I have been passing by this chocolate and ice cream spot for years. About time I turn the car around and stop in, especially on a blistering hot day of trekking. Perused the plethera of chocolate candy. Opted for a ready-made box of assorted chocolates (tasty treat for my co-workers). Then, it was ice cream time. Selected a single scoop of a concoction which included peanut butter and chocolate in a cone. Very satisfying. Staff was helpful and pleasant. Store was well organized. I go out of my way to go here for ice cream. They have different flavors all the time. I prefer hard ice cream over soft & they have chocolate chip (a lot of places only serve mint choc chip) They're conveniently located on RT 51S. They also have a huge selection for candy. I have been enjoying Gene&Boots candy since childhood, not a spring chicken. The chocolates are handmade on-site and very delicious. The shop is a delight and the ice cream shop which is in a separate area within the store is wonderful as well. This is authentic PA chocolate. This quality is not available elsewhere for the most part. Trust me, I've tried here and abroad. If you are bringing small children perhaps it would be best to center yourself in the ice cream shop. Gene & Boots is nostalgic for me. I haven't been here in years, but I stopped on my way to Uniontown today at the Rt 51 location. Silly me not thinking- it's the day before Valentine's Day, and this place was packed! Mostly with men who were definitely picking up last minute gifts. we always drive by and talk about stopping, today we finally stopped. it just frustrated me because i had my children with me and their 5 y/o sibling. everyone was excited to see all the candy, then the one worker came out. watching our every move as if we were invading her space. tried to be nice and told her we're gonna get ice cream. she made the stuff, i tipped her $5, still she watched as if we were going to steal from them. she said "it costs more if you use a card" i said that's fine. my children's 5y/o sibling wanted a tiny bag of doritos for $.50 so i bought it. the worker said"are you gonna buy anything from the other side too" i said not sure yet, but probably. then the other worker came out, she was even more rude the way she looked as if we were doing something wrong, like we were going to steal. i could feel the negativity in the air so i said "i feel uncomfortable here" a candy store marketed for kids and you treat children like criminals? not my kind of vibe. so they pick some candy after we spent $16($15 if i would've had cash with me, which i did but used the card anyway) on a 2 drinks and an ice cream cone & $.50 bag of doritos, get to the other counter, the 5y/o put the bag of doritos on the counter, no big deal i said "just hold that, we already paid for that." the lady goes over around the corner tries calling the other girl who doesn't answer and it only a hop skip and jump away, to find out if we actually paid for the stupid $.50 doritos. meanwhile we bought a $7 lollipop and my son wanted a bunch of .30 ea chocolate poker chips, you know the kind made out of terrible wax chocolate, a little rabbit chocolate lollipop and 2 big gold wax chocolate coins for $1.25 each. came to $16 and some change. and she's worried (rude) if we're stealing a $.50 bag of doritos for a 5 y/o. if it were my store i would've given a new to the world 5 y/o the stupid bag of doritos. her not being able to verify we already paid the $.50 for them and wasting our time treating us like criminals i finally said, you can put the $.50 on there and i'll just pay it again if you don't believe us! RIDICULOUS! i feel like i got robbed of $33 for the uncomfortable experience! on the way out i said to my daughter "don't these people know that people leave reviews these days" terrible business practices for a place geared towards kids! ignorant! oh yeah, forgot to mention, the card worked on the ice cream register, but got rejected on the candy register, so i had to pay cash. had plenty of money on it so obviously they didn't ring it the same way! WE WONT BE BACK! and i hope they know that not everyone that doesn't fit the perfect american dream family mold are criminals! you're actually the criminals with those markups. i'm a businessman, i know what that crap costs you to get in. 98% markup! if you have your own brand of chocolate, at least make sure it's better than hersheys. it's definitely not. its closer to that crappy wax chocolate that those coins are made out of. would be better to melt some discs into your own molds. i'm easy going, definitely not a Karen, but these folks made me irritated while trying to do something nice for my children! This is a cute locally-owned candy shop with an ice cream parlor! The peanut butter cup fudge swirl I had was amazing and there were so many chocolates, gummies and hard candies to choose from! I'd definitely recommend stopping for holiday candies different (and probably better tasting) than what you'd find at standard stores! read more

Seriously, when you walk in you're in heaven. It maybe small, but there are many chocolates to choose from. It was hard for me to choose, so I ended up getting the small truffle sampler. I've driven past this little candy shop in the Perryopolis section of Route 51 a billion times, and heard from family in the area that the candy is wonderful, but always seem to be in a rush to or from somewhere and never stop in. On this particular weekend, I had a low-key day in front of me (and absolutely no need for chocolate after a Christmas filled with it, but decided not to let that stop me). I was dying to see if this adorable shop was as cute as it looks from the outside, and I am happy to report that not only is it the most charming little candy shop, filled to the brim with every kind of chocolate you could ever want as well as lots of classic, nostalgic types of candies, but the chocolate is up there in Sarris's league, and I don't say that lightly. On top of that, they have an attached ice cream shop with wonderful hard ice cream where you can get a sundae, milkshake or a pint to take home. They also have Nathan's hot dogs available for a dollar, as well as chips and sodas. You can get your candy pre-packaged in purple boxes that would make for a beautiful gift presentation, or have them measure out the amount you want from their case. I did a mixture of both of these, and the staff was super helpful. I can't believe I have just driven past this wonderful candy and ice cream for all of these years, and I am looking forward to stopping by again! read more

I have went most of my life hearing about gene and boots candy, but never actually visited until a few months ago. The building itself is small but quaint. The Gene & Boots sign with big ice cream cones can be seen from a distance from both directions of route 51, drawing intrigue from travelers. Just from looking at the outside you know you are going to feel like a kid in a candy store, no matter your age. To add to the atmosphere, you will find a little gingerbread bread house attached to the store. Once inside the long narrow shop you will notice the overpowering scent of sugar. That's because they have abundance of everything chocolate and sweet from the basic chocolate covered pretzels to foot long gummy snakes. If you continue into the gingerbread house, you will find a small ice cream shop. They make cones, sundaes and milkshakes at reasonable prices. As well as hot dogs for 1$ and some unique bottled sodas. Overall it's worth a stop by. I promise you there is something in store for everyone! read more

A wonderful old 3-D billboard, featuring a warped character stirring a cauldron, foreshadows the delights that lie ahead. Heading down Route 51 South from Pittsburgh toward Uniontown, it's difficult to miss this marvelous celebration of pastels galore, purple neon, anthropomorphic ice cream cones and gingerbread...! "Wait, you didn't see it?! Turn around, we're going back!!!" Gene and Boots Chocolate Factory is irresistibly kitschy; this was a three star review before I even went inside! Admittedly, the interior environment is less sensational, but it still warrants that "kid in a candy store" feeling, for real, so I guess I just mean that I felt like a kid! I rediscovered an old favorite, they call 'em Misty Mints, and my excitement over these will melt only very slowly. The chocolates that I've tried so far are delicious and I look forward to arranging a custom box for somebody special someday. And beside gifts for every occasion, I reckon this is a fantastic place to take the little brats in your life. read more

It's amazing! I have been going here since I was a tiny girl and am a senior citizen and will continue to go there. I have fond memories of going inside as a child and getting a white chocolate bunny. I continue to mail order and have always been extremely pleased. I order for family by mail order and when the candy is received, they rave about the taste (and they are picky). Adults need to go there to experience the "kid" in them, and if they have children, they need to go there. There is something for everybody.
