I'm just sharing my experience with Vitas as I wouldn't want other families to deal with this!! Everyone deserves respect. My father never ever in his life talked bad about anyone. matter of fact, he would give his shirt off his back to anyone that needed it. So with all this being said, please choose wisely when looking for home health care for your loved one!!

There were only 3 that had adequate training Most employees had no training at all. They consistently were inconsistent in the quality of care, my mother received. The week Thanksgiving, while I was at work, my mother ended up on the floor. She had fallen several times, so this was not a surprise. However, she was in a great deal of pain this time. I looked back at the camera and had a clear view of what happened. The inexperienced First Light Employee had used the gate belt to tug on my Mama for about 15 minutes straight, trying to get her up. It was after she was unsuccessful that she called me to report the fall. I immediately told her "do not try to get her up on your own. Call 911." At that time she called 911. My mother was in such pain that she never got out of bed again. I hope First Light has improved their training of their employees. I took off work to take care of my mother and eventually lost my job as a result. I told First Light that I did not need any workers that were inexperienced. I continued using their services while staying at home with Mama. I named the workers that I knew would be of help. They began sending those 3 workers. Then, on December 8th, they sent another worker with no experience. I called and fired them.

Parking is free and there are several restaurants in the area. The rooms are large and comfortable with cable tv and plenty of seating. The chairs fold into beds if you want to sleep over. My loved one had a private room and restroom with a shower. It's more peaceful than a hospital. There are fresh flowers and hummingbird feeders outside the windows. Watching birds compete with a squirrel for food was a welcome distraction. Unfortunately, the main gazebo was occupied by a smoker. But there are quiet places including a reflection room with a guitar you can borrow and outdoor seating throughout the space. A musician came by and sang to my loved one. Volunteers will occasionally relieve you if you don't want to leave your person alone. A church left a basket of snacks & beverages for the staff and visitors. There's a kitchen area with a full-size fridge, microwave and plastic utensils so you can bring or reheat meals. My loved one was regularly bathed and cared for. But it was difficult for me to grasp that patients aren't encouraged to drink water or do anything that will prolong life. The goal of hospice is to prioritize the patient's comfort and dignity and to support the family. The staff is accessible and caring with one exception. The first nurse I met was miffed when I asked about how often my loved one would be turned to prevent bedsores. But you have to advocate if they can't speak for themselves. Overall, I wish my loved one could have gone to BBH when there was still time to appreciate the surroundings. I recommend Big Bend and I hope this review makes your decision easier. Hugs!
