My cat, Vienna, was euthanized on 8/22/25. It was a terrible experience. How do you get over feeling like you failed your beloved at their most vulnerable moment?  While I have gone through an occasional difficult euthanasia due to physiology and disease state, this event was exponentially worse, because it was a people problem that could have been handled much differently.  The vet and tech could have asked me if I needed their help catching her, instead of cornering, then pouncing on her in a closet as she was trying to hide. If I had not been dealing with grief and thinking clearly, I would have had her contained in a carrier before they arrived. But I didn't know that the dog-mentality people sent would be so devoid of cat sensibilities, and that they would be in such an aggressive hurry. After sedating her, the tech tried four times to get the IV catheter placed, which was difficult to watch, and then, they didn't even ask me if I wanted to hold her, as the pentobarbital drug was injected and she took her last breath. Instead, if I had taken Vienna to my vet, The Cat Doctor, she would have been handled tenderly with care and respect. She would not have been fearful and stressed at her last moments. Plus, it would have cost a whopping $150.00 less.  This was my fourth, and final, time using so-called Gentle Goodbyes. My cat's goodbye was not gentle. Their treatment of her was unacceptable. We contacted Gentle Goodbyes to help our beloved cat Gus pass peacefully at home. Unfortunately, our experience did not reflect the compassion or professionalism one would hope for in such a sensitive and intimate service. On the day of the appointment, Dr. Laura and her vet tech seemed disorganized, rushed, and overall flustered. My husband and I both requested and offered to help hold Gus, as he's a larger cat. We were told we couldn't hold him, and instead I had to watch in absolute horror as the tech and vet tried to hold Gus down with a towel, using their leg to hold his face into the porch. The vet tried to inject, stabbed him, causing the needle to bend. She was going to inject him again until I told her the needle was bent. Then my cat had to wait with his face smashed into the porch while she changed needles. 3 attempts later, they finally injected my poor Gus. When it was done, Dr. Laura casually told us we could take him to the crematorium if we "wanted more time," as if his life--and our grief--were just an inconvenience. We trusted this company to provide a calm, compassionate goodbye for our sweet boy. Instead, Gus's final moments were filled with fear, pain, and confusion--because of their actions. I am absolutely sick knowing that his last experience was not one of peace, but of panic. read more

Stella had been suffering for awhile now and we noticed her getting slower and less active. She finally couldn't get up so we had to take action. We rescued her from a Doberman shelter and estimated her age to be about 12 years old. Her original owners gave her away because she was too big for their apartment, where she lived with 2 other dogs and a cat. As a result, she developed an aggression toward other animals. I have never been more disappointed in an experience in my life. . In all fairness, I never made it past the girl who answered the phone - but that's a HUGE problem, and I hope if the owners of this company read this, they do something about it. I have heard great things about Gentle Goodbye's services and their vet, so when it came time for me to have to put my dog down, they were my first call. My dog is incredibly sick. He has cancer and it has moved much faster than we even thought it would. For context, I lost my husband to cancer, my boyfriend now has cancer and my other dog also has cancer. So, yes - there's ALOT going on in my world, which is why I wanted to use this service for my one dog who isn't doing well because we NEEDED compassion. We NEEDED empathy. We NEEDED help. The first lady who I walked to there was nice enough. Not overly compassionate. I told her I just wasn't sure yet so I asked what to do when we were. She told me to call back and they would get somebody out as soon as they could, but added in that since my dog has a tumor in his spleen, it could just "explode" before then and he would "bleed out" but not to worry - that wouldn't be painful. I think I was mostly in shock by what she said - but I ignored it. I have never done this before, had no idea what to expect and remember, had referrals. A few days later (Sunday), we woke up and the dog was in bad shape. I was upset and crying. I did not want to call them because I knew that this time, I would have no choice but to make the appointment. You have to understand how hard this phone call was to make. I almost could not bear doing it because to me, it felt like scheduling his execution. This time, somebody named "Jamie" answered the phone. I was still crying and probably not super easy to understand but I noticed her irritation with me was almost instant. I said to her, very specifically, "I am calling to SEE if there is anybody available to come out today." There was NO expectation that there would be. When she initially said "ummmmmm", and the way she said it, I just knew there was going to be an issue. She went on to ask me if it was an "emergent" situation. I told her no and explained what was happening with him and I was still obviously crying. Not one word from her like "I'm so sorry", or "this is so hard", nothing except a huff in her voice and the statement: "well, we usually ask for 24 hours notice so I'll just have to see" , in this extremely snippity, irritated voice like we had somehow just inconvenienced her or that we were stupid not knowing we couldn't call to SEE if it could be done same day. She continued to speak to me like I was an idiot and that she was doing us a favor by even trying to get ahold of somebody, even after the other lady told me to call back and ask. I got tired of how she was speaking to me, we exchanged heated words and yes, I told her she was acting like a "b*tch" which just made her more rude, entitled and now a victim. She said her supervisor would call me back and it's Monday morning, and still no call. It was VERY apparent they did not care one bit about my dog and made him wait HOURS until I realized they weren't going to call me back. Only awful people do that. I tried calling back, was sent to voicemail (guessing they have caller ID) and somebody called me from a blocked number, rang once and hung up. Not sure if it was them but they didn't give enough time to answer and didn't leave a VM. I have seen other people leave negative reviews and the owners responses, which mostly put the blame back on the reviewers so I don't expect any kind of different response but when you do your training, your receptionists need to know that by the time somebody calls for their services, they're tired. Guilt ridden. Incredibly sad. And typically the phone call is not easy. Please, for God's sake, don't make it harder. And please, Jamie, find a job that doesn't require sympathy or empathy or any kind of human emotion. If your job is to simply schedule, maybe somebody else can do the talking. read more

They have professional sweet Vets that come to your house with an aide who is also very compassionate. They take time and keep the whole experience quiet and calm. It is very hard to lose 2 of my dogs within 3 months of each other and they were 12 YO Corgis. I did not have to take the dogs to their vet and then leave. I had the peace of my own home. This was a tough day for our family, for any family whose beloved pet is at the end of their life, but today it was our sweet dog, Indie. We had to make the tough decision to say goodbye to our beloved dog, Herk. From the first phone call to Gentle Goodbyes to them dropping off the ashes they have shown our family and Herk so much compassion, kindness, support and professionalism. The Vet and the tech took time to walk us through the whole process, asked us multiple times if we have questions or concerns. They showed Herk so much respect in his last few moments. In July, 2017, we lost our little girl Jack, Josie, to dementia and old age. She was over 18 and towards the end we spent 24/7 watching over her. Dementia in a dog can be like caring for an elderly person, but we did it willingly. Finally we decided that her quality of life was no long worth her and our struggles, so we called Gentle Goodbyes. We wanted to be with Josie when she went to the Rainbow Bridge. They would be able to come that day and asked if we were sure it was time to let her go. We knew it was. so we fed her, held her in the sun, and let her know she was loved. When the time came, Dr. Laura and her Tech were right on time. They explained what they were going to do and we took care of any paperwork. We held Josie as they shaved her leg for the stent and gave us all the time we wanted to give her some final hugs and kisses. Then they did the 2 shot procedure and Josie went peacefully. At the end, we thought we saw in her eyes a look that said, "It's OK, I know it's time. Thank you for so many years of love and care." Dr. Laura told us to take as much time as we wanted to grieve over her and they left us a candle they had lit, a lock of her fur and a flower bud. They wrapped her is a shroud and transported her to the crematorium. We glad we sent her away ar home. We would never leave our pet alone at the end. We would use this service again. read more

Tokens of someones perception of tenderness is artificial. We had hoped that the Vet would be experienced and know what they were administering and how to do it with confidence and not linger us with doubts. The young woman Vet was apprehensive and wound up injecting twice after bending the needle. We asked her to be quick, with our strong girl, but she wasn't. She also tactlessly asked what was wrong with our dog when we had said she had cancer. At the last minute she asked whether we wanted to go ahead. These were questions we found painful after our decision was already made. Her assistant did not help or hold our dog, neither one touched her or tried to calm here. Our family vet told us about Gentle Goodbyes. Our dog had an aggressive cancer, and his health went really quick. We had a series of really bad nights, which made our decision. I wasn't sure how quickly we could set an appointment, so I called. The girl who answered was very attentive, and was more concerned about me feelings then to actually set up an appointment. Once we talked, she was able to get an appointment for us that same night. Dr. Laura and her assistant Erica showed up on time. They we very professional, Dr. Laura asking me questions while Erica sat with Yogi and my family. They explained the process and got everything ready in a quick, but not "rushed" time frame. About 6 months earlier I was charged $350.00 to put down my beloved 45lb dog. So why the price gouging, Covid? They came to my home, outside euthanasia no issues! Asking for his weight & giving prices without a second word. When she contacted Emily at Gentle Goodbyes it was immediately different. She sympathized with the fact that we had to make a very difficult decision. Their website helped my mom immensely on making sure this was the right time to help him pass. The site helped to explain the medical side of his orthopedic disease (he was still in great spirits but had lost control of his back legs). They explained the whole process to us, made sure we had plenty of room to sit with him, & even lit a candle in his memory. They gave us the option of getting hair clippings & my sister plans on getting a paw print. They also gave us a good 10 minutes alone with him before they took him away.
