Walking in off the street we met Siobhan going back up to the restaurant from the bar with a drinks…read moreorder. With a welcoming smile she said "follow me" and we did. The décor is great. Modern and pleasant. Fabulously magnificent light shades that my partner somehow initially missed! Down to business. We went for the Chefs menu, which was excellent value at 24.95 EUR for three courses. Two courses was 20.95 EUR. To start I went for the Smoked Salmon & Pate, my partner the Ham Hock Terrine. Delicious, both delicious. The salmon especially. Plenty of smoked salmon that was just melt in the mouth. For mains I went for the Slow Roast Pork Belly, my partner the Caribbean Chicken Fricassee. The pork had lots and lots of meat and was cooked perfectly. The accompanying vegetables and jus worked very very well. My partner was really really pleased with his main course. He was still talking about it a few days later. I am sure he will describe it adequately in his review. For wine we picked Old Coach Road, a 2012 Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, 32 EUR. This worked wonderfully with my meal. We shared a dessert, which you pick from the A la carte menu, even though it part of the Chef menu deal. We picked the Chocolate Brown. Sweet mother divine, so so good. Each dish was presented immaculately. The service was excellent. Siobhan and co were very attentive and friendly to boot. We had a nice albeit brief chat with Siobhan at the end. Brennan's Lane is fantastic. And for 24.95 EUR, excellent value. It was the best meal of our whole week long trip a long the west coast. We are very grateful to Dolores at the Red River Lodge B&B for recommending it to us.

I've been in Ireland for 18 months now and been visiting for 5 years…read more I can honestly say this was the best 3 courses of food I have had since I have been here, all for the early bird price of 24 euro. For starters I had a duck terrine with a plum pickle. It was very nice, with a few pieces of bread it also had another pickle which I cant remember what it was but it was also nice! For my main course I had a Caribbean Chicken Curry with Jasmine rice, I love Caribbean food and this was truly lovely. The chicken was so moist and delicious I have never had its like before. For desert I had a chocolate brownie with a toffee sauce and homemade ice cream a sugar twirl and biscuit crumbs. It was amazing. The food was also substantial which is very unusal, but very welcome. The restaurant was really nice but you do need to go upstairs through a bar which can be busy. But don't let it put you off. The decor upstairs is great and the staff are really really nice. All in all this is the first review for 5 stars which I wish there was a way of putting an extra star or exclamation mark on the review. If you are near here take a trip. Its awesome. My partner also fully enjoyed the evening but I honestly was so engrossed in my own food I cant even remember what she had!

THE BROKEN JUG…read more "Situated in the heart of Ballina this extensive pub is really warm, welcoming and cosy. Providing the very best in food and drink, their carvery lunches are superb. A haven for the tourist or the weary shopper the Broken Jug is also very popular with the younger age group. The friendly and efficient staff will make your visit here truly memorable." The opening paragraph comes courtesy of the Broken Jug itself, a pub cum eatery in the Co. Mayo town. It is warm and friendly but the bare timber furniture and backless seating is more for the "younger age group"! The restaurant section is a shade more comfortable and the food is very good, the service friendly and efficient and the prices reasonable. The other night, I started with a magnificent chowder, very very tasty (indeed one of the best I've come across) and not suffocated with cream as happened in a Cork venue recently. Main course was a lasagne. It was almost top class, and would have been but for it being a little overdone in the heating which made some of the edges too hard. Overall though - the cheese and mincemeat were excellent - it was a fine dish, served with chips and an undressed well mixed salad. Dessert, there were about five choices, was homemade apple tart with cream and, yes, the apple was real chunky stuff, just the way I like it. I have given it four stars but three and half would be more like it - if you're over forty! For more on Mayo trip see: http://swissroll07.blogspot.com/

Carvery directly in front of you with a typed menu on display is you can't make out what's on offer. Have always had tasty food there and good mash. This is, by far, one of the best places to eat in town. Also recognised as one of the top spots in…read morethe country, presumably for their use of locally sourced meat and ingredients. They believe in supporting the community that supports them, which is great. On our first day in Ballina, we asked reception where a good place for lunch or dinner would be and this place, along with their fine dining upstairs, Heifer and Hen, got glowing reviews. We checked it out and saw a list of pastas and sandwiches, so kept going in search of 'traditional Irish fare'. Upon closer inspection, the full sit down menu offered things like Cumberland sausages, bangers and mash and more. So breakfast it was. You can't go wrong with freshly baked goods, a local butcher for tasty sausages and bacon and locally sourced ingredients. The toast was almost like a cake, very tasty, a little sweet and quite dense. Service was fast, friendly and accommodating and the coffee was good too. Only complaint is that the glasses and cutlery could be a little cleaner. All in all, if you're in Ballina, avoid disappointment and come here first. We're heading back for lunch!

In particular, the bolognese is one of the best I've ever had. Probably had it about 6-7 times. Then I tried the lasagna at the suggestion of Vladimir since they use the bolognese in it and it was a great choice! Hope to make it back one day!

After discovering that the Ice House restaurant was all booked up, we walked down the river road to…read moreget to Crockett's. It's what I tend do think of when I think of an Irish pub -- dark wood, etc. We ended up being seated in a room away from the bar, which was fine, but it was also in a room that was playing some...out of context music. For example, hearing 50 Cent's "In da Club" was not expected. Perhaps it was really "In da Pub." Food was good - not exceptional, but good. My seafood chowder was a nice medium broth with mostly fish, but good sea food flavor, and seemed thickened with potato for accuracy. Served with some super dense brown bread which was great dipped in the soup. Fish and chips were a very generous cod fillet in nice crispy batter. The fish was tasty, well cooked, and the batter wasn't too greasy or soggy. Chips were good, but didn't have much of any flavor. Maybe not the best potatoes? Others commented that their salmon was...OK. Fried brie (what could possibly be wrong with that) was reported as excellent, as was a special Cajun chicken terrine starter. Service was a little slow, but we weren't in a hurry. I don't know how to adjust my service expectations for here vs. the US, but it sounds like it's just a slower pace, and that's fine. They were just starting trivia (the pen and paper kind, too, none of this automated electronic scoring stuff) when we left about 10pm, but we left as we figured it might be over the heads of two Americans, a German, a Dane, and an Englishman. Would I come back? Yes. There are other good looking things on the menu to try, but there are also some other spots in town I'll probably try first. But certainly nothing bad here.
