Gelato picks was yummy! The gelato was creamy and smooth, and had a very authentic tasting flavor profile. We got the pistachio and the tiramisu. Both flavors were true to their intentions and I have no complaints about the gelato. On the other hand, my experience with the owner was a bit off putting. He had ended up scolding the little kid in front of me for spinning their flavor wheel, which I understand he can't have it spinning all day for fun, but at the say time, the kid was like 3 years old and there was no one else in the restaurant, let the kid live a little jeez. Also, he was pretty blunt and not smiley with us, so overall, it just made me and my party feel awkward and we left with a bad taste in our mouth. The prices were also pretty steep. Absolutely amazing story behind Dietmar Neidhardt, founder/owner of Gelato Picks in Sugar Land / Houston. He had a past life he retired from as an extremely successful Oil & Gas Executive and Petroleum Engineer (see pics) who, during the pandemic, attended all levels (beginner-to-advanced) of an online gelato-making class at an university in Bologna and started making gelato to share with his neighbors (when no restaurants were open). They loved his creations so much they kept begging him to open up a store post-COVID, and in 2021 he opened up Gelato Picks. In addition to gelato in scoop form, he specializes in the German-Italian fusion of "Spaghetti Gelato" or lemon-vanilla gelato shaped like spaghetti with a strawberry "tomato sauce" plus white chocolate "parmesan cheese" shavings on top. Crepes, espresso, mousse and other Italian delicacies are served at his shop. I got the spaghetti-flavored gelato - which is amazing - plus the guava and owner's choice (maybe a mix of macadamia nuts and chocolate). Starting with the positive: the gelato is good. Not great, just good. The not so good: First, it's overpriced. While I have plenty of disposable income, poor value doesn't inspire me to return. At about $2 per 1oz scoop, expect to pay $12 for an average sized serving. I know we had kids in your shop and they were being typical kids by peering into your display and using the step In front of the display case clearly marked 'not a step' and spinning your "help me decide on a flavor" device, while I was deciding on what to order (admittedly I did not notice the "no step" markings, but more on this shortly) Mind you, not obnoxious kids tearing things up, but more in the inquisitive type way as these things tend to pique their interest. After I placed my order the owner, comes out and begins to lecture me on the step in front of the display not being a step ( at this point I looked and saw where it was clearly written, so why put them there in the first place?) I immediately corrected my kids on this. Then he proceeded to say that the pinwheel is not a toy and if we break it, we'll pay for it. Just a little constructive criticism, as I'm sure in your mind you were just informing of your shop "rules". However, you may want to work on your customer service skills a bit. Your approach to this situation was poor. Since kids probably drive a lot of business into your little shop, either remove your pointless steps or learn a better bedside manner. At first sight Gelato Picks looks like a beautiful place to have gelato. The service was fantastic and had an amazing service. When we started ordering the first thing we noticed were the prices. They were extremely expensive, so our expectations were high. Next my friend ordered a salted caramel gelato, the gelato looked creamy and delicious. She chose salted caramel because normally that is a safe flavor that cannot be wrong. However, this salted caramel was disgusting and had no flavor of Carmel. A regular Sunday afternoon just turned spectacular because we happened to stop by a Gelato place for dessert, and were greeted by the hospitable and intelligent owner Dietmar. I find in my circle of friends, people with Engineering backgrounds seem to enjoy learning and tweaking the perfect formula for things like Gelato, Coffee, and Photography. Dietmar is a polyglot who speaks fluently German, English, French, and Spanish. His expertise and attention to detail in crafting his Gelato and Coffee are immediately evident once you sample the pride of his work. The Pistachio is one of the toughest Gelato to master because it needs a lot of careful babysitting to have the right temperature, texture, and flavor. We were completely satisfied with the Pistachio Gelato here, and we have tasted Gelato from Florence and Rome. The Caffe Barista which is Coffee flavored has the same rich flavor and the sweetness is just perfect. The price is so reasonable too compared to some other Gelato places that don't have the same level of quality. We have a Strawberry and Banana Crepe that's enjoyable, made from a recipe sent from Dietmar's daughter in France. It hits the spot when it's made warm and fresh. After the neighboring customers keep telling us they have the best coffee anywhere, we would be remiss if we don't try a Cappuccino as our dessert Espresso drink. The machine is a manual old-school professional equipment that takes skill to use properly. We love our Double Espresso-based coffee drink with Steamed Milk Foam, rich, smooth, and complex. Food is still the best excuse to connect with people, and today's visit to Dietmar's Gelato Picks is such a wonderful treat for us. During the time we were there, every customer is greeted like a friend by the owner and their faces are beaming with happiness and delight visiting this Gelato spot with old-world charm. This place is like no other - I usually deem an ice cream/gelato place good if I enjoy the flavors, the consistency is generally creamy, and it's a good price point; but Gelato Picks blows the competition out of the water, especially in terms of the texture. This is truly the most high quality gelato I've ever had and the Tex Mex flavor is one of my all-time favorites across any ice cream/gelato place I've been to. It may be a hair on the pricier side, but for the quality that you get, it is well worth it. Plus, you're supporting local! The gelato was good but not the best I've ever had. The flavors seemed a bit muted. The cookies and cream should've had a lot more Oreos in it. I also didn't like that I was limited to only 1 flavor for a small and only 2 flavors for a medium. I ended up getting 1 small and 1 medium only so we could try 3 different flavors. I heard several people ask for multiple flavors and everyone got denied. It doesn't make sense why they would limit us to 1 flavor if they're giving you two scoops of ice cream. I love trying different flavors so I'm only giving 4 stars. Definitely check this place out if you're ok to stick to 1-2 flavors. read more

Wow, this place is awesome. You can get Spaghetti Ice Cream!! The German ice cream that looks like spaghetti, (not the flavor). The "Noodles" are made from pressed gelato, the "Sauce" is strawberry compote, and the "Parmesan Cheese" of this dish is flakes of White Chocolate!! I popped in here recently to have after dinner dessert with my family and some friends. I've been wanting to check this place out for awhile now, so I was super excited to try their gelato. My first impression of the place was... not wonderful. We were offered samples upon entry but a "joke" about someone getting too much of one flavor was made when each child asked to try the same flavor. Unfortunately, this definitely soured my initial impression of the place. We were definitely not taking advantage of the samples, but were made to feel this way. The fact of the matter is- it's RSV Covid cold flu virus season... no one should be sharing sample sticks. Anyway, it bugged me so much that this was essentially my main takeaway from my visit here. The pistachio gelato that I got (and did not sample lol), however, was absolutely fab! I've been searching for that perfect blend of flavor and creaminess ever since I had gelato in Italy and this one really hit the spot.
