Maybe it's weird to say that my favorite store in town is a beer/wine store, but it's the truth! The vibe here is really relaxed and calm, the employees are all ICONIC and sweet, and the owner is so super friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. After almost three years of visiting, I am way overdue to give a review. I go in at least once a week to pick up a six pack of something or other, and I'm never disappointed with what I've picked out. came here a half hour before close pre thanksgiving night. wish I could've gotten the guys name who was working because he was so nice and helpful! I was getting a white and a red for a family thanksgiving... the white was supposed to be for guests and the red was really going to be for me... I got the black cottage sav blanc, but the guy recommended tete a tete, a California red blend he said he was taking to thanksgiving. I wish I would've just gotten two of those because it was a hit and everyone had a glass and really enjoyed it. The prices were super reasonably too. and apparently they have wine tastings on Friday. This is a great little wine shop, well curated, with a variety of more distinctive offerings. A wine buyer is available for consultation, and if you're looking for a particular item, they can try and search it for you, if not in stock - no guarantees they will find it available, but the extra service is certainly worthwhile. As an added bonus, there is a pizza shop in the same building - they put the pies together and you can take and bake them at home. It's a real treat & unique experience to put that offering in your home oven and have a hot fresh from the oven pizza with your wine. Parking can be a little bit tight at times but there is nearby street parking in the event the lot is full. Counter staff is friendly, helpful, & talkative - which adds to the unique experience you just won't get as readily at a bigger wine store. read more

GWS had an amazing assortment of wines from rich French blends to fresh Californian varietals. I just looked at mead and craft beer. Immediately upon entering the store yesterday I smelled pizza, heard James Taylor overhead, and saw one of my favorite beers- Weihenstephaner Vitus! They have a nice hard to find craft beer selection and also carry several of Columbus's own Brothers Drake delicious meads. I didn't spend much time browsing the other stuff but my brief experience was positive and showed me they have a unique selecton I will be sure to return to explore. read more

Founded by Ralph Gentile, this emporium stocked tight with well selected wines, local craft beer, and hobby equipment for home brewing has been around since 1954. Under son Roger's tutorage it grew into a strong local brand that serves the tastes and desires of Grandview's best amanti del vinos and self proclaimed bathtub Bacchuses. Today the store carries on under Roger's son in the space shared with Mama Minis Pizza on N. Star and King. Oh the places forgotten: I spent a year in the 5xNW area a long time ago and shopped Gentile's often. I loved it. It supplied me with new beers and a few wines for experiment at a time before I became a lovely lunatic for the fermented grape. But over the years the place slipped from my memory until I was reminded by Yelper Giovanna A. Thinking I need another bottle in my modest collection ( you should always keep a pair and a spare of every type of wine I say!) I stopped by my next trip to the neighborhood. They seem to more a proponent of spirits than just a simple store. They wait by the door to introduce their selection to clientele. Their webpage has a blog that talks about wine; very well written, the entries introduce interesting bottles amid strong imagistic stories with intriguing leads, crisp wording, and tactile emotion. A must read! They of course have wine tastings, the last featured a flight of Bordeaux wines for $35. Seems like a good way to get familiar with novel types. Their wine selection is their best attribute. These are not industrial wines but bottles of top quality and pedigree. Name a region and they have a sample of wines from there. Ditto for nation; France, Germany, Italy, South America. They have Mead from B. Drakes, and a shelf of Sake. There were too many beautiful bottles to choose from! I settled for a Mendoza vino, Alma Negra's M Blend, of which the label teases, refusing to reveal the contents of the blend. It brags of the mystery of the black mask--pure Argentina sexiness--and the seduction got me; we all have to quench our black souls after all. I haven't tried it yet, it's Moonstruck label sits on my rack, waiting. They also services weddings and other events. Homemade brew is not a hobby of mine but I bet they will guide and help you master the skills. Their craft brew selection is serviceble but falls short of being extensive. And it's curated with a better selection than other local bottle shops. Yes, there's beer and beer brewing supplies, but I go for the wine. Roger Gentile takes time to select great wines from around the world (New World, Old World, small & large producers) and doesn't charge you a fortune for them. $10? $20? $80? Whatever you're looking to spend, they have something good. Know nothing about wine? You could buy any bottle and get a good one (or ask the friendly, knowledgable staff). I like Gentiles because I can usually find a good bottle of wine at a reasonable price and my husband always finds a quirky 6-pack of beer. We can then order our Mama Mimi's take out pizza... half pepperoni, half veggie. We both leave Gentiles very happy. I must admit they don't have the largest selection of wine, but I have always been pleasantly surprised at their off-beat French wines. I'm not sure if this is a region they specialize in, but when I stumbled upon a few bottles from an obscure winery in the southwest of France, (which we actually went to last year), I was impressed. I'm mostly impressed with the service. For being a very reputable wine store, they sort of leave you alone to shop, but will gladly help you out when asked. I have idiosyncratic ways when it comes to shopping for wine: study my options first, ask questions later, so it drives me crazy when I go to a wine store and they just point me to whichever wines they think are 'en vogue'. I can't speak to the beer so much, but it looks like they have a lot in the back refrigerators. You can also buy all the supplies for making your own wine here. They also teach at Upper Arlington's Lifelong Learning program and have year round wine tastings in house. Bottom line: Gentiles is a totally laid back wine (and beer) shopping experience. Very helpful staff, selection is not what it was a few years ago but they can pretty much get what ever you want in the beer and wine department. They have a good stock of home brew/winemaking supplies. The smell of fresh backed pizza always welcomes you too. I am so glad I discovered Gentile's! This is a great wine and beer carryout that shares a space with Mamma Mimi's Take & Bake Pizzas (a winning combination, amirite?). Despite the smaller space, there's a ton of selection here and the shelves are stocked with everything from the low price end to the special occasion stuff (aka the bottles I'm afraid I'll break if I turn the corner too quickly). All of the wines are displayed nicely with labels and little bits of information about some, which can make the decision process a little easier. They also feature some crates and shelves of selected bottles of wine for the person who just wants a nice drink (or four) under $15. The beer selection is also top notch. I'm pretty sure this is the first (and one of the few) places I have found Magic Hat #9 in a 12-pack of cans and the craft offerings here are a bit more adventurous than the GIant Eagle down the street. If you're a home brewer, they also have everything you need to brew your own. I've never ventured into this area, but I'd for sure like to someday soon. I have seen sign up sheets where they offer wine tastings on occasion and would love to try that out someday. This shop is fantastic, has great selection and the service is exceptionally helpful and friendly. Plus, you can pick up a pizza on your way out. Helloooo I'm sold. read more

My visit to Gentile's started out a little rocky, but ended up being OK. I came in here with my Mom to purchase beer and wine for my brother's wedding rehearsal dinner. We had planned to go to another store, but were running short on time (as always) and in the neighborhood, so I suggested that we just to go Gentile's to get the beer and wine. To start, showing up here to spend $600 on beer and wine out of the blue is frowned upon because we were told, "Well, normally people do this ahead of time, but we will help you anyway today." Um, really? I almost walked out of the store because this was the first thing that they said to us. Then we almost walked out a second time when the clerk started telling us what we couldn't serve at the party. I get that the clerk meant well, but the suggestion that my mom, the person paying for the booze, couldn't get what she wanted didn't go over well. After the two rocky moments, we did end up with a nice selection of beer and wine and the staff even loaded the car up for us, which was really helpful. I don't think I'd come back here again to buy for a large party, but if I'm in the neighborhood and looking for a quick bottle of wine (and maybe some Mama Mimi's pizza), I'll probably be back. Otherwise, I'll just stick to shopping at another place that doesn't appear to be bothered by my business. read more

However, sometimes when just trying to get a 6-pack of beer, the hipster staff seem a little disinterested in running the register....and forget about a friendly smile. Gentile's is what a wine/beer seller should be. Smallish, non-chain, neighborhood joint, with its own parking lot. (The fact that the building is now a shared space with a Mama Mimi's take and bake pizzeria is an added bonus.) The payoff, though, is the extremely knowledgable staff who are more than willing to help you ensure whatever you slide across that decades-old, worn counter is exactly what you want. When I was a youngster, let's say 21 for the purposes of this review, I was schooled into pronouncing this place as "Jen till eeze." Now in middle age, I have been chided into pronouncing it "Jen tiles." I have no idea which was/is correct. What I do know if that this is a fantastic place to buy that housewarming bottle of wine, that case for a party, that champagne for the celebration, or even the exotic mix of mainstream and craft brews for the football party. They have even branched out to offer home brewing supplies and advice. I would rather drink cold Natural Light than experiment with hops, malt, barley, and coffee notes, but that's because I don't have the patience to wait for fermentation. In any case (pun intended), this is the type of mom and pop store that make capitalism rock. So buy here, buy often, and buy knowing that you are part of a great tradition. I went here once to buy some yeast and hops for a project I was planning on a Sunday when Winemaker's wasn't open. I was surprised that they didn't carry Wyeast and sad that they didn't have the hops I wanted, but the owner was totally helpful when it came to finding substitutes. The beer turned out great so I have no complaints there. I should mention though, that the owner also told me a five gallon carboy would be a fine choice for a five gallon batch and no blow off tubing would be necessary. It was my second batch, and first in a carboy so I thought "well, he should know, right?" Two days later I awoke to what sounded like a gunshot. My beer had exploded and I had to make an ad-hoc blow off system at 3 am. Later I learned that it is a terrible idea to do a five gallon batch in a five gallon carboy . . . that is why I go from 5 stars to 4. I liked this place overall though. It did make me realize that Whitelabs is ok yeast. I liked the owner. He took time to walk around the store with me and pick things out, and was pretty helpful. I would go back anyway. I like the idea of buying pizza and beermaking supplies at the same place. read more

If you live in the area, this is a nice place to stop by and talk with the staff about a wine that you would like. They have a decent, but not overly large selection and the staff is knowledgeable. They have plenty in the affordable price range. Their beer selection is good. I am not convinced that it is the best location for buying goods to make your own beer and wine however. The Mama Mimi's pizza is convenient but I haven't been overly happy with the large quantity of garlic the couple times I tried it. read more

A local business that has done Grandview proud... It's sort of tucked away and easy to forget since it is off the main drag but Gentile's is great and the owners are incredibly nice people. The take and bake pizza (2 for $10) is fantastic and a nice little one-stop-shop for those interested in last minute items for last minute parties. Gentiles is my local homebrew go to. They have an EXCEPTIONAL hop selection. The grain is a bit pricey (when compared to Nielhouse) but the fact that it is close makes it worth it. Not all of the people there are homebrewers so I would not go there expecting to get all of your questions answered. They do have the widest selection of hop variety I have seen in Columbus. They also have a large variety of yeast (whitelabs). The selection of grain is good and I know that they sell a lot of home brew supplies so you can expect the grain to be pretty fresh. I am not a wine drinker so I cannot speak to that, but they do have a pretty exceptional beer selection. I love the fact that I can get a bottle of mead, my ingredients to make my next batch of homebrew AND a pizza all in the same store. read more

I loved that this place had every thing I needed to start out with home brewing. The guys upfront were also very pleasant. They totally new I was a newb, though I did look kinda lost behind my "guide to home brewing" book as I walked up and down the asile trying to find everything. Thankfully the guy came over and helped me decide what kind of equipment to buy, giving me tips on which kind of product worked better and pros and cons. I do stop in for beer or wine from time to time but my main reason for visits is their home brew section. Prices are some of the best in town, selection of grains is damn decent, normally have what I need in specialties. Beer selection. If you go here looking for specialty beers then you best do it the day of release because I feel everyone comes here for the same reason. They do carry a nice rotating selection of the finer side of craft beer so if you do in for one and they are out you will still walk out with something delicious. Wine. I have only purchased wine here a handful of times as I don't drink it too often. I did find their selection although small but very diverse in what they carry. Most of the wine is rather expensive and the beer is also on the pricier side. Being a homebrewer, I wanted to try outside my normal trip to winemakers shop in Clintonville to stop by Gentiles. While Gentiles does have a large selection (and larger, in some areas, IE equipment, than winemshop), they are lacking where it counts. They have cheaper products, but don't carry the normal top brands (IE, wyeast, whole leaf hops). They were also out of the hops and yeast I wanted. The business seems more focused towards selling papa murphys take & bake pizzas, and bottles of wine, than towards the homebrewer market. That being said, I was able to get a decent supply list at a modest price. read more
