Let's start with the great and work our way down. First, the food is phenomenal, like really really good, I had an amazing dish, not even sure what it was called and a sweet naan bread both were to die for. My wife had the most creamy curry I have ever had and it was full of flavor. In the middle of the road side was the service, it wasn't bad, it wasn't great. The guy seemed bored at his job, but I get it we were there pretty late in the evening, no harm done. On the bad side is the decor. This place seriously needs a renovation. It feels very stereotypical, and also a little grungy. I would just recommend a spruce up to make the place feel like it wasn't a caricature of Indian culture Still, will definitely be back, I understand they do a weekday buffet and I would love to do that!

The food was all very tasty and the service was wonderful. They're very nice people. They recently spruced up the place too with new booths and paint. We'll definitely return.

Gateway to India is one of our reoccurring Tacoma favorites! The atmosphere is spacious and welcoming. We always get seated right away, and the service is prompt. The portions are generous, and SO flavorful. We love the curries and the garlic naan, and always enjoy the way they present and house the curries. In a stylish brass bowl with a tea light underneath to keep it hot. They keep the water coming, and we always leave with happy bellies. We can't wait to come back.

There are a few Indian restaurants in the Tacoma area, and I wanted to try something new. Those plans fell through and I came to Gateway To india, again. I was disappointed to see that my previous pictures that I've taken over 9 years weren't showing anymore on the app. The restaurant was completely full and I had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. I ordered the vegetable pakoras and wasn't happy with them. They were mostly batter instead of vegetables. The veg korma that I ordered didn't have the cream base in it that I'm used to... and needed salt. Maybe they were trying to make it a vegan dish. The server that was assigned to my table was very kind and helpful. It would have been nice to have some music playing for the atmosphere since it is an ethnic restaurant. The best part of my dinner tonight was chatting with my server.

I moved away several years ago and every time I'm in town I make an effort to get food here if I can, or at least take out from here. I've never had Indian food as good as this place. Their masala sauce is incredible and I've never had paneer pakora at another restaurant that I've liked, highly recommend it from here. Their basmati rice is also super good and really everything I've had here has been good. It's decent inside, nothing fancy but some cool cultural art fixtures and murals, and the servers are really friendly!

Excellent food and friendly service. Had been a few years since last visited. A great time all around, as was all in the past.

At first, we thought the place would be great. But we went in and got seated, the front lady was a bit rude... Ordered food and it was great presentation and looked delicious, but the portions were very small. Throughout the whole time, no waters were refilled, no service to tend to you. At the end once we were done eating we checked out waters, and there were mini fruit flies in my partner's cup. Then in mine, the cups weren't completely washed. There were particles of film and old food in my water...

Great customer service and the Food is amazing. The at home vibe provided a delightful lunch experience.

Wow wow wow. I had never been to an Indian restaurant before (I've had Indian food, just never in a sit-down setting). The food was amazing and full of flavor! Our server was Samantha and she was so kind, patient, helpful, and amazing! Our group was all relatively new to Indian cuisine, so she guided us a little bit. I want to keep coming back here to try all the menu items! There is also a lunch buffet that I want to go to as well (which was recommended by the staff)! Also, the location is right in the middle of 6th Ave so it's a great place to grab dinner then go bar hopping right after!

We've been going here for years. By far the best Indian food in the Pacific Northwest. Their service is always delightfully friendly.

Is it air-conditioned?

I'm not positive, but I believe that it is air-conditioned. I know only that I have never been either too warm or too cold there, so they seem to have some type of temperature-regulating system.

Our waitress was helpful when it came to explaining items we had questions for. And don't get me started ex on the food. This menu rotates as the seasons change but when I say the meals from this menu were full of flavor explosions like you have never witnessed before. I got the red snapper which I've always wanted to try and it was everything I expected it to be.. wish it was in the menu permanently. Hoping it comes back! This menu was careful curated and you can tell these guys love what they do. New favorite

Parking is tough but the parking in front of the bank next to Asado's is a $5 fee and a short walk away. It was buzzing as soon as we walked in. The seating is one where you are seated close, next to others. Family style. Helps with meeting new people. They are the bar height tables which I'm not a fan of because I'm short. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Once the food came out, we were ready. We had the coconut greens. They were tender and flavorful it was different from what I'm familiar to but delicious nonetheless. Next were the green bean pakoras. I loved it. My only thing is that there was so much batter it almost overtook the beans. The beef kabobs were DELISH, tender and flavorful. For entrees, we decided to share because that was a lot of food. Lamb chops was the entree of choice. It came with cheesy grits. The grits were a bit watery for me but the flavors were amazing. I love their seasonal menus they come out with. Gives me a reason to come back. It was a great pre funk to our comedy date night. We shall return. Thank you Grann restaurant (Jacob and Denzel)

The portions have gotten smaller while the prices have gone up, the lamb is very tough and fatty and no longer tender, and the spice level is not what it used to be. I used to order a spice level 5 and barely be able to eat it, now I order a 7 and almost asked for hot sauce on the side because it tasted like a 1. I love the chicken 65 but it is now less than half of what I used to receive. The server was nice but walked away mid order to answer the phone, it just felt off. The restaurant is clean. In today's economy there's just not enough value for me and I won't be visiting much anymore.

The restaurant itself is on the smaller side, and I noticed a lot of people were ordering takeout online while we were there. Food Portion sizes were fair for the price, and they offer many vegetarian and vegan options. Highly recommend getting the garlic naan with any dish. Foods tried: Garlic naan - Hot and fresh, slightly crispy with a nice savory flavor. Samosa appetizers - Comes with two, but they are pretty large and very filling. Chicken tikka masala - Served in a deceptively large portion and very savory. Lamb biryani - Kind of like their version of fried rice, served with a mild yogurt sauce on the side. Service Servers were friendly. The only downside was that the food took a little while to come out, but the wait was worth it. Overall I've been here twice already and will definitely be back again. The food I've tried so far gives me confidence that you can't really go wrong ordering anything off the menu.

I am no expert to Indian food as my experience has primarily been through:…read more- Intel/MSFT cafes with an Indian option (which are pretty good IMO) - Event catering by the local Indian restaurant - Cooking vegan Indian cuisine from Rainbow Plant Life on YouTube Occasionally I will go out for Indian food but ultimately I am hesitant due to my Indian colleagues always telling me "they can make it at home better". As someone who does not have access to an auntie, I cannot claim "authenticity" ... but I can claim Butter Chicken Indian Kitchen serves GOOD food, especially for Gig Harbor. LOGISTICS / AMBIANCE Located next to the Harbor Museum, there is some parking at the very front of the restaurant but I imagine it's OK to overflow into the museum parking, especially when it's closed (that's what we did). I suppose this place qualifies as a "hole in the wall" - it's easy to miss off the main road due it being in a smaller building (think like a gas station convenience store). We were able to get a seat for 3 on a rainy Friday night, but I would call ahead for larger groups of 5+ to check seating availability. Despite the small building, it felt cozy without being cramped. They have an extensive menu so I would take time to look through it while you wait for a seat, but the staff are friendly if you have any questions about unfamiliar items. Sure the lighting isn't flattering... but there's a certain "hole-in-the-wall" charm to the place, from the lanterns on the tables to the smell of curry wetting your appetite. FOOD Unfortunately we were with someone sensitive to spicy food and we wanted to share dishes... so my partner and I had to lower the spice level on our dishes. Unfortunately the 2-3 range was pretty mild for our dishes. Though tasty, I would have liked a little more heat so something to keep in mind. Since we had ordered two saucy dishes, we got two servings of basmati rice in a "handi" ( the copper pot) that kept the rice warm. The basmati rice on its own was very good and fragrant; I even found a cinnamon stick in one of the pots! It went really well with two curries. Fish Korma (lvl 3 spice): Of the two curry-esque dishes I tried, this was my favorite. The creamy sauce was super flavorful with a harmonious blend of spices, super tasty on rice or with any of the provided condiments. I seldom see fish as an option but this was a surprisingly great combination. Tandoori Chicken (lvl 2 spice): This was our favorite dish of the night - it may sound basic (you see tandoori chicken at a lot of places) but it was REALLY good. I liked how the chicken was really juicy and had a nice smokey flavor and char from how it was grilled/serves. The hot plate was a nice touch to keep it warm as well! Definitely squeeze a little bit of the lemon to give it refreshing acidity while eating it warm. I do wish we went higher on the spice rating here since it could have benefited from having more kick, but it was still delicious! Dal Makhani (lvl 3 spice): This was our least favorite, but I had some bias since I was expecting this dish to be something else I had before (need to research more about the variations). I was expecting it to be more creamy with flavor, but it felt a lot more like a tomato-forward channa masala w/ lentils. Still delicious, but not what I was expecting. This also felt a little more spicy than the Fish Korma despite having the same spice level. Garlic Naan (1 piece): Always a must have w/ Indian food! I like eating it with the curries and adding on the complimentary chutneys. The perfect side carb (after basmati rice) for the sauces! Strawberry Lassi: This was was a complimentary surprise, as I think the owner/manager came by and provided them at the end of the meal. They were delicious and a great way to end the meal with a sweet treat! Plus the yogurt helps with digestion or appease any lingering spice effects on the tongue. OVERALL Honestly this place exceeded our expectations - pricing may seem a little high but they're actually on-par with other Indian places I've been to in Seattle and the Bay Area. The portions here are generous especially with the rice - so plan on taking home leftovers! We couldn't finish everything between 3 people and we were starving when we arrived. As a former Gig Harbor residence... I remember a time when this was a little restaurant ran by a sweet Australian couple and a killer cocktail menu. That was years ago, but I'm glad another diverse restaurant option has taken up this space in a town with little variety. The service nice and I could definitely see myself checking out this place again when I'm in the area. All in all, if you're feeling adventurous and want to try something different but delicious... check out Butter Chicken Indian Kitchen!

Which is probably why everything looks curry like but nothing tastes like authentic Indian food. It's a no for me. If you want traditional Indian food, this will disappoint you. The staff here is non Indian , is almost mechanical, and regurgitate learned information about the menu, they don't ask you what you want to drink , they are just marching around cleaning but no effort of being personable.
