    Hacked DPF from General RV

    The Issue: General RV Center in Ashland VA illegally sold us a very expensive used Tiffin motorhome that was hacked for diesel emissions and it cost us close to 7000 dollars to make it legal to drive again. And then they refused to cover the cost. It is illegal for a motor vehicle dealer in Virginia to sell a vehicle that does not meet current emissions standards, and they know that. Background story: We bought a 2019 Tiffin Wayfarer from General RV Center in Ashland VA back in May 2025. While the camper wasn't perfect, it was in very nice shape and had the features we wanted for some longer trips during our retirement. I've had a motorhome for a while, but never had one with a diesel motor. The coach drove well for the test drive and on the trip home, about 100 miles. Looking online, it had 3 outstanding recalls with Mercedes for the chassis and I didn't understand why they were never completed but figured I would get it serviced myself. About a week after getting it home, the dash lit up with warning lights. I thought it might be the rear wheel sensors which was one of the recall items. I drove it in the the MB dealer in limp mode at 30mph and left it with them. About 4 days later they called and asked if I had done anything to the emissions system, I said no. They told me that the diesel particulate filter (DPF) had been hacked and parts modified so that it could not work anymore. Apparently this is a thing people do so they don't have to deal with adding DEF fluid and try to get better mileage. As part of that hack, they download and overwrite the vehicle's computer software with a "Tune" so it won't recognize that the emission system isn't working anymore. It is not legal in the US and is advertised for "off road use only" One of the 3 recall items included a reflash of the computer, so now I knew why it was never done. The coach stayed at the MB dealership for about 3 weeks. The DPF was replaced (over 3500 for the part alone) along with the SCR which is like a diesel catalytic converter. All told, it cost about 6800 to make the coach legal again. If I had continued to drive the coach or had tried to sell the coach myself without fixing it, I would be guilty of a crime. After the repair at the MB dealer, I had the coach back at General RV in Ashland VA so they could repaint the front bumper which was part of the deal we made when we bought it. When the coach was done (4 weeks to paint a bumper) I picked it up and had a conversation with the manager, Ben. He claimed they did not know anything about the emissions system being hacked. When I dropped the coach off for the bumper repair, I asked Danny, the service rep at General if they worked on diesel vehicles there. He assured me that they have great master diesel mechanics on staff. So why one of their great mechanics never looked it over before they tried to sell it or did and they said nothing, is another mystery to me. The day I picked up the coach, the operations manager Ben, went off for a few minutes and came back and offered to cover half of the repairs. He knew they were in the wrong, otherwise he would have offered me nothing. I want them to cover what the repairs cost me, nothing more, nothing less. As a licensed motor vehicle dealer, they should have never had the vehicle up for sale with hacked emissions. If one of their great diesel mechanics had given it a check, he would have seen the hacked SCR just by looking underneath the camper since the weld was visible even at that point. I have complaints in with the Virginia attorney general's consumer affairs office as well as the Better Business bureau regarding this matter. General RV Center has a huge showroom with lots of people and many RV's on the lot. I would have never guessed that they would sell me a vehicle that was not legal to drive. My advice to anybody looking to spend a large amount of money on an RV, especially one with a motor in it would be to look elsewhere since General RV Center is only interested in getting your money and keeping it.

    I honestly never expected to be giving General RV a 5 star review for various reasons on the front end of the sale and experience with our previous repair account manager, but when I arrived for repair for a recall item I got signed in with a woman who seemed to be in charge of the repair reps and mentioned our experience with our previous rep and she reassigned us with another rep and he was amazing...very clear about what is covered under warranty and what is not and set expectations about our work order time. The a/c turned out to be just a wire that had shaken out of the wire nut and they fixed it and we were on our way....the stove recall was fixed and we are on the road again. Restored our faith in General RV with that experience.

    The customer care team is incapable of doing anything to resolve situations. Been down the road with those folks. Waste of time speaking with them. Like all RV dealers they make the sale and then there on to the next sucker. The advice I give anyone contemplating buying an RV is to take a few hour and sit in their service department. You will see what your getting ready to deal with. Scary

    My husband and I had a wonderful experience at General RV. We worked with the Sales Team of Jeff McCarthy and Lyn Lowery. Their expertise is unmatched in the industry. They helped us find the best RV to meet our needs and then assisted greatly to get us the best deal! The Sales Manager, Jimmy worked with a boat broker to get a very fair trade-in amount! Just when we thought we had met the best of the team our experience had just begun. Justin, the Business Manager reached out to assist with the remaining financing. His professionalism was stellar. He even helped us get last minute insurance because in the whirlwind of events it was one of the things that slipped our minds. Thanks again, Justin! Lisa, the Delivery Coordinator is like a big sister. She keeps you straight every step of the way and treats you like family. Our Delivery Technician, Brian was great. He went over every aspect of the coach with us and helped with any questions. Before our final departure, Lisa introduced us to our Service Technician, Danny Browder. He set us up for an appointment after our "shake-down" trip to ensure that anything that needs fixed gets immediate attention. Tyler from service took care of our prep and hitch work. He didn't have a lot explaining to do as we are previous RV owners, but he ensured that our rig was set beautifully when we pulled out of the dealership. We bought a 2026 Brinkley. General RV registered the RV immediately with Brinkley! We received our welcome to the Brinkley Family gift long before others online. It was just the cherry on the top of all the other great service we received from this entire team.

    We purchased a new RV from General RV in Ashland, Va on May 14,2025. Our salesman Chris Sickal was PHENOMENAL!!! We have shopped other companies and were turned off by the pressure tactics. Chris listened to our wants, heard our capped price range, and took the time to find us what we were looking for. If you are shopping for the perfect RV, look for him. That guy is the best.

After speaking to Keith briefly, he assured me that he wouldn't cancel and I booked the rental. When I arrived at the event on the first day, the trailers was there waiting completely set up, just like Keith said it would be. The trailer itself was nice except for a few inconsequential wear and tear items and had more than enough room for the four of us that went in on the rental. We had no issues with it at all throughout the rental period. On the last day of the rental, I contacted Keith a couple of times via text to wrap up the return of the trailer which he said he would pick up after we left the event. This was a GREAT experience and I will DEFINITELY use them again and again.

The communication, process and customer service were all top notch. Keith helped us get all set up and on the road. The camper was in great shape, super clean, and exactly as pictured. It was perfect for our family of four and the kids got a kick out of the bunk beds. We didn't use the shower just to save on the grey water tank fill but I did appreciate that it had a tiny bath tub which would be amazing if you had a toddler or baby - you could definite easily bath a small kid in there to avoid the shenanigans of a small kid in a campsite shower. The kitchen was great - coffee pot, one good sharp knife, utensils, etc. HIGHLY recommend both Richmond RV Rentals and this specific camper!!!!

We called on the way there to let them know we needed a brake controller installed. They seemed like they would be helpful in assisting us. Upon our arrival the parts guy asked if we already had a 7-way connector, we said we did. He went on to say that he recommend a Bluetooth wireless controller. He grabbed one off the shelf and retail rang it up. We thought the total was very pricey but we were in a hurry and didn't bother to check the receipt. Long story short, when we got home 3 hours later my wife looked at the receipt. They charged us $91 for installation, there was no installation involved, but they made it sound like they had to install it. The part literally plugs into the 7-pin connector. They also charged $20 for shop supplies. Again, no shop supplies were used. The truck was never moved by them, and again, the part simply plugs into the 7-pin connector on the bumper of the tow vehicle. Lastly, and this is most important, they charged us $52 for a 3-year protection plan on the part. To sum things up, none of this was discussed with us and we are out about $163. I called the next day and explained all this to a female service manager, we talked about 10 mins, she told me that those items should have been discussed with us prior to the part going to the part department. She also stated that she would call me back, I never received a call back. All this after we just purchased a camper from Camping World. Besides returning the part for a refund at a closer Camping World I will never step foot in another one again.
