Fair price , good food , friendly Service!…read moreProvides our customers and Community with a smile.

The Butcher Shop is a local gem that I nominate to receive a world heritage site designation. If…read moreyou've read my other reviews, you might note that I have a verifiable "thing" about old-school establishments and The Butcher Shop for me ticks all the old school boxes: glass cases displaying all on offer; butchering table a bit behind glass cases where meats are cut by these Rembrandts of protein; and succulent meats. Proper butchers greet you upon entering this Wisconsin shrine to meat and prepare to magnificent perfection the exact cut of meat you order. On this my first trip and after recovering my senses having been wowed by this little shop hidden in the woods, my particular friend and brother Bunky and I ordered porterhouse steaks (1 1/2" thick), 1"-thick boneless ribeye for the kids and for another day 1 1/2" center loin, boneless pork chops, and strips of double smoked bacon for the rotkohl to be served with pork chops. All meats will of course be grilled, steaks for 7 minutes on each side to yield charred, medium rare steaks. Oh, let me not forget to mention the smoked salmon that is so tasty and served as our biscuit for making the journey between lake cabin and The Butcher Shop. My particular friend and brother, Bunky enjoys a nearby lakeside cabin and will return as will I when next in Wisconsin. Oh, I will return, I will return and urge all who read this note to beat a direct path to the butcher shop whenever you find yourself in Wisconsin!

One wonderful thing about most Wisconsin gas stations is that among the usual offerings of Redbull…read moreand desiccated hot dogs rolling in place is the abundance of great cheese curds and meat sticks. As we were heading into Northern Wisconsin, I knew the gas stations would not offer such specialties but the more prosaic Slim Jims and mass-produced meat sticks. Not interested. After a disappointing turn in the local gas station in Iron River, I found I had a few bars on my smartphone and immediately looked up the Iron River chamber of commerce. Jim's Meat Market: "Famous for the "Pepper Sticks" this meat market is a must for locals and visitors!" That sounded promising. It was off the main street, but only a half mile away. We drove on a road with minimal signage. There are little signs for Jim's here and there and then suddenly you come across a big building with aluminum siding that looks new and clean. Inside is pretty sparse but Jim and his wife are there to help you out. We got a pack of the cheddar pepper sticks; it was about $7 for a pound! That's an amazing deal since you get like four sticks for $6 bucks in the Twin Cities and our pack had three or four times as many. We also got a pack of pepperjack brats; unlike the regular brats that you can buy by the link, this came in a frozen pack of 7 for about $7. The pepper sticks were delicious; more dry like langjager and very peppery, a little spicy. The texture and taste reminded me a bit of pepperoni, only with chunks of cheese. It was hard to stop eating them. We were camping, so we had to cook all the brats that night. They are loaded with cheese as well and were delicious. I haven't met a brat I don't like. These were harder to cook since they were raw. If we weren't bike camping, it would have made the cooking process easier with more tools on my part. Jim was a little cranky but answered all my questions. Count me a fan.

Locally sourced & made meat products. Excellent service! You can ask them about their products because they make them! Try the Landjager-you won't be disappointed! Pssssst...the secret ingredient for the breakfast sausage is mustard seed. So we had to buy breakfast sausage frozen for our home use!

"We trusted Barney's in Weyerhaeuser, WI with pigs we raised all summer, and that trust was a…read moremistake. The cut sheet and pricing were mishandled from the start. It was not properly filled out when we were there, and after we complained, they sent a cut sheet completed after the fact to match their pricing and make themselves look right. The product quality was unacceptable--tasteless bacon, grey ham, ignored cut instructions, and "flavored" brats with barely any flavor. Others who raised pigs with us were given discounts and even free hams purchased elsewhere to smooth things over, while nothing was done to make things right with us. Instead, they claimed they "checked" their cameras and suggested trying a different brining method next time. There will be no next time. We will not return and strongly advise others to take their business elsewhere."

HOW IS THERE NOT A REVIEW OF THIS AMAZING MEAT MARKET YET????…read moreOkay - for real though, I love Barney's. Weyerhaeuser is a little town in the middle of nowhere, where if you blink you would miss it, but this little gem is tucked safely inside the main town area, right off highway 8. I have been coming to Barney's since I was a kid, and their quality has never wavered in all of my time on this Earth. Beef sticks, fresh jerky, any cut of meat you can think of, specially seasoned steaks, and all at a price that's reasonable. Whenever I cruise through the area, I make it a habit to stop in for some of their BBQ Beef Sticks, they are absolutely TO DIE FOR. Also - shout out to Barney's for their slogan: "nobody beats our meat." They have shirts for sale, and that alone warrants a trip!
