I often tell friends and neighbors: if the way that the owners of this studio speak to my child becomes the way that my child speaks to himself in his mind, I will be the luckiest parent in the world. This studio teaches the perfect combination of grit/resilience, self-respect, and growth mindset. Kids do hard things here and try hard because they are encouraged and supported. Since starting at this studio I have seen a tangible difference in my child's resilience, confidence, self-control, physical sense of balance, and overall physical strength, and school teachers noticed, too. The class lengths are the perfect amount of physical activity and focus for after school, the schedule is flexible, the price point is a steal, and I can even walk down to Kroger to grab milk while my kiddo is here. We have looked all over for a martial arts studio for our children, but have been disappointed with all of them, except Geist Martial Arts! No contracts, unlimited classes, no hidden fees, rates for the average family! This is what we were needing for our kids to have an activity all year around, allowing achievements, self confidence growth and socialization! The family owned practice is accommodating and even helped us out when our payroll had an issue- pushing our billing back a week. If you're looking for karate for your kids without breaking the bank while building growth in your children's lifestyle, look no further!!! This is the spot! read more

Misters Byrd and Hayward are kind and patient with the kids, as are all of the student instructors. The class times are convenient, just have your head right for the chaos that ensues during the turnover. It's a great family owned business. Traditional school sports were a logistical challenge for us due to their fixed practice and game schedules. Therefore, in an effort to arrange a means of exercise, and ideally build confidence and discipline for my family, we sought out Geist Martial Arts (GMA) after having heard very positive parental feedback about them including the flexible GMA class schedule. It enabled us to "hit n miss" practice in conjunction with our two jobs and various kids spread across three school systems. Since then we have spent the past few years training under the instruction of Mr. Byrd (7th degree BB) and Mrs. Byrd (4th degree BB) as well as their multi-talented Black Belt students whom were trained there. During our time spent at GMA we witnessed the physical, mental and confidence growth in our kids. Beyond the expected improvement in their self-defensive capabilities, they learned persistence and good sportsmanship as they pushed thru the bumps and bruises of practice and testing, all in preparation for more of the same in real life. GMA is located In a highly "transient work" area where families frequently come and go as their work transfers occur. Hence, being able to pursue TKO training and having to commit to a binding contract can be a deal breaker. Therefore, we were pleased GMA did not require locking into a multiyear contract. Additionally, we found the cost of (training and testing) at GMA to be more attractive than some of the other TKO options in the area. We especially liked the multi family member price break that is offered. So for those that are contemplating TKO as means of fitness, the aforementioned are some of the questions to be sure and ask as you embark upon this exciting multi-faceted sport. Established in 2009.

We are husband and wife owned and operated. Mr. and Mrs Byrd are still here teaching everyday as our martial arts family has grown. We have been teaching here on the Northeast side since 1997.

We hope to benefit individuals and families by developing character, and strengthening both mind and body through the practice of martial arts. After teaching with our friends in Fishers since the mid 90's we felt led to open our own school in 2009 near where Mrs. Byrd grew up. We hope to serve others to the best of our ability. I can't say enough good things about Celeste (or Isabelle, her real name). She's very approachable, funny, a good teacher and has an adorable French Canadian accent. A six-week course costs $60, meaning that each hour-long lesson is only $10. Worth every penny, I tell you! If you've ever been remotely interested in bellydancing, I highly recommend studying here with Celeste. The facility also is home to, as the name would suggest, Aikido and T'ai Chi classes, as well as some other dance classes. It's in a fairly convenient location right off of Binford Boulevard.

I was repeatedly told "you're on contract" "If your child gets sick we will take a note from the doctor" so our children have to get Covid-19 before they will take it serious. I am not so sure that I want to send my son to a place that does not have his health and safety as a top priority. I asked what happens when we die then who's paying this contract? I also asked to speak with the owner of the company, at first told there was no way I could. Then was told to call back tomorrow. Adults are one thing OUR CHILDREN are different. We are to do our best to protect them and this should be a place that is on the same page! The schools close but this place knows more than the whole district? They should be respectful of the sensitivity of this situation and have a plan! They should want all the kids to return without getting sick not wait and see.

However, I experienced a breakdown on their end immediately. The private lesson that I was given as my first free lesson was very encouraging. I was excited about losing that extra 20 pounds and was preyed upon by these sales people. Immediately following this lesson I was put in a sales office with the owner. He told me FOR THE FIRST TIME that this lesson wasn't really free. Keep in mind that I was already done with the lesson at this point. The deal was that if I didn't sign up for their high pressure legally contracted lesson plan that I NOW HAD YO PAY OVER $100 FOR MY "FREE" LESSON! I was uncomfortable with their sales approach of essentially tricking people in to signing up or paying for that lesson... but they got me... I signed on the dotted line. In this meeting I was promised over $500 worth of equipment included as part of what I signed up for... I received a T-shirt... which they asked me to pay for at first and then was told that I needed to spend literally hundreds of more dollars on essential equipment that came from them. I was ignored and taken away from the group when I mentioned that "I signed up for the package where my equipment was included." The instructor tried to separate me and give me a pair of gloves to "shut me up." The reason I wrote this review is because of one thing. I was paying them over $150 per month to work out there. I told them that I did not feel I was given what was promised and the classes are NOTHING like your "free" private lesson on the first day. I had paid on time in full for 4 months and sent them an email. I asked about terminating my contract because I didn't feel they were holding up their end and requested to sit down with them. Immediately I was met with a legal letter telling me that I was lazy and wanted out because I'm of low moral character. The letter went on to say that they were threatening legal action. I was blown away, I asked for a meeting to discuss something and had never missed a payment and that's what I got. This business clearly wasn't for me and I should have never signed up for something I was this uncomfortable with, but I was motivated by trying to improve my body. All I will say is please don't sign anything until you have went to a few of the regular scheduled classes and have 100% of the information about what they will expect you to purchase from them once you are a member. Don't let your feelings about your body cloud your judgment about this business. I would recommend declining the "free" lesson and paying for a few GROUP sessions before ever signing anything. I was trapped by a contract to workout somewhere that I was uncomfortable with taught by people who I was very uncomfortable with.

Geist Martial Arts has been a game-changer for our son. Before joining, he struggled socially--he was being bullied, had a hard time making friends, and the few friends he did have often took advantage of him. He felt unsure of himself and didn't know how to speak up. Since starting at Geist Martial Arts, we've seen a complete transformation. He's learned real coping strategies, how to stand up for himself, and that his strongest weapon is his voice--using it confidently and respectfully to advocate for himself. His posture has improved, he's physically stronger, and most importantly, he finally believes in himself. Geist Martial Arts didn't just teach our son karate--they helped him discover his confidence, his strength, and his voice. We couldn't recommend them more. And here's a bonus for the parents: Mr. Byrd adds just enough nostalgic humor to keep things fun for everyone--but it especially speaks to Gen-X warrior parents who grew up on Saturday morning cartoons and The Karate Kid. My kids have gained so much from Geist Martial Arts in terms of confidence, self-control, and respect for others, not to mention all the cool taekwondo kicks and forms. Mr. Byrd (and the whole Byrd family!) is wonderful with children of all ages. He and the other instructors seamlessly switch tack as the situation demands. They keep the younger students engaged with humor, and they challenge them to be better at whatever they are doing. Our 9-year-old started when he was 7, and now our 5-year-old goes too because there is an awesomely attractive family discount! I'm so glad we found this school since other local schools are more expensive and have rigidly unfavorable contract terms. Geist Martial Arts does not have fixed contracts and you can pay month to month if you want. Nothing but good stuff to say about Geist Martial Arts! read more

We absolutely love this place! I had taken the kids to another Martial Arts gym but it ended up being way too expensive for us. I was completely devastated and I remember calling Geist Martial Arts nearly in tears asking about their rates. They not only comforted me but have VERY affordable rates to where all four of our kids could attend. Once we started, they really worked with my kids (a couple were really nervous) and are always so patient with them! Mr. Byrd is absolutely hilarious and all of the instructors are so kind and helpful! This is such a fun and comfortable environment. I HIGHLY recommend!! read more

If you are a parent of kids and want them to learn martial arts, look no further than this location. The owners are fantastic at keeping young children focused in a fun and friendly way. They take their craft (but not themselves) seriously. It is a fun environment! If you are an adult looking for fitness or self-defense, it is a tough workout that you will appreciate completing. My kids have been taking classes at Geist Martial Arts for over seven years. Mr. and Mrs. Byrd are not just Tae Kwon Do instructors, they are mentors. They have taught my kids how to practice martial arts (and kept them in shape), but also taught them self-control, perseverance, and good sportsmanship. The GMA community is like a second family. This is a great place to bring all my kids. The Byrds are so welcoming, after just one visit Mr. Byrd remembered all 4 of my kids names.
