I used Genova Diagnostics for a test that requires frozen saliva samples to be shipped overnight to maintain specimen integrity. I followed the instructions and dropped my completed samples at a FedEx in the morning on 12/23, but the package wasn't picked up until 12/24 and didn't arrive until 12/27--five days later. Because of this, I was understandably concerned that the samples might no longer be valid. I contacted Genova on 12/27 to ask whether the samples passed their stability / integrity check and whether I would still be charged if the results weren't usable due to the shipping delay. They did not respond until 12/30, and said only to call them. I responded the same day, explaining that I was traveling and unable to call, and asked if they could please provide the information in writing. Since then, I have not received any further response or clarification. This has been frustrating because the test instructions emphasize the importance of overnight shipping and timely handling, yet when I tried to address a delay that was outside my control, the company provided minimal communication and no written follow-up. At a minimum, I expected timely confirmation about whether my sample was usable and whether I would be billed for an invalid test. Based on my experience, I would advise others to exercise caution when dealing with Genova, and I hope Genova improves both their communication and their process for handling time-sensitive specimen issues. read more

Absolutely the worst lab I have ever worked with, and I am a healthcare provider. They have terrible customer support, and their costs are astronomical without any justification. They will bill your insurance thousands of dollars for a test that cost a few hundred. Use Diagnostic Laboratories instead. They have reasonable prices and just as accurate results. read more

They were not transparent about the cost of a blood/urine panel. It's very strange. They should have been upfront. It makes me distrust the test results. They SHOULD have said: "This typically is NOT covered by insurance. But, the MOST you'll have to pay is $$$." THAT would have been truthful, accurate and transparent. They're damaging customer trust and their Company Name. Very foolish indeed. As for the test result, it was thorough and provided new insights on addressing my health issues. read more

The tests were carefully packaged and the instructions easy to understand. When I had questions their customer service was responsive and helpful. My results were thoroughly explained with notes and charts of various bodily functions. I was surprised at the low rating of this business because everything about my experience exceded my expectations. I would recommend this lab to doctors or patients. read more

I spent an entire day collecting my saliva samples, kept them frozen overnight, and took them to FedEx first thing in the morning. When I got there, they asked for my "number." I had no idea what they meant--I assumed the package had a prepaid shipping label. Turns out, it did not. It had a PREPRINTED EXPANDED BILLABLE STAMP, which is NOT the same as a prepaid sticker. FedEx informed me I'd have to pay $35 to ship it overnight from Washington state to Asheville, NC. I wasn't about to shell out $35 for a medical test that should have been prepaid, so I didn't send it. I called their so-called "customer service," and the representative was incredibly rude and condescending. She insisted it was a prepaid label and that FedEx should have accepted it. I explained that they did not accept it--therefore, it was not a prepaid label. She had no helpful response. Terrible experience. If you need to send a medical test, double-check the shipping details, because this company clearly doesn't care. read more

The shipping label on my SIBO test was not readable, so FedEx had to return the kit. Then Genova did not ask for a physical address, (my mailing address is a PO Box) so FedEx stored my kit for a month. Genova would do nothing to help expedite delivery. Meanwhile I'm dealing with excessive diarrhea and nutrient loss. My doc ordered a new kit which arrived in another week, but before the original. Genova did not tell me that I had to abstain from certain meds a week before I could take the test, so I lost another week. Two weeks later, The test is complete, but Genova will not tell me the results. Instead I have to contact my gastroenterologist. His closet opening is 3 weeks. It has now been 2 mos since my kit was ordered, and I still don't know the results. read more

Tried to charge me an extra $600 but only got an extra $101! This was all very stressful told me I now owed $1000, and was in collections because my cards declined over 2 months prior ...was so very embarrassing just didn'tunderstand why!! Turns out none of that was my fault and they didn't even apologize for any of it. And they got an extra $101!!! Thieves!!! It's crazy but my Doctor had to contact Genova for me and they told her this... "The retail cost of that test is $1000.  That billing was sent to her insurance.  The entire amount was put towards your deductible. So insurance did not kick in".  My Doctor told me... " If you had paid the initial payment of $150 then you would have owed $150 more to pay the entire bill.  But your credit card was denied a few times so they sent you a letter late September.  They did not get a response from you. The billing person said you paid $400 yesterday so your account should have zero balance.  In the end you ended up paying $400 rather than the $299 if there was no credit card issue initially." I pay all my bills on line so I just didn't see the collection letter.. But 2 months later they call and tell me I owe $1000 because my card didn't go through 2 months ago. I asked to speak to manager, so Susan takes off $600, card didn't go through again when i tried to pay so she asked me to get another credit card but that didn't work either...was trying to figure out how I could pay these people. Bring cash? Write check? I didn't understand why wasn't working but had to call back following day. Anyway... Next day after my other bank cards was declined again and again I asked them about zip. They said they didn't need zip but turns out there system automatically put in zip and the system was putting in 85209 and not my zip code on my driver's license 85201 that was linked to my credit card and second mistake they made was that they waited 2 months to call me to tell me payment didn't go through! None of this was my fault but Susan says they don't have staff to call for payments yet they were calling me 2 months later. Hmmm scam! read more

Genova overcharged me for testing. I wouldn't have known, had I not pulled up my account and noticed a credit in the billing section. When I called to inquire about this, customer service, let me know there was an overpayment and that I was doing refund. I said I would like to, have that credited back to my payment card. The customer service representative told me it would take 60 business days to see that credit. Isn't that fraudulent? Why was I overcharged in the first place? Literally no no business takes 60 business days to refund you. read more

I am super aggravated that I didn't read up on this company before I ordered a $400 useless test. I thought I had used them in the past but I mixed them up with a competent company (TrioSmart). I thought I was ordering a Methylation Panel which is what they tout on their website. Instead, I ordered a Methylation Genomics test that is basically gibberish. The customer support is non-existent. Both the live chat and the toll-free number employ rude condescending a-holes as "customer service" representatives. Did the entire urine and blood test as the directions said and they said it didn't work! I asked for a refund because I didn't want to do a test again but they refused so I had to retake it. I saved the voicemail they left me with this statement. Update: after all the confusion, they still charged me initial $300 (was told that was max out of pocket by Dr) and then got a bill for additional $800.. over $1,000 total! From now on, I will always look up reviews and lawsuits, which this company is dealing with. So many people are upset yet they don't try to fix it. Are they this desperate for money? It's so sad they are scamming patients dealing with major health issues. Michelle George was not helpful. She told me to send the info to my attorney rather than help me and make it right. They also said they are turning me into collections, which won't hurt me but no words. I am not giving in to a dishonest company. Horrible experience. Took forever. Customer service trying to tell me if I was my daughter's legal "chain of custody" or not (multiple times each time I called) was stupid, and rude. I had to call daily for weeks because the test was delayed and because she was a minor, they won't send any notification when it is finished, so I had to physically call every day. And then act as if I'm trying to steal a neighbor kid's data! And I have been a mom for over a quarter of a century...so I do understand about needing to know who they are speaking with. This was an insane waste of time...and now that I finally have the results...A TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY AS WELL!! She has severe allergic reactions that has resulted in ER visits to a number of foods we already know about. This scam of a test shows her completely clear to eat those foods. This company does much more accurate parasite testing than a regular lab and because of this has helped so many patients of mine that were misdiagnosed by regular western medicine and not helped until they got the results from Genova. One of their reps, Carrie P called me to straighten out one hiccup of testing because my patient was form NEw York and New Yorkhas different rules regarding these test and some of them are no allowed (secretory IGA), so she helped to streamline the requisition form to change the order for testing, and update my current contact info. she went above and beyond the call of duty. I would recommend that people pay upfront for the tests, and then get the bill to submit to insurance. IF they get Genova to Bill, then they do not get discounts on the tests, and if insurance does not pay then their regular bill would be much higher. So please pay the discounted fee upfront-it is much cheaper and easier. I still highly recommend Genova Diagnostics. read more

IF SOMEONE FILES A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST GENOVA, PLEASE INCLUDE ME! I ordered an allergy testing kit. Their listing was very misleading and the test results bogus. I've had allergy\sensitivity testing (blood drawn since it's more accurate) done at my Allergy Doctors office (an MD well known in the field). I wanted to save time and money for some up to date retesting, so I ordered testing done by Genova. Genova's blood drawn test results even showed me not be allergic\sensitivity to food items I've had anaphylaxis or hives from and allergic\sensitive to foods I have no problem with. When I contacted them (including a manager), they insisted the results were accurate and refused to refund me since they said they ran the tests results in their lab. Running erroneous tests does not qualify for payment in my world. AVOID THIS COMPANY! read more

My doctor wanted to order a test through this company. After reading the reviews I was hesitant, but he assured me he's never had issues with billing. So I ordered the test, paid the $189 up front. The results took weeks to come back, which was absurd. Then I get a letter from my insurance stating they denied the claim- because it was over $2000!! Another month later I get a bill for an additional $270, on top of what I already paid. Such a scam and waste of money. They clearly are just trying to get as much money as possible if that's what they are charging the insurance companies. No wonder the wouldn't accept the claim. My doctor wants to get another test in a few months to see if anything has changed, and I can for sure say that I will NOT be using Genova again. read more

The worst. I sent them a comprehensive test a month and week ago. Their results usually take 3 weeks. Called over my results when they were due ( 3 weeks later) and said the lab Dept messed up and they will contact people about this ( this was during thanksgiving break) coincidence? Don't think so. Another week later they have SOME results but they cannot process one vial due to their mess up nor will they release THOSE results. So now they have to send out ANOTHER vial in the next WEEK for re-testing that will take ANOTHER three weeks. This is after paying $400 out of my own pocket. You're playing with peoples lives and their livelihood as their families because some of us are hoping for answers on these tests in order to feel better by getting the proper care and nutriti by getting this test done. Disgusting. EDIT**** After experiencing a really late test alongside with a broken one ( this seems to be a typical issue with them that you can read over on yelp or google or any other place) , they've gone out of their way to make things right. I appreciate that and I also appreciate someone personally contacting me about it. I know patience is a virtue but for people already in a tight spot health wise, these tests can be life saving. ( sounds dramatic but it's not ) gut health is the most important thing within your body, everything stems from the gut. Don't go here, there are better diagnostic testing options. *Months for test results, no prices listed, no estimates confirmed when I asked instead reassured me that since a provider requested insurance would cover. *Half a year for online access. *Charges for tests that I did not request to have processed *No response to emails, extensive call times *Threatening to send a large bill to collections although billing claimed in writing it had already been adjusted. * Customer service in billing also told me that I refused to pay for something when in reality I had asked that the test not be processed before it was processed. Don't. Use. This Laboratory. 1) LOUSY instructions on specimen collection. You are set up to fail. Having worked in a pathology lab, I was shocked by the miserably poor excuse for instructions they sent along for collecting a 3 day stool specimen. A dozen different pieces of odd papers in random sizes with various printed statements, nothing in order, no clarity in how to set up the vials, no tips for getting a good sample, or "hat" for collection. RANDOM! A total set up for failure. As stated in other reviews, the collection system is ludicrous. If I had not worked in a lab I would have had no clue what I was doing. As it was, even with my professional skills, I still had to call Genova several times to figure it out - they have a weird approach. 2) BILLING IS DARN CLOSE TO FRAUDULENT: What medical company collects your credit card before they allow you to submit a specimen, and then charges you BEFORE they bill your insurance company??? Gah. I was shocked when I saw the charge on my credit card and called my insurance company to see if they had been billed by Genova. Nope. They hadn't. I had to file a dispute with my credit card company to avoid paying Genova before they billed my insurance. I talked to Genova's billing office and they could not explain why they charged my credit card before they billed my insurance company. Thankfully, they said they would reverse the $179 charge. The kicker? It takes 60 BUSINESS DAYS to reverse the charge. What? That's crazy. It took Genova no time to charge me the $179 and 60 business days to reverse the charge?? When I was first setting up my account (a byzantine process) I called them for help. They warned me that if I didn't pay them $179 up front the cost of the labwork could be in the neighborhood of $2000. How are they so messed up they don't bill insurance first and then collect the balance? Whatever situation you are in that you need Genova, you are likely not feeling too well. When I apologized for being so frustrated I burst into tears on the phone, the Genova rep said it happens all the time with their customers, "so don't worry about it." That's just awful. read more

This company scams patients. They charged my insurance and have made me paid as well. A cash patient pays $400 and that's it but with patients who have insurance, they double dip from both insurance and patients and I ended up paying $450 out of pocket. I have called the billing department to complain and they said this is the way they charge. I told my provider and they could not believe it. They penalized patients with insurance. Not happy with this company at all. My Dr ran some test with them that I did not realize he was going to run, and I never gave permission for it. The tests are approved through insurance, but this company is demanding I pay them 400 dollars before they will even run it through insurance. That doesn't make sense to me as my out of pocket pay is beyond paid with my insurance, and why can't they run it through insurance and worry about that first? Also I am being told that 400 dollars is what I pay if I pay out of pocket or with insurance. So they bill be the same amout no matter how it's processed. WHAT??? It sounds like they are thieves to me. Also if the extra expense is a requirement which I have never heard of anyone who demands an additional charge before filing with insurance that needs to be made clear with customers because I dont even have that much money considering my situation. ALSO They need to get my permission before they run test which they did not do because I gave nobody permission to be running these tests. I gave permission for other tests to be run but not these as they had already been run once before only 9 minths prion. I cant afford to be paying for duplicate tests, and considering I have been disabled since last year, I can't afford to be oaying for other peoples mismanagement. Then on top of that their employee was accusing me of interrupting him when he had stopped talking, so I asked a question and he turned around instead of just answering it and accused me of interupting him. I let him know he is a liar and hung up. I will not tolerate being treated like that by anyone. It seams to me more and more companies are failing to train their employees on proper customer service. AGAIN: Genova Diagnostics IS NOT a CLIA-accredited laboratory (neither of their labs is). The Licensing Section of their website only shows a copy of their CLIA Certificates of Compliance. They're as different from Certificates of Accreditation as $2 bills are from a $100 bills. See the photo I attached. I did an allergy test and they didn't test for shellfish or peanuts?? Those were the items I needed answers for, and didn't think I would have to confirm a basic allergy test would or wouldn't test for the two most common allergies. I paid the amount to have my blood drawn, then paid an additional "starting fee". Months later after going back and forth with insurance I'm finally being told only SOME of the allergy tests they ordered were within my insurance and the other ones have to be paid directly. Fraudulent company. Without knowing more about this company I ordered not 1 but 3 tests. Nowhere in the website its mentioned how much they charge for tests. They should mention what is the cash pay price of the test for all tests. When I mentioned this in my BBB complaint they outright lied that its mentioned on website. I have a conversation screenshot saying that they can give out the price only if I have a test kit registration number. And in the form that you fill that comes with the kit they mention cash price and option to choose between it and insurance. And nowhere its mentioned how much they charge the insurance. The cash pay was $350 and they charged my insurance $2500. Insurance paid some. And so they want me to pay the rest. If I had choosen the cash pay option I would have submitted the superbill to insurance and it would have covered all since I have reached deductible. So I am paying about $300 anyways even though deductible is met vs $0 with cashpay. All because this frauds dont mention the prices and their insurance milking policies anywhere. The customer service is not to service their customers but to just threaten and harass them I guess. I asked them to retract their insurance claim so I can cash pay. For 2 weeks they said it can be done and if I did it its faster. I call my insurance we do a 3 way call and they agree to retract it by themselves. 2 weeks after I call to check if its done and they say they dont have any records of that 3 way call but all the other calls I made to them. AND THEY SAY NOW THAT THERE IS NO WAY TO RETRACT THE CLAIM. after a month. Because they asked me how much insurance paid which is $2200 and so they cant retract because these fraudulent greedy ones want that and more from me on top of it. I have the documents and proof for all that they have done and been doing. I will be submitting a complaint with the state attorneys office. Hope no more people get scammed. read more

Patients beware, DO NOT do any testing with Genova. They quote $171 but bill you for $2499. I have been trying to resolve this issue for over six months. I've emailed, faxed and waited on hold for hours at a time, NOT once have I received a response. Even when my call was "next in line." This company is running a scheme and it's apparent by the reviews that I am not the only one dealing with billing issues and the inability to get someone on the phone. I have reported them to the Better Business Bureau and I encourage others to do the same. read more

Results: out of the blue $1300 bill and no test results. So. Unless you have a ton of $ and don't care about the difference in non disclosed prices... go for it. They refused to refund my $169 and denied my test results unless I paid the "balance." So. I pretty much just gave them $170 for nothing. No results. Just an extra $170 in their pockets. If I could leave a 0 star review I absolutely would. At first, the customer service team was incredibly patient, understanding, and answered all of my questions as I prepared for 3 of the diagnostic tests that my doctor ordered. I even wrote out a full schedule for how I was going to wean off of my medications/supplements, what times of day I would be collecting samples, etc.-and asked the team to review and confirm that I had everything right (these tests are EXTREMELY expensive and I didn't want ANY room for error). Fast forward to the Adrenocortex Stress Profile saliva kit test. My doctor ordered 6 vials to be tested throughout the day. I emailed customer service to let them know the first two vials I was only able to collect 1ml of saliva (which the instructions provided did NOT specify how much was needed-assumed it was the entire tube)-and asked the team if I should continue to collect the remainder of the samples or if I truly needed to fill the vial to the top. They said that this was not enough saliva for the cortisol awakening response (which, turns out, is FALSE, the 1ml line is all that is required for these 2 tubes)-and that I would need to retake the test. They sent me a replacement collection kit free of charge, and I retook the test and mailed it in. They only provided results for the 4 other vials of saliva, NOT including the cortisol awakening response first 2 samples. Instead of reaching out to my doctor or myself, turns out the lab tossed the samples. Their excuse? First, it was that I would need my doctor to call the STARS department (and when I asked what this meant-the customer service rep said they didn't know but they would call for me-and didn't)... then, they said that it looked like I took the samples outside of the recommended collection window-which is incorrect-as I said I provided a collection sample to the CS team for approval, and they indeed approved it. Then, they said my doctor didn't order the test, which I proved false by providing the CS team a receipt and CCing my doctor on the email. Then, they said that the lab tossed the samples so I would have to redo it. Next-I was required to do the NutrEval® Plasma & Urine test. I was EXTREMELY antsy about doing this test as I drink over a gallon of fluids per day, and this required strict fluid and food restriction prior to sample collection. The doctor who drew my blood froze the samples as they always do, and brought them to fedex to ship. Next thing I know, a week or so later, I get an automated email from Rupa Health saying that I would need to perform the urine test (meaning more fluid/food/supplement/medication restriction) all over again-because ONE of the tubes in the kit arrived "too warm to test". When I contacted my doctor and Rupa health, not ONE person would own up to ANY errors here. My doctor spoke directly with Rupa health, who admitted to them that they had been having issues with fedex, and that the samples were "2 days in transit" vs. priority overnight and that the rest of the vials of blood and urine magically were at the right temperature to test, but the organic acids were not (how in the world does this make sense to anyone!?) When I informed the CS team about my doctors conversation with them-they said "we have had no issues with fed ex-who told you this???" It has been absolutely terrible dealing with this company. When I asked for a partial refund for having to go through all of this AGAIN-they said all they could do was offer a 10% refund but I would have to collect it from my doctor-which, surprise surprise, won't respond to my emails. I would not recommend ANYONE use Genova Diagnostics or Rupa Health for their testing, unless you want to go through the physical and emotional turmoil that they have put me through these past 2 months. read more

Adam did private message me on here, which I did not know was possible on yelp, so I did not see until a few days ago. I do appreciate the response however, I still stand by my original review in that their billing practices are not clear and are shady. I specifically asked, when sending in a test, what I would be held liable for if insurance did not cover it. What I was told and what I was billed did not in any realm match up. I contacted them many many times via their online system (which is what they say to do) and received zero response. Now I received an email (sent towards the end of the year but sadly in spam so I did not get it) saying that they discounted the amount that I complained about but that it had to be paid within a certain time frame before that amount was changed from $206 to $2k. I did not receive any communication of this discounted amount and I do open all of my physical mail. I certainly would have and would be happy to pay the $206 given this is what it was supposed to be from the start. That was not offered to me! Inflating an amount from $200 to $2k (after you've overbilled/ made a billing mistake and my insurance has paid over 2k) is just fraudulent and bad practice for a medical company. Furthermore- when I replied to the email it bounced back. I would like to get this resolved as, after communicating with me and not resolving ANYTHING, they sent said bill into collections. Now not only is it looming but it's affecting my credit. Frustrating given their mistakes and my efforts to contact them. I certainly would appreciate someone helpful to get this resolved and, given their part, a removal of this from my credit report. Not surprised by the reviews posted on here and on Google. My experience with this company is a joke every step of the way. I've been dealing with digestive issues for years and eventually found a naturopath who wanted to get me tested with Genova. I followed all the instructions to a T, paid out of pocket, and sent in my kit. The results I got was zero data, for some reason they processed results but everything was blank. My Naturopath said there was something wrong and I had to do it again. I asked him about payment and he said Genova told him I could resubmit a new kit at no extra cost, so I did. This time I atleast got data but no conclusive results and now they're trying to bill me an extra $500. I'm fine paying for one test, but not for paying for two when I was told there would be no extra cost for my second test. After all of this I found a new Digestive Specialist who put me on Biofilm DIsruptors and had me do a test with GI Map. The test from GI Map found two very conclusive results that I can now take action with from a single stool sample instead of the 10 samples I had to send to Genova. Not only that, but my new DIgestive Specialist told me she didn't trust the Genova results at all, from me or other patients she's worked with. I wonder why... Honestly, I've had nothing but headache and frustration with this company for multiple issues. All of their incompetencies ended up dragging out my time resulting in suffering with my symptoms for many months longer. And now they expect me to pay for an extra test. This company is either completely incompetent or greedy or both. The negative reviews are valid, and I WISH I would've read the reviews first instead of just taking my doctor's word for taking this test. Their entire business model should be reevaluated. I was billed an initial $214 then my insurance was billed and they paid through then I was billed an additional $250 after insurance paid because they specifically do not stay in network in order to bill whatever they want. They would rather have your money than work with you. They lost any future business of mine and my entire family as well as any recommendations I would give. Unfortunately you see more companies in it for the money which is exactly what we have here. When I called customer service they said they have 80% of customers with the same concern so they cannot adjust my bill. if you have that many customers cling in unhappy maybe reevaluate your billing practices. read more
