Usually, if you're a vegan, your gelato choices are limited to fruity sorbets. Mango and strawberry are nice and all, but there are times when you go with your non-vegan friends to a gelato shop and they order heaps of chocolatey and creamy things and you look longingly at it and think WHY CAN'T I HAVE THAT? At Gelato Blue, you can. That's because Gelato Blue is 100% vegan. In early 2016, they made the switch to all-vegan, and man oh man, it's wonderful to look in that display case and get to choose anything you want, from the fruit sorbets to the dulce de leche. I have never seen a vegan dulce de leche anywhere else in the world, so I promptly ordered it (and it was amazing). I also sampled the Swiss chocolate, which was also delish. It's probably good I don't live in Sydney because I would want to try every. single. flavour. Which isn't ideal for the waistline. The space itself is your typical gelateria -- a few tables and chairs squeezed into a narrow space. Service was friendly, and the price was fine. Next time I'm in Sydney, I'll definitely be back to sample a few more flavours! read more

Love this place. So many vegan sorbets to choose from, and they are rich and creamy--not just your typical fruit-based fare. I highly recommend anything with chocolate and they've recently had a coffee one that is AMAZING. My partner's favourite is the chocolate with cookie pieces (hint: goes great in their donut sundae). If you aren't in the mood for gelato/sorbet (incomprehensible to me, but you do you), try the Italian hot chocolate. It's rich with just the right amount of sweetness. It is literally like drinking chocolate. Vegan-friendly! Vegan donuts. I'll just leave it at that. Also, five star service whenever we've been and the owner (?) is lovely and so friendly! There isn't much that can go wrong with gelato - or so you might think. At the very least, you'd expect a flavour of vegan gelato to taste similarly to the way the non-vegan variant does. I got both mango and passion fruit in a cup, but I should have tasted them first. As soon as I tasted the passion fruit, I knew that something was wrong. This flavour usually has a tangy, sour taste to it. This, however, was mostly sweet. Not something I'm looking for in a passionfruit treat. It also had no passionfruit seeds - making me think that no actual passionfruit was involved in the production in this gelato! Why? It's vegan, sure, but passionfruit comes from a plant! The gelato itself had a weird, powdery texture. Not appetising in the least. I feel that even vegan gelato can be better than this by using actual passionfruit at the very least! Yu u u u u u um, that is the best way I can describe Gelato Blue in Newtown. They have really given themselves an edge over their competition in the gelato industry. Gelato has become such a big thing in Australia, with gelato shops all over Sydney offering many flavours, but Gelato Blue has extended this by also serving cannoli and who even needs gelato when there is cannoli. But they also sell a range of hand made chocolates as well as serving other desserts, they serve Italian hot chocolate (which is how hot chocolate should always be and Gelato shakes. But if you just want Gelato there are 43 mouth watering flavours. Personally I skipped the gelato and went straight for the cannoli and Italian hot chocolate and I have no regrets. read more

This gigantic, two-floor gelateria surprised me with some of the best gelato in the city. There is no reason to be blue when you come to this place, where an ocean-sized assortment of gelati might drown you in pure deliciousness. Whether you're a fan of the sweet and creamy or tart and fruity kind of gelati, you'll be able to find whatever you want here. There are absolutely amazing flavors like fig, coconut, and raspberry (I think I may have came up with my next cone!). Dairy based gelato include orgasmic Toblerone, Honey Macadamia, and classic chocolate. It is really hard to make a decision. Therefore, I recommend you make weekly visits so that you can sample everything. Hey, I never said I was a doctor. Not only is there gelato, but also a whole dessert menu of things like canolis (YUM), waffles, and pancakes. I have yet to try these treats, but if I have no doubt that I'll be satisfied. Had a gelato here a few times before on the spur of the moment kind of occasion. Tasty, creamy, delicious and from what I can recall definitely well priced. Come to think of it...this was the first ever establishment where I tried the first ever cherry ripe ice cream, and it was just after sushi nearby too. Yummy. I will be back for me, however the rain just has to settle down first. The problem is always in deciding on what type of gelato to choose here. Not the easiest decision to make, so a bit of procrastination in that regard is absolutely a-ok. It will have to be. That saying "ice cream, you scream we all scream for ice cream is so true." This store on the corner of King and Wilsons Streets in Newtown is a little unsuspecting. What may seem like just another gelato shop is actually one of the best gelato stores in the city. Not only does this place do good gelato they also have some great flavours you won't normally find in your typical ice cream store like the chilli chocolate, toffee apple and passionfruit cheese cake. What's even better is that the gelato is home made by a father and son duo, and mum also works in the shop too. All the people who've served me have been real friendly which makes me like the place even more. They also have a loyalty card for gelato and coffee, buy 9 get one free. Super! Just so you know, they also make pancakes, waffles, cannoli, chocolates and coffees here, but the thing you don't want to miss here is definitely the gelato. read more

When 2 scoops is not enough have 3. Don't hold back with this Italian dream ice creamery - the flavours are fantastico. But be prepared to stand in the queue and make like you really want to be served or else you may be overlooked by a more desperate "I need some ice cream.." face next to you. The hardest part about visiting this place is whether to go old favourite, you know what I mean, chocolate, vanilla, strawberry or maybe try something low fat or a flavour you've never imagined like Honey Macadamia. Give in to your childhood urges to have 3 scoops on a cone but make it a special occasion as it's kinda pricy setting you back $8. But you can also buy by the bucket, take home packs are fine as the gelato is made on the premises so it's super fresh. If ice cream has set your sweet tooth on, then you also have the opportunity to grab a hand crafted chocolate. The best bit about this place is it's trading hours, it's never too late for ice cream it closes at 11pm through the week and midnight on the weekends. read more

As the days get warmer and warmer, I find myself craving ice cream. And although my steely self-restraint can get me through the days ice cream free, it's the thought of an after-dinner scoop of velvety, sweet deliciousness that leaves me running to the closest store. At least I'm running, I tell myself. The other night I found myself in Newtown, home to at least three fabulous ice cream parlours. The night was balmy, I'd had a super-healthy bowl of noodle soup for dinner, and so it was natural that my mind began to drift towards a great big dollop of ice cream for dessert. Nestled very close to the station, I was drawn, like a bee to honey, to the icy blue lights and the crowd huddled over the counter of Blue Gelato. A wonderful array of ice creams and sorbets were on offer: Toblerone, Kinder Bueno, passion fruit cheesecake, fig sorbet, coconut sorbet, banana, dulce de leche. It was pleasing to see some more unusual flavours rubbing shoulders with the classics. The staff were friendly, quick to give recommendations and happy to hand out testers to those agonising over flavour choices. It was a tough decision, but I finally decided upon a scoop of Kinder Bueno - its marbled white and brown and generous chunks of actual Kinder Bueno being too hard to resist. It was delicious, but perhaps too sweet (even for my incurable sweet tooth). I'm glad I tried it, but am not sure I'd choose it again. Luckily, however, this isn't a problem, as there are a whole host of other flavours crying out to be consumed. What's great about this ice cream shop is the upstairs area, decked out with colourful chairs and tables. It's a great place to enjoy your ice cream if, like me, you can't multitask and eat whilst you walk. It also means you can savour the flavour, and perhaps get a second scoop. read more

"This evening I walked past gelato blue in newtown and was struck to see a small gathering of people around a dog tied up to the street post outside. One man had said the dog had been there for hours. There was no water bowl, and the dog was shaking. We tried calling the owner, but there was no answer. After asking the staff about the whereabouts of the owner, they revealed that it was the gelato blue owner's dog - they said the dog was "there all the time" and "used to it". If this is the way that a dog is treated "all the time", then the owner should try being tied to a lamp post at a busy intersection in the rain. You won't be getting my business, ever." read more
