I can appreciate the old days and how some businesses have worked to preserve that time period. This was our family's first time at this theater on a rainy Easter Sunday. Parking nearby in the public lot was convenient as was buying tickets online. $15 total for 3 matinee tickets was affordable in today's economy. Popcorn and drinks were also priced significantly below other larger theaters. I love the character of this theater and the friendly welcoming staff. We will be back soon! read more

The Aesthetic: Retro, single screen theater with original, charming decor and affordable tickets/snacks. The Price: This is the most affordable theater around, the tickets are only $4 matinee and $5 regular. The candy is $1 per pack and drinks were $2! The Parking: It's difficult to get a spot right in front because it's on a main road, but there is plenty of parking on the side streets surrounding the theater. My Order: We got 2 tickets to Super Mario for $8, 2 candies for $2, and 1 drink for $2. A date night for $12 is a steal! My only downside was that the seats haven't been renovated, so they were harder than other theaters, and I felt it! At least they look pretty. It won't deter me from coming back for another date. The Conclusion: It's truly a gem, go here and support a beautiful business in a small town. read more

I rave about this theatre to everyone I know. It has become so rare these days to see the preservation of such a beautiful, historic site. I cannot say enough positive things about "The Gem." I love the marquis, the friendly people, the peace it brings to me, the inexpensive pricing, the awesome balcony seating, the historical art upstairs...of all the places I send people in the greater Charlotte area, I tell them to go here. I frequent the Gem Theatre quite often because it's a cost effective, old style theatre that features the latest first run movies. Tickets cost $5, all snacks are $1, a small popcorn is $1.75 and a medium is $2.50; drinks are reasonable as well. I really love that this theatre is never crowded, but if I had any complaints they would be that the floors are sticky, you need to get your concessions prior to the start of the movie because the concession stand closes a few minutes after the movie starts and that the staff is sparse! No big deal, I'll be back. read more

The name could not suit this place any better! Truly a gem in todays time! Cheap movie prices, cheap concessions, and old time charm wrapped into one. It's seriously a step back into time and I absolutely love it!! There are no reclining seats or reserved seats like todays modern time, so if you remember back in the day the struggle of first come first served movie seating, it's definitely best you get there early. My first time here and I saw Barbie, but I will certainly be back for other movies. $5 movie and my snacks (popcorn, drink and candy) totaled to just $6, a total win! read more

This is an amazing little theater that we visited while traveling. It is a historic old theater restored and showing first run movies. Only one screen so only one or two different movies a month. We were amazed at how little is charged and the small price for popcorn and a drink! Very comfortable seats. The only complaint was so little parking nearby and we needed the walk anyway. read more

This theater feels like the keepers of time just pressed the pause button here, and I like it. Now don't get it wrong, this theatre is not in disrepair it's wonderfully retro! You can't miss their cool display, with the nostalgic marquis letters. They play second-run movies and generally have a single feature film. It's not a multiplex, and again... I actually like that. It is typically a family-friendly film showing. This is a discount theater, so you can actually purchase really good movie popcorn and other snacks here without breaking the bank. This feels like a place you either love or hate. Its a great price $4/person and is obviously an older theater. Its a simple theater that has its own charm. It has standard stadium seats that have seen better days but it feels like youre stepping back in time. If you buy your tickets online, make sure you kill some trees by printing them. If you do not print them, they will not allow you to enter the movie theater. The Gem Theatre is the best movie theater if you are looking to see a movie at a good price. If you go before 6pm it is $4 for everyone. If you go after 6pm, it is $5 for adults and $4 for children. The snack/ drink prices are cheaper compared to other movie theaters. The theater is also located in a great area that is currently being updated and remodeled. The movies at the theatre are normally kid friendly and also don't have much previews if any. I highly recommend this theater to anyone. read more

My lovely wife of 46 years of marital bliss and I went on a movie date this afternoon to see "Rogue One" and were so glad that we decided upon the Gem Theater in Kannappolis. The moderate line moved quickly, and all tickets for the 1600-hour showing were $4. Snacks were reasonably priced with a huge bucket of popcorn for only $4 and a large fountain drink for $2.50. With 960 seats, we were able to pick out the exact seat locations we wanted. Yet, despite its spaciousness, the setting seemed intimate. Pellet ice! $1 candy! Three tickets and snacks for less than $20 TOTAL! I have no idea why it took me so long to try the Gem, but I am 100 percent sold. My children and I today saw the newest "Pirates" movie and had a wonderfully retro movie experience in downtown Kannapolis at the Gem. Before the movie started, they showed a Tom & Jerry cartoon as well as the singing, dancing popcorn concession clip. So cute! Reasonably priced concessions, crazy cheap tickets ($3 per person before 6p) for first run movies and there's a balcony! We'll be going back for sure. read more

A classic theater which allows great entertainment value alone with reasonable concession prices. One does not have to take out a second mortgage on the home just to go to a movie at the Gem. I was fortunate to have grown up attending movies at the Gem on a regular basis, so a movie experience here is not only a throwback in time but to childhood also. In conclusion: there's nothing like experiencing a movie at the Gem. You may not have 47 screens to choose from, but you're not in a simple concrete block building either. First of all I LOVE vintage. The originality of the building, from the cracks in the walls and old seats, I was really feeling it. This theater mostly features family-oriented movies and only hosts one movie at a time. The auditorium is so humongous that even on a busy nite I, thankfully, did not have to sit next to a stranger. What I was not pleased with was all the trash everywhere, in the lobby areas and theater. It is understandable that on a busy nite the auditorium will not be pristine clean, but trash cans were overflowing and sticky floors and stuff left in seats is just not cool. Perhaps it was just an off nite... I do plan to visit again at some point because it is just too beautiful of a place to give up on + can't beat the pricing. read more

The theatre itself is great but if you get concessions make sure you ask for low ice or you won't get any soda. If your drink looks like mine cause you only get 8 oz of actual drink in your large ICE, don't go back and complain cause it's their policy to make sure you only have ice and their policy won't allow them to fix it to make a customer happy either so ask for no ice or you'll not get any soda at all. The sodas are reasonably priced unless you realize you paid $2.50!for a large ice. read more

I love going to the family-friendly and reasonably priced Gem Theatre. I remember going there as a kid, and I love the fact it hasn't been remodeled. They still show an occasional Tom and Jerry cartoon, my dad and I always enjoyed those. Sitting in the balcony is still such a fun experience. I had a special issue come up and they fielded multiple, I'm sure annoying, questions on my part over the course of two days. They always answered me promptly and were always super friendly. We LOVE the Gem - It's, well... a GEM! What a unique experience. It's one of the few operating single-screen theaters in the country!!! Very historic and shows current showings. It tends to target families with children, so it usually has PG or G rated films... I prefer at least a PG13 and don't think I've ever seen an R-Rated film here, but I don't mind that. I've even gone to see cartoon movies here - which I would never do at an AMC or Regal. It's just that fun! SUPER AFFORDABLE! Candy is (I believe) $1, soda around $2, and popcorn only about $3. Tickets are less than $5 per person, though the line can be VERY long to get in. Still, worth it. The only compliant I have is that once the movie gets going, concessions close. So just make sure you get a large and don't expect refills, because there's not anyone there to serve you. Truly, an experience for people of ALL AGES! read more

We sat in the balcony which was super cool and my 5 year old son loved it. Price of the movie, only $4 before 4pm and $5 after for adults and $4 for kids. Concession prices were great also. Admission for 2, two medium popcorns, and a large drink for less than $16---you just cannot beat that! This is an old theater though, so beware that the floor doesn't slope like the newer theaters so if someone with a huge pumpkin head sits in front of you, you might not be able to see. We love the Gem. It's an old one movie at a time theatre. It's a nice evening out with the whole family without breaking the bank. Admission is only $5 and the concessions are completely reasonable. It has balcony seating and is very nostalgic. We hope that with the plans of renovating that area of Kannapolis that they do not take the Gem. read more
