Great ambiance in the oldest barn in Iowa. Luxembourg village. Animals and people shared the barn originally. Great local beer and fabulous location. Great meals at Kalmes restaurant across the highway. Must visit in Eastern Iowa. Owners provide great service and answer all questions. 5 stars!

The Gehlen Barn is located just outside Dubuque in St. Donatus. The beautifully restored barn is nothing short of amazing. The exterior and interior have been exceptionally well restored. There are multiple levels to the barn with plentiful seating. The bar is on the second floor. The service was terrific and a great beer selection. There is also an outdoor seating area. We very much enjoyed our visit and well worth the drive.

This was a unique experience. Great beer in the oldest barn in Iowa. Whenever I'm staying at One Orange Centre, I'm definitely coming here again, likely every night. The service is excellent and you cannot go wrong with the wide assortment of beers and beverages on tap or otherwise. I loved the Breaking Curfew IPA the best.

This is a must stop for craft beer, and more.

A very nice craft brew and more bar. Located in a very quaint town, called St. Donatus, IA. The beer is great. The renovations are beautiful. Currently they are not crafting their own but will eventually.

We were traveling home from Galena and happened to see a sign by the road that read "Beer in the Barn ." So we did what any true-blooded mid-westerner would do & followed the arrow to the bar in search of beer! The barn boasts being the oldest barn in IA and I wouldn't doubt that it is. It's a beautiful old limestone barn that has been shored-up and converted to a barn-bar while maintaining its historical roots. The owners were on-site and extremely friendly and welcoming, sharing with us their story of how they came to be the caretakers of the Gehlen barn. While they do sell some off-site brand craft beers, they also have their own distillery on site and brew their own "Beer in the Barn" brand. We thoroughly enjoyed our drinks while listening to the live music as the thunder rolled and the lightening flashes through the ventilation windows in the barn. This is a definite stop and a hidden gem if you're ever in the area!

The choice of music could improve, and if it wasn't so loud. You could hear so awful person singing from 2 blocks away.

Based on our visit here earlier today we can atest to the fact that these folks received a very…read morewell deserved award for the Best Burger in Iowa 2026! All three of us (the Mrs, my Aunt, and myself) ordered the Biertgarten Smashburgers and we split an order of the Cheese Curds. The burgers were two 4oz chuck/brisket patties, fried onion, American cheese, lettuce, pickles, and Smash Sauce served on a toasted brioche bun and is FANTASTIC! Have plenty of napkins at your disposal as the flavor oozes from this burger! The hand-cut fries are a great side and very good too (I had to add some salt to put them over the top)...the Cheese Curds made it a trifecta...they were outstanding as well, crispy coating and melt in your mouth cheesyness! The servers were very helpful and ready to help out at a moments notice. Dixie's Biertgarten Smashburger has moved on to my Top 5 Burgers I've Ever Had list... It was around 3 in the afternoon and the place was packed (casual atmosphere and some sports on the big screens) so you may have to wait for a seat...there is some outdoor seating but it was raining today but FYI....it's definitely worth the time so be patient!

Seat yourself, order at the bar and receive a buzzer to pick up food. 2026 best burger in Iowa so we ordered that to share, along with a generous basket of lightly battered and delicious cheese curds. Burger was very shareable and came with fries. Not sure it's the best in the state, but it was very good. Despite being busy, food came out quickly. Great selection of local craft beers on tap. Decorah has amazing beers. Special note that the staff was very friendly. This was a great bar and grill and I can totally see why it was crawling with guests. We will be back when in town again.
