Gateway Lodge - Hwy B Land O Lakes WI - Historic Wisconsin Northwoods Ambience

Stopped for drinks after touring Bond Falls, it has a spectacular Northwoods ambience - love the atmosphere - make sure you check out the lounge

Checked out this lodge just as a place to sleep for the night during our trip up to Lake Superior, and I was pleased with my experience. It was only $86 for the night, with free coffee in the morning and they would have provided breakfast prior to the pandemic. It's an old lodge that gives off a very vintage vibe, and very clean. No elevators, but we expected that for this type of establishment. When we got up to our room, we were surprised at how immaculately clean the room was. I guess sometimes when you stay in hotels for under $100 you expect it to be pretty bad. But we were impressed. Clean, modern bathrooms. Cabin style decor and furniture that gave it that cozy feel. No central air, but each room has an AC unit, and it worked VERY well. It was different than what we were used to staying in, but we loved it because it was part of the journey to the north woods. I would definitely stay here again if passing through. It's a great spot to lay your head to rest for the night or to stay for a few days even.

Note that they have downtime in the fall so be sure to check their hours in their website. Upon entering the parking lot you feel like you're entering an enchanted forest with lights and an outdoor fire pit greeting you. We were warmly welcomed by the hostess and we were immediately seated. We were out kim an addition which had ample windows facing out to the lighted trees. Our waitress was very attentive and we were started with a relish tray. It was skimpy compared to what you use to get at supper clubs but appreciated as a comp. We received our meals with a comp loaf of bread. I'm GF so passed on the bread. My husband said it was average and appreciated. He had the prim rib and I had a tenderloin steak with mushrooms and garlic mashed potatoes which the first couple of bites in the end was chewy but as I moved to the next bites it was very tender. I enjoyed the Hungarian mushroom soup and my husband enjoyed his clam chowder. We were too full for dessert and I took 1/2 of my meal home to enjoy for lunch the next day. We didn't try any cocktails. We would go back to try more menu items, maybe something light so a dessert could be enjoyed.

But the crab cakes hit it out of the park. The best I have ever had- yes- in the north woods the Crab Cake was the bomb. It was served on a wood plank with a red slightly spicy remoulade sauce. Two lovely thick cakes with lots of sweet crab meat. Made my entire week! I would just order these for dinner and add a salad on the next visit. Hubbie and I had the tenderloin infused with the garlic. So good. Cooked to perfection Medium. Our friend had the rib eye and ate every bite. His wife had the fish fry and enjoyed it but could not finish as she had stolen some of my crab cakes. Lovely atmosphere and not too big of a dining room. Such great service from a lovely group of all woman servers and bartender. I think this is our new favorite place to eat in the North Woods. Please do not do anything to that Crab Cake recipe. Waited 20 minutes or so for a seat to open up at the bar. Service was skilled and friendly. Martini made just right. Split pea soup possibly the best I've ever had. Bone-in rib eye steak not on the menu but was the special. Very good.

When I was a kid, our yearly vacation was to a primitive Fishing Camp in Land O' Lakes Wisconsin…read more No hot water, no tub or shower, primitve toilet and no AC. I learned early I didn't give a damn about fishing, and even less about 2 weeks in a primitive fishing camp. Every few days we had to go re-stock supplies (mostly beer for the grownups) and it was a trip to Boulder Junction to do so. I couldn't wait for those trips to get away from the crushing boredom of the camp. Back then, (60's) Boulder Junction was speck of fly-shit on the map of Wisconsin, quaint and gemütlichkeit as it was. In the 21st century, it ain't much bigger, but it sure has grown in vibe. It's now an artsy-crunchy village of shops and places for the well-to-do who have their summer joints in the vicinity to have a cocktail and a bite to eat. The Guides Inn had the highest YELP rating and was close to our Hotel on the night we arrived, so it got the nod. It's a Wisconsin Supper club, dressed a notch up. The gruff fellow at the bar (who was gruff at some other folks, not us) eased up and took care of us admirably, crafting divine Brandy OldFashioneds which balmed the edge off the 400mile+ ride from Chicago. There were a bunch of us, and they could not fit our entire group at one table, so we were in 4-top tribes. Not perfect, but it was OK. There was an amuse-bouche relish tray-haven't seen one of those in a while. Typical of Wisco Supper clubs these days, there were surprises on the menu. In this case Walleye Cheeks. If you've ever been to a fine Spanish/Basque resto, you might have had Kokotxas (Cod Cheeks) which are among the finest Tapas you can get (and an apt delivery system for Garlic, Chilis and Olive Oil). There's a pocket of very tender and tasty meat on the side of certain fishes heads called "cheeks" (it makes sense, n'est ce pas?) and on a Walleye, which is a fine eating fish in any preparation, the "Cheeks" are indeed a delicacy. They were breaded/fried here and totally yum. The onion soup was, as well. My Entree was Beef Wellington (another dish you might not suspect from a Wisco Supper club in the middle of nowhere) and it was top-notch. Accompanied by Wild Rice-There's the Northwoods signature. Wife had a regular Filet Mig which she reported was fine. Service was good, and the decor a step up, like I indicated previously, from a garden-variety Wisco Supper Club. The CHECK, however, was closer to downtown Chicago than the map might suggest. Not the bargain bill you usually find at Supper Clubs, but I'll say the dear prices were commensurate with the bread and circuses. A pleasant evening in a pleasant place...
