again, take some pride in your work, please. The good? Our dog got to pass away in the comfort of her yard. We will forever miss her. read more

Dr. Lara was fantastic. This is the 3rd time I have done this (once with her), and it really is best that the vet does the job quickly and gets out of the house. This prevents the awful "What Ifs." Should I have waited? Was it the right time? Can I hold him for a while? It really is best when they get the job done quickly and get out the door. It does decrease the grief a bit and all the doubts you may have. She was on time, came upstairs and I got to hold my cat on his favorite blanket. She gave me a minute and then I told her to proceed. She did, wrapped him up in his blanket, and whisked him out of my house. If she had not done that, I would have held him, cried, and experienced much more grief. Doing it this way, as soon as he was gone, I just felt I had ended his suffering. Two weeks later she brought me his ashes with a plaster footprint which was a nice touch. The idea behind this is lovely, and comforting, however, my real experience was not pleasant. First I want to state "maybe it was just the particular people that came out, and not the entire organization". To summarize the event, The two young ladies that came out were polite, but very business like and clinical, not too sympathetic or concerned with the grief. The gentle part of the Gentle Good-bye was very upsetting. The injection caused pain to the point of yelping. When asked about it, we received a "yeah, it burns sometimes". All other questions were answered in a tone the same as if you were asking a salesman about a vehicle. The dose seemed wrong, because the poor dog got sleepy but seemed agitated. At the end, the two petite women were barely able to transport the large dog, nearly dropping him. The worst part of a bad experience is, you can't go back and re-do it. I have lost many beloved pets and I can honestly say, this was the least kind and comfortable one. I would find a good Veterinary office, several in the area have nice rooms set up just for passing, ( I have used them before) and are a gentle way to say good bye. read more
