Has been under new ownership for the past 13 years or so. I love vegetarian dishes but am not a vegetarian. Food is solidly flavorful. I ordered all "American mild" as others in my party can't eat spicy food. The only thing they thought was too spicy was the vegetable samosas which was a 3/10 to me. Each dish was great. Generous portions. You will walk away with leftovers as you will be stuffed. The restaurant has been a Springfield fixture for a while. It could use a little updating of the drink menu, labeling of the menu for those with sensitivity/allergy, and some space updating. Give this awesome place a try. read more

I don't live locally, but I have been coming here on and off for 10+ years when I'm in town. I know it's had it's ups and downs. But we ate dinner here again tonight and they are definitely on a roll again. The food was so good! Husband had lamb rogan josh. Lamb is always a gamble (see what I did there? ) but this was tender and very flavorful with a little citrus tang in the sauce. I had a green shrimp masala, which was something new to me, but we both loved it. They have aloo papri chat, which is one of my favorites. And the carrot pudding is to die for. Everything was served piping hot and cooked to the requested spice level. Terrific meal. Highly recommend, and we will be back again! read more

We always love coming to Gateway To India and are so glad they've been able to stay open for carry out during the pandemic. We ordered through YELP this eve and it worked like a charm! We've never had anything we didn't like here. Tonight we enjoyed some favorites, Keema Muttar (med spicy,) chicken tiki masala (mild plus,) and vegetable korma (mild plus).... plus a side of naan, of course! All delicious! (Oh, and we love their rice, too!). Again, we like everything we've had here, both from the menu, and on their lunch buffet when it was open. I really love the food here. It's a shame the place looks so strange from the outside. It was a Chinese restaurant years ago, and they never updated the outside. However, don't let the outer appearance, or the location, fool you. It looks very nice inside. The food is delicious, and I've read from some about over pricing and small portions. This place does not look like much on the outside but inside - fantastic food. My wife and I went on a recommendation and found a gem. Authentic Indian food in an unlikely location - We had a few people with us and we shared all the following dishes - Veg Samosa, Garlic Naan, Tikka Masala, Lamb and Chicken Vindaloo, Chicken Biryani and Tandori Mixed Grill of fish, chicken, lamb sausage, shrimp and vegies - every dish was distinctly different and outstanding. My favorite was the Chicken Vindaloo ordered spicy - it is addictive. Again the outside is nothing to look at but the the inside is very clean, very friendly staff (mostly family I believe) and the food is off the hook. Awesome. read more

This place was empty at 6 pm on a weekday. The menu is extensive, which is a bad sign since they cannot possibly make 100+ dishes to order, fresh. I ordered the veggie combo appetizer which was super-oily, disgusting. I could eat 1-2 pieces at most. The chicken Korma tasted nice, ordered medium spicy. The rice was cooked very well. The Naan was buttered(margarined?) heavily. I got sick the next morning but was able to go to work. I don't think it was food poisoning, just too much oil and margarine. read more

We have friends in Springfield that we visit from time to time. For years I dreaded the inevitable question: where do you want to go to eat, because, well, exotic options are rare in Springfield. Until this place opened up the only place to get unusual fare was the jerusalem cafe. The food is so good at Gateway to India that I wish they'd move up here to the Chicago area. We went there for dinner with friends when we were asked by the state to reenact for the Presidential Library opening (The Library, I believe, has now closed). We feasted like kings (oh how grateful I was to be able to get masala chai that night). We came here for a lunch buffet while traveling to Chicago, overall the food was Average and most of the dishes tasted the same. The food in buffet had chicken biriyani which was a bit soggy, dal fry which didn't felt fresh while most of the other veg dishes lacked flavor. BUT everything related to chaat was actually nice like all the chutneys and chole which made me realize that this place would be better off serving delicious chaat recipes than actual be a full blown Indian restaurant which I think is their strength. This place is great! If you've never had Indian food, go for their lunch buffet, where you can sample a variety of items. Even compared to Indian restaurants in larger cities, Gateway to India offers a number of vegetarian selections on the buffet. Their Mango Lassi is amazing, and you can hardly go wrong with any of the food items on the menu. My recent favorite is the Vegetable Korma, but there are so many good ones! For New Year' Eve 2009-2010, they had a special dinner buffet and open bar for only $25. This had to be the best bargain in town! I will be back next year for sure! p.s. If you go in the winter, the place is a bit drafty with all the windows--bring a sweater if you get cold easily! read more

I have been eating at Gateway To India on and off for many years, and overall my experiences have been positive. First off, as a vegan, one of the most important things for me is to eat at a place that knows what 'vegan' means. A lot of places don't know or care if their food has dairy, eggs, or lard in it. But at Gateway, they're used to dealing with vegetarian and vegan customers, so you can just ask which items are vegan on the buffet (or an item you want on the menu), and they will think for a second and tell you. The naan isn't vegan, which is sad, but there are many other options and the lunch buffet has at least 3-4 (they switch up what items they have out daily), usually more. I haven't had a lot of experience eating at indian restaurants so I can't say if the food is better or worse than what you'd find in a bigger city, but I like it and I also like that the buffet items aren't super spicy, i've been to a place where they purposely make the buffet items pretty hot so you won't eat as much. As for the price, it depends on what you order. I think right now the lunch buffet is $9, and I can certainly eat $9 worth of buffet. Obviously the meatless dinner options are slightly cheaper than their meaty counterparts, but it's easily possible for two adults to get out of there for under $30. read more

I just had dinner at Gateway to India, and I am now compelled to write a review. After going to Gateway to India a few times, I noticed that they consistently ask for my pin number because "my credit card" would not take. A couple of visits ago, someone literally looked at my fingers entering the pin numbers, and tonight, they asked me for the pin so that they could enter the pin number themselves. After leaving the restaurant, I changed the pin number. I think it is common sense to allow the customer to enter the pin number by themselves without having having someone look over their shoulder. I use a credit card and at a fundamental level, I still fail to see why I need to enter a pin number. I'm just posting this just in case, it's happened to you. Also, the mango ice cream dessert was presented in a small plastic container in about a ketchup shaped container, and their tikka chicken was very dry and may have been leftovers from lunch. I will never go back to this restaurant. read more

This is by far, the best Indian food I've ever had. It's flavorful, authentic, and fairly priced. At least the buffet lunch is fairly priced. The dinners can get very pricey very quickly The Naan here is not bad at all. It can be a little burnt at times, but it goes really well with all the dishes I've had. The Chicken Tikki Masala is the best item on the menu. The atmosphere has excellent decor although the location as a whole feels dirty. The staff is excellent. Very kind and attentive. While staying in Springfield for a business trip the last few weeks I had the pleasure of eating at Gateway to India. It was delicious. I had little hope for a good Indian restaurant in a town I was unfamiliar with but I was amazed at how good it was. I had the vegetable samosas, chicken tikka masala and plain naan. The samosas were crispy on the outside and soft and flavorful on the inside, and the chutney that accompanied it was the perfect combination of sweet and savory. The chicken tikka masala was excellent, just the right amount of heat (enough to get my brow sweaty, but they will make it as spicy or mild as you request), the sauce was creamy and the portions were plentiful. I have a big appetite and almost couldn't finish it all. The naan was soft and pliable, perfect for picking up chicken chunks and rice. Now that I'm back home in St Louis, I wish I could get some take out from Gateway to India. read more

Ok, much, much better. I'm not one to hold a grudge, and if a place has good things to offer then I'll make sure to point them out. My first visit here was less than stellar. However, (and you'll want to listen very closely to this) my trip here for the lunch buffet was awesome. This place should be like the Brigadoon of restaurants. It should appear magically during the day to serve everyone a delicious and bountiful lunch buffet, but if you come late in the day you'll be trapped... doomed to pay incredibly ridiculous prices for a fraction of the food and no variety. Ok, enough of how I got fleeces for dinner (I just wanted to impress upon you the correct way to enjoy this place). So, the menu items change for the lunch buffet, but they're will be at least one thing you really enjoy, if not two. Lots of sauces, rice, and mountains of naan wait you. Just make sure you leave room for dessert. You can stuff your face until you have labored breathing... and all for the low, low price of $11. Now that's what I'm talking about.
