Got it back after a few short days and will be getting some further work done as time goes on. This truck had belonged to my former landlord whereupon his daughter sold it to me as the old boy had gone to a retirement facility. In his later years maintenance and repairs had been let go but being sturdy and strong running, I bought it and am slowly bringing it up to snuff and it is good in the event I should need to do any long distance traveling with it. . Attended the new shop opening, located just off I-25 and Colorado route 66, where I met Mr. Maggio's family and some of the other customers who call Hands On Autotech their home for vehicle repair and servicing. I first went there based on the recommendation of the Martino troubleshooter show on 630 KHOW AM radio; 10 AM - 2PM, M-F. My opinion is that Tom's shop takes something of a scientific approach to vehicle repair and will go more in depth with an analyses than another shop I had been to for an issue with my '99 Tahoe. As an EV owner himself I gather that Tom is up on the current tech, perhaps more than some other places who would have men of my age (68) from the "dinosaur era" of automotive tech working at their shops.

There was a problem with the communication surrounding the tow transfer so I started my experience with Hands on Auto Tech with some trepidation. Tom handled the situation and we moved onto the real problem with my truck. The diagnosis was the clutch so I approved the repair and waited a few days for the parts to arrive and the repair to proceed. After the clutch was replaced another problem with the operation of the clutch was discovered so I agreed to the additional repair and another day for repair. After a week I was reunited with my truck. The repair was costly, lengthy and unexpected but coming out the other side of this experience I learned a couple of lessons. 1. If you have your vehicle towed to a shop follow the tow truck to the shop and verify the transfer. 2. Communication and follow up throughout the repair are key Tom was great to deal with and I feel that he was honest with me about the repairs needed and the cost of those repairs. Having recently moved to the area I feel my vehicle maintenance and repair needs can be checked off the list. I can recommend Hands on Auto Tech to anyone needing an honest repair facility and Tom as a good guy to deal with.

But: One time I needed an engine installed, so I got an estimate from Shawn and had him do the job. The final bill was exactly double the estimate! More recently, I needed a VIN verification on a trailer. The office manager took one look at the data plate and refused to verify the VIN (which also had supporting paperwork), insisting that "it's not a VIN" and that I needed to have the highway patrol issue a VIN. This was said with some hostility, as if I was trying to get away with something or make her an accomplice to a crime. So I went across town to Air Care Colorado, which cost me extra time and money, and there they didn't even blink, they just did the verification, and I now have the title to the trailer with the totally-legitimate 6-digit VIN. I should also mention that Proformance giving discounts for 5-star reviews is a violation of Yelp's review policy; it's considered "Compensated Activity".

I have spent MANY thousands of dollars at Scott's trying to fix problems that have cropped up on these cars. While I have great things to say about their customer service, especially the terrific customer service representatives Chrissy and Harper, and about the hard-working technicians, the beautiful shop facility, and the availability of loaner cars (a HUGE perc), I do feel the need to express a couple of concerns that have me questioning whether I will use Scott's again. Scott's is not cheap. Far from it, and I've been repeatedly shocked by the very high estimates I am given. It seems wrong to me that Scott's automatically does a full examination of a customer's vehicle, to identify all problems/possible mecanical problems and they typically prepare a clear and detailed report with photos and recommendations, even when one brings a vehicle in simply to fix a very specific problem. I wouldn't mind if Scott's did a complete examination for free, or offered it as as an extra diagnostic service that the customer can request. BTW, I do realize that a whole car exam takes time and expertise. It also seems like it's a great way for Scott's to get more business/income by looking for and finding problems. I've also taken in my car to have something fixed, and even though to my frustration they could not figure out the cause, I ended up paying close to 2K to repair other things they found (that I grugingly agreed to have them fix). So I ended up 2K poorer and with the same problem - a recurring loud buzzing sound behind the dashboard. Finally, I have to mention one other thing - I needed my old car's foggy headlights restored, and Scott's said they's do it for $150 or $160. A simple Google search confirmed what I thought - anyone can fix the problem quickly by hand polishing the headlight lenses with a rubbing compound and a foam or microfiber cloth; this easily restores their clarity. It costs very little to buy a bottle of rubbing compound and do it yourself. So my question is - why doesn't Scott's staff, who know about the easy DIY fix, tell customers about it and give them the choice to save a little money? I'm sure that it takes a technician much less than an hour to polish two headlights, and it seems they charge two man hours to do the work. Being open and showing customers that you are not trying to exploit them would have a HUGE impact on people's trust in your company. Scott's charges top dollar, and generally does good work, but I feel very exploited (and have felt that way before) by the things I described above.

We were told the transmission was fine. We took it to another shop where we discovered the transmission was shot. When we approached to owner we were dismissed and no consideration as a customer at all. No working with us at all. I would not recommend this shop to anyone.
