We stopped in to Gelson's Market yesterday and picked up a few things we are visiting in the area. We chose some items from the deli counter, 4 different salads (Very pricey) but they looked so good. We asked for a pound of each...the pesto salad, a pear chicken salad, a potato salad and a shrimp salad ($19.99 for a pound). Every one of them were terrible...no flavor...there were 4 of us and we had some ribs that we made ourselves to go with the salads. We ended up throwing the salads in the trash! $40 worth of salads! The store is a beautiful store... but the prices were extremely out of reach...saw a small package of Lamb Chops- $60!! I realize lamb is pricey, but this is outrageous... read more

I enjoy shopping at Gelson's market. Their produce department is wonderful with fresh fruits and vegetables. Their meat department always has nice variety of different meats. Love their bakery, always fresh and delicious specially their cakes, if you have any kind of parties don't hesitate to get cakes and cookies from them. This market is very clean which I appreciate and you always can find baskets to start shopping, they're very organized and have enough staff to take care of you and other things in the store. The only thing I would criticize about this market is the price of some items that's ridiculously high. For example their precut fruits that they sell in medium containers are about $38.00 to $52.00 which you can get for half price or less in other markets other than that I would recommend everyone to shop there. read more

I don't shop at Gelson's often because it's a little expensive for me. I love to bake pies cakes and cookies, So, I'm a little picky on my baked goods. I bought a cake from the bakery yesterday and it was incredible and divine. This was a small cake that was $27. It was well worth every penny! Since I baked myself, if I'm going to buy a special dessert I usually go to a fancy bakery because most grocery stores have a standard of sugary average desserts. This cake had a beautiful sunflower on top, and it was considered a white cake with fudge icing. I figured the topping was going to be either very sugary or textured poorly because it was so beautiful. Surprisingly, it was like a whipped cream icing that melted in your mouth. The cake was moist and the chocolate filling was surprisingly delicious and melt in your mouth chocolate . It was not like any regular store-bought cake I've ever purchased. This cake was worth every penny I paid! But wait, when I checked out, I had a young male checker who played the bass and a young male bagger who was friendly and complementary. Their positive attitude and friendliness made my day. My entire 10 minute experience at Gelson's was a 10+ Thank you Gelsons for doing an outstanding job! Great customer service and the best bakery in Orange County! I live in Laguna Niguel, and if I am going to purchase a dessert for a special occasion I usually drive to Newport Beach to a special bakery. This is a great Gelsons location. Excellent staff, very friendly friendly and helpful. Clean and well stocked store. While I don't always shop here, its nice to switch it up once in awhile since they carry products some regular grocery stores don't. Love their fresh produce, meats and bakery selection, everything is great quality. Prices are high but they do have sales and the products I feel are worth it. My grandparents live close to Gelson's, which is a good excuse for me to stop by when I'm in the neighborhood. Sure, there is one closer to me in Irvine but I really like this location for some reason. Maybe because it's practically on the beach and located in the mecca of *real* and desperate housewives. I swear the people-watching is better than the corner of Rodeo and Wilshire. I always feel under-developed and very pale when I come here. It's like being 13 all over again. I love it. Spotlessly clean and well-stocked with everything you need and a lot of things you don't, Gelson's caters to people that don't like to cook or bake. I like to do both, but sometimes mama needs a break. If you need to pick up lunch, dinner, or a fabulous dessert, than go to Gelson's. Their deli selection is great and so is the bakery. The desserts are gorgeous and look delicious. Even the florist area is fabulous and always well stocked with beautiful flowers and arrangements. I also want to add that if you know me or know my reviews, than you know that I always need some good Challah bread in the house. Gelson's has excellent Challah bread of different varieties - plain egg, poppy seed, and raisin. Pricey, but worth it. Go to Gelson's. You'll love it. Oh, and enjoy the views. read more

This is the most confused market I have ever seen. As an upscale market, you would expect it be on par with Whole Foods/Bristol Farms quality. NOPE. Just basic, average grocery store stuff, at prices that will make your eyes fall out (in a bad way.) It's basically just an Albertons. Whole foods gives you the farm's information where your meat comes from, Gelson's just says "USDA ..." which is the same way every big-box grocery store labels their meats. Produce was equally unimpressive. The boxed goods are the same that every grocery store has. I can think of no reason what so ever to shop here. read more

This is one of the nicest grocery stores in OC....a place where they still have butchers to help you out, produce men that know their stuff, a killer bakery (Viktor Bene alligators, yum!) and an excellent deli. Customers wait for their house-baked bread, which is made all day long. The manager Tim runs a tight ship here, and it shows. Yes, lots of the items are more expensive than Vons or Ralphs, but many are the same price-that being said, you do get what you pay for. As someone who loves to cook, it's great to be able to get top-quality ingredients (and know they have a big enough turnover that things like balsamic vingegar haven't been sitting on the shelf since the Clinton administration). Great place, immaculate, higher end. Friendly and helpful staff. Deli is pretty good. Bakery is very nice. The seafood is very good (love their halibut steaks and shrimp), but the real draw IMHO is the produce. You know how you go go Ralphs and pick through the pile of apples for the best looking ones? Seems like Gelsons has already done this for me, every apple in their apple cart is top-notch. The same or for the rest of their produce. On average, Gelson's runs about 50% more than Ralphs, and they don't take coupons or haves frequency club cards or club card specials. If you can't pony the bill, it's best to save Gelsons for the occasional top quality must have item and do your regular shopping at the bigger chains. read more

This is the ONLY grocery store for me when I'm in Dana Point. I used to live literally next door to a Gelson's in Pacific Palisades when I was young fabulous and broke. Back then it seemed really pricey to me, and I would avoid doing major shopping trips there but instead just went over and admired the perfectly lined up cans and bottles on the shelves and the upscale vibe of the place. Honestly I think Gelson's prices are now very competitive with the big chains. Especially if you buy the advertised sale items. They don't play games and make you join some BS "club" the prices are for everyone. There are true bargains to be had, notably on wine. The staff are friendly and helpful. The produce is top notch quality, however the regular prices are high. Like $3 for an avocado. At least they sell avos grown in Fallbrook, so I don't mind helping my neighbors out in the current economy. Oh yeah, and Dylan the bagger is a very cool and hard working young man. read more

This place is great and their employees provide excellent customer service. Sandy did an incredible job and packaged my groceries with the utmost of care. The way she handled my delicate produce showed me she genuinely cared about the customer. She was highly professional and not to mention attractive. Her eyes were like two luscious brown M&M's swimming in a sea of organic whole milk. Her figure, hotter than the two bags of hot cheetos and tapatio sitting perfectly bagged in my shopping cart. Meh! I stopped in with the girls on our way to the Laguna house this weekend. We were at the deli and at the bakery. Both not good! The Matza Balls were not very flavorful, the other dishes looked old and yucky and they charged us $16 instead of $8 for the Matza Balls. My friend caught the mistake and they charged us correctly the second time. We got 3 different types of cookies from the deli. All were dry and very plain. We really didn't like anything we bought except the Butternut Kale Salad. It was fresh and yummy! Maybe it's a good store for everyday shopping and maybe the deli is good earlier in the day but at night the food looked old and sad and I was afraid I would get sick eating it. Trying to find a specific product that is seasonal can be tough. Broguiere's Egg Nog is this product! I contacted this store to see if they had any in stock and was told that they did. Well that same day I dropped by your store and looked at your shelf and it was completely empty. I went to the front desk and asked the two gentlemen that were chit-chatting and was told that they would be getting some in the following day. Just a thought for customer service.... Maybe you should have taken my name and number down and contacted me when you get some in and not give people the run around. A waste of my time and gas cannot be replaced. read more

I meant to post this a while ago, it's the holidays and besides I've been vacillating. Do I leave a bad review for the place I love so much? I guess I do. The Saturday before Christmas I went to Gelson's. I love their bakery and their deli. At the deli no else was waiting. A young male clerk offered to help and I said I wasn't ready. When I was ready the young man was at the opposite end helping another customer by the meat section. I was still the only customer. I think it was around 11am but it could have been later. Another gentleman approached the deli counter. Then a woman. A female clerk entered the area behind the counter. She avoided my eyes and walked around behind the counter. It seemed like a long time and I finally asked, "Can I get some help?" she curtly said "Take a number. We go by numbers." I was flabbergasted. For descriptive purposes the deli clerk was round, shorter statured, maybe Mexican, long hair pulled back. I find myself reluctant to return. She was so rude. read more

The deli FOOD has been great. We are glad to have figured that out since buying our second home in Monarch Beach. I just have to say that while there are a couple fantastic employees at the deli counter there are a few who should be replaced. Tired, bitter, act like they are doing you a favor by helping you. I see them wasting time, dragging their feet, hoping you'll give up and leave so they can go back to doing....nothing, I assume. I hope a manager comes across this and gets those ladies in line over there and soon, I'm not one to put up with bad service, there are too many other places to do my shopping at to put up with bad customer service. read more

This review is specifically for the Cafe/Deli that they have in the market: I surprised my fiance at work and we wanted to grab something quick for lunch so that he could get back to the office so we headed to Gelson's and grabbed a salad and a sandwich. I was so impressed by the customer service that I had to write a review! Juanita was the first employee who approached me and she was so sweet and so helpful because I obviously looked so confused when I walked up. There are so many items to choose from I didn't know what to do. She explained to me about their sandwiches and their side items so I felt a little more confident when I ordered. I ordered a tuna salad sandwich on rye bread with 2 sides - spinach & butternut squash. I loved everything! I never thought that I would get such friendly customer service at a grocery store. All of the employees were smiling and eager to help. I really appreciated that. The best part of it all was the little mini picnic that the fiance and I had. We grabbed our food to go and headed over to a grassy area to the right of Gelson's (if you are facing it) past all of the buildings. It was a gorgeous day with not a cloud in the sky and we had a breathtaking view of the ocean. It was simple and perfect. It really is the little things in life :) read more

Monarch bay plaza is a wonderful shopping center but there is no where else to quick up a quick bite for lunch. I wondered in to Gelson's thinking that I might fine some sad little sandwich. Wow, I was surprised by their gourmet deli. First off, the place was packed with lunch customers. They had large cases for both hot and cold prepared foods. Last week I ordered a turkey sandwich and the nice person working at the counter carefully wrote down what I wanted on the sandwich and prepared it for me with the items in the deli. Returned today for lunch and got a ham sandwich, salad and veggie medly. Food was tasty! Nice and fresh just like homemade. Will continue to come here for lunch. Two things preventing a 5 star review: 1. With all the wonderful food that they have in the deli and the nice area for eating, they have the drinks three isles away and you have to pay at the regular checkout counters. Why not have a small case with juices, sodas and waters right there at the deli? Also, it would be easier to pay right there. 2. They don't have a menu board at the deli. It was a little confusing knowing what my lunch options were. In fact, learned that there is a half sandwich option from other yelp reviews. Service and food is premium and so are the prices... Best value is chilled soda for 55 cents a can! read more

What is there to say about Gelsons? It has quality selection and a knowledgable friendly staff. The deli selection is great (love the chicken tenders!), the wine selection is nice, and there is a decent organic selection. Gelsons puts other grocery stores to shame, but you do pay the price.
