Look for this sign! Corner of King & North Star!

This is a great little wine shop, well curated, with a variety of more distinctive offerings. A wine buyer is available for consultation, and if you're looking for a particular item, they can try and search it for you, if not in stock - no guarantees they will find it available, but the extra service is certainly worthwhile. As an added bonus, there is a pizza shop in the same building - they put the pies together and you can take and bake them at home. It's a real treat & unique experience to put that offering in your home oven and have a hot fresh from the oven pizza with your wine. Parking can be a little bit tight at times but there is nearby street parking in the event the lot is full. Counter staff is friendly, helpful, & talkative - which adds to the unique experience you just won't get as readily at a bigger wine store.

I've frequented this classic Grandview spot for the past twenty plus years. A staple in the neighborhood. GWS had an amazing assortment of wines from rich French blends to fresh Californian varietals. Josh and team allows being their "A" game when it comes to assisting customer with the perfect selection. Their knowledge of wines is impressive. So don't hesitate to ask for their perspective. One of the best craft beer selections in the area. Mama Mimi's fresh pizzas and salads is also housed in the front portion of the business. Give them a try- you won't regret it! I just looked at mead and craft beer. Immediately upon entering the store yesterday I smelled pizza, heard James Taylor overhead, and saw one of my favorite beers- Weihenstephaner Vitus! They have a nice hard to find craft beer selection and also carry several of Columbus's own Brothers Drake delicious meads. I didn't spend much time browsing the other stuff but my brief experience was positive and showed me they have a unique selecton I will be sure to return to explore.

Founded by Ralph Gentile, this emporium stocked tight with well selected wines, local craft beer, and hobby equipment for home brewing has been around since 1954. Under son Roger's tutorage it grew into a strong local brand that serves the tastes and desires of Grandview's best amanti del vinos and self proclaimed bathtub Bacchuses. Today the store carries on under Roger's son in the space shared with Mama Minis Pizza on N. Star and King. Oh the places forgotten: I spent a year in the 5xNW area a long time ago and shopped Gentile's often. I loved it. It supplied me with new beers and a few wines for experiment at a time before I became a lovely lunatic for the fermented grape. But over the years the place slipped from my memory until I was reminded by Yelper Giovanna A. Thinking I need another bottle in my modest collection ( you should always keep a pair and a spare of every type of wine I say!) I stopped by my next trip to the neighborhood. They seem to more a proponent of spirits than just a simple store. They wait by the door to introduce their selection to clientele. Their webpage has a blog that talks about wine; very well written, the entries introduce interesting bottles amid strong imagistic stories with intriguing leads, crisp wording, and tactile emotion. A must read! They of course have wine tastings, the last featured a flight of Bordeaux wines for $35. Seems like a good way to get familiar with novel types. Their wine selection is their best attribute. These are not industrial wines but bottles of top quality and pedigree. Name a region and they have a sample of wines from there. Ditto for nation; France, Germany, Italy, South America. They have Mead from B. Drakes, and a shelf of Sake. There were too many beautiful bottles to choose from! I settled for a Mendoza vino, Alma Negra's M Blend, of which the label teases, refusing to reveal the contents of the blend. It brags of the mystery of the black mask--pure Argentina sexiness--and the seduction got me; we all have to quench our black souls after all. I haven't tried it yet, it's Moonstruck label sits on my rack, waiting. They also services weddings and other events. Homemade brew is not a hobby of mine but I bet they will guide and help you master the skills. Their craft brew selection is serviceble but falls short of being extensive. I think wine is their main strength and passion.

Hands down, best wine selection in the city! This isn't like Kroger or Giant Eagle with tons of options but mostly mediocre quality. And it's curated with a better selection than other local bottle shops. Yes, there's beer and beer brewing supplies, but I go for the wine. Roger Gentile takes time to select great wines from around the world (New World, Old World, small & large producers) and doesn't charge you a fortune for them. $10? $20? $80? Whatever you're looking to spend, they have something good. Know nothing about wine? You could buy any bottle and get a good one (or ask the friendly, knowledgable staff). And if you're a budding sommelier, this is heaven. Best bottles of wine I've ever had!

We only wanted a couple drinks - and as the crowd was coming and going we didn't want to take up too much space. When I went up to order - they asked if I wanted a plastic cup to go! You can get a beer and peruse the market. Not our end-game this time, as I was planning to build a six-pack. Both ladies working were flying back and forth, taking care of people coming up to the bar, sitting at the bar, and every person that walked up to the register (some people were buying drinks to go, some in cups to walk, and a few people grabbed some of the limited seating present). They have a pretty decent selection of wines and beers available for purchase - some beers on shelves, and a decent selection in a cooler. I had narrowed down to a few choices, and I asked for suggestions and the bartender hopped over and lead the way, and talked about several beers with me (after the usual "what kind of beer do you like? question... which for me is, "yes, please."). She gave me excellent suggestions, and I moved from a 4-pack (you get a discount) to a (more discounts!) 6-pack. They have a GOOD selection for the North Market. It's not the best in the world, and it may not beat a place near where you live, but if you're in the North Market, and you want a good beer and good vibes in a little corner? But after the experience I had today with a person whom I believe to be a manager, that was all soured. I felt accused and accosted personally, but more concerning was that I felt as if this manager was looking for a reason to make other staff members look bad for wanting to help a customer find what they were seeking. I'm a whiskey fan and it's widely known amongst the whiskey community that certain products that aren't available elsewhere are easier to find in the state of Ohio. Naturally I wanted to visit a few shops to see what I could find, and in a tip from a friendly bartender, I visited a store in Lima that shared some info about upcoming allocation release dates and suggested I check in Columbus because they might be releasing them sooner, and that's how I ended up here. We were greeted and welcomed in, and after perusing the shelf I asked for the bottle I hoped to find. A staff member shared that they did not have any currently available, but suggested I check back today (6/21) because it was expected and should be out in the morning after opening. I came in around 10:30am and saw this manager on the phone, having what appeared to be a fairly heated conversation, which abruptly ended when an apparent regular came in to shop. She chatted with him and the asked if I needed help so I asked for the bottle I hoped to find and watched as her demeanor rapidly changed. She snapped back with a short "no. We don't have any." To which I replied "Oh ok. Thank you. I was here yesterday and I as told it may be released today, so I thought I'd check since I can't get it at home." And then I proceeded to walk toward the door. Before I could walk out she quickly said "Sir. Who told you about it?" I said "excuse me?" "Which employee told you about it? They're not supposed to and I need to know for training purposes." The words were believable but the tone of voice said everything I needed to know. I told her I didn't remember, but instead of accepting my answer she continued to ask, and I continued to say I didn't remember. She went on to ask me to identify them by their hair, and eventually by race and I still said I didn't remember, at which point she stopped and let me leave. The whole experience was very uncomfortable and unnecessary. I understand why they want this to remain internal, but no harm came from the employee trying to help me as a customer, and questioning a customer like that did not feel right at all, and as a result I felt I needed to share the experience.

Good, mission accomplished, keep reading... I enjoy sipping on a boozy beverage from time to time and maybe you do too. One of my favorite places to search for new finds is Palmer's, a long time (since 1976) Clintonville favorite. I like this place. It's an adult beverage micro-emporium that markets an interesting mix of beer and wine for the imbibing community. They offer many of the usual standards along with an ever-changing, eclectic mix that's sure to keep most anyone interested. Get to know Emily, the owner / manager / buyer as she's really knowledgeable about their product. She's always helpful and she doesn't have that snobby pretentiousness that you sometimes find in other beer and wine stores. Let's talk about the wine first. You'll find French, Spanish, Italian, German, Chilean, Argentine and American wines here. If you're looking for something that's unique ask Emily about their selection of Moldovan, Serbian or Georgian (the country, not the state) wines. These wines are hidden gems, IE quite good but hard to find. So, if you're looking to impress someone... We need to talk about the beer too. Of course, Palmer's has all the popular North American favorites, but I generally check them out for their interesting selection of microbrews and imports. Palmer's rotates a diverse range of brews from places like: Ireland, England, Scotland, Poland, Mexico, Iceland, Germany, India and yes, even Dayton Ohio, to name just a few. They never stock up heavily on their microbrews and imports so if you see it, you want it, you might want to buy it because it's probably not going to be there next time you visit. I highly recommend this place. 5 very solid stars. And Here's A Little Extra Pour In Your Glass: ** Palmer's is perfectly located. You'll find India Oak Bar and Grill where you can find some of the best subs in Cbus just across the street, Rodo's European restaurant right next door and two great pizza places just up Indianola, Dante's Pizza and Gatto's Pizza. Food and drink all in one convenient spot. What's not to like? ** Wine makes a great gift for birthdays, housewarming, family dinners, holidays, hostess gift or even just a simple appreciation gift. ** Palmer's will give you a 10% discount when you buy 6 or more bottles of wine.

Friendly service is another reason it's better. The prices aren't that bad especially for an independent store. Because it's a smaller place, it doesn't have as much on hand as big stores carry. It makes up for it by having more craft and local. The selection actually is pretty good when looking at how many harder to find brands are in stock. Prices are good. These are comparable with other local stores. It carries a lot of name brands. They also have harder to find varieties of these brands, like stuff that comes out seasonally. It often gets mentioned by many amateur and professional critics alike as the best beer store in Columbus. Prices and the friendly knowledgeable staff have much to do with it. The other reason is the selection they have for an independently owned local store.
