The Quality Inn: A Case Study in Thermodynamic Failure…read more * The Atmospheric Conditions: The pool area isn't just a leisure space; it's a self-contained weather system where the ventilation has been "optimized" for profit, resulting in indoor glaciers that would make a National Geographic photographer weep. The poor air circulation in addition to saving money, is no doubt generating revenue for pharmaceutical companies treating all of the mold allergies. * The Biological Indicators: That signature "clean pool" smell is actually the olfactory evidence of a thousand local toddlers using the facility as a public latrine--a chemical reaction of chloramines that serves as a warning to anyone with an intact immune system. At $7 a local kid for a whizpool, it's surely a profit center, and you can certainly smell the difference. * The Culinary Experience: Breakfast consists of "food-like substances," specifically chunks of microwaved egg that appear to be weeping for their own existence and pork sausages swimming in a reservoir of grease and existential dread. * The Lobby Ambience: The computer station is guarded by a territorial child-in-residence who has seemingly aged into the upholstery over the last two years, ensuring that "tacky" remains the primary aesthetic. * The "Coffee": A beverage so weak and feeble it qualifies as a crime against humanity. It isn't brewed coffee in the way that we've all come to expect; it's a hot, wet insult served in a cup, located--fittingly--in a completely different room to distance itself from the concept of actual food. If you ever find someone whose teeth are on fire, and you are fresh out of urine, this coffee is a great substitute...

We just got back from the most magical, relaxing weekend getaway at Canoe Bay. This place now holds…read morea very special place in our hearts as it truly was a luxurious, peaceful, nature-immersive experience! We stayed for two nights in one of the cozy Escape Tiny Houses and loved it! The screen porch was the perfect place to relax, enjoy a cup of coffee, read a book and be surrounded by nature in pure comfort and without the bugs ;). Everything exceeded our expectations including the magical, organic garden full of huge, beautiful blooms and vegetables used for the culinary, top-notch meals created and offered on-site! We did 1 dinner at The Inn and 2 meal services delivered to our room (1 breakfast, 1 dinner). It is such a cool concept and feels luxurious to have these fresh meals delivered directly to your cabin at the allotted times. Be sure to order and reserve your meals ahead of time! It's an experience you won't want to miss! The service was amazing as they made everything so easy for us. I loved that we could just text to make arrangements! We also enjoyed in-room massages, where Gentry Massage therapists come to you! It's easier if you contact ahead of time as they need to arrange schedules on their end. We went for a lovely canoe adventure one morning and a short hike for another. It felt like we were in a dream! Everything looks ethereal which added to the relaxation. I can't say enough good things about this place. You have to experience it for yourself! Thank you for the most delightful, special and memorable experience Canoe Bay! We can't wait to come back!

We stayed in "The Escape" tiny house. We were both completely in awe, both of our expectations were exceeded. We were visiting for a birthday long weekend, and it was the perfect place to unwind and enjoy each other's company. I actually appreciated the lack of cell service! Our tiny house had a wonderful view of the lake and forest. We ordered dinner two times and breakfast once. All of the food we had here was fabulous. The menu changes each night, and make sure to order on time, because it's not to be missed! We went on a few hikes, which weren't long, but were enjoyable. Overall, canoe bay is a wonderfully kept, luxurious "lost in the woods" type of romantic getaway.

Heritage Court Motel - The Heritage Court Motel of Thorp

The Heritage Court is the sort of…read morejust-off-the-highway motel you were amazingly lucky to happen upon in the days before Motel 6 and Super 8. The family who run the place are friendly and eager to make your stay a pleasant one. This is one reason I give four stars for a property which otherwise would rate three. The rooms have cable TV (basic: CNN and TBS, but no premium channels), and a ceiling fan. There is central heat, but no air-conditioning that I could see. My bathroom had a shower stall but no tub. Towels about like Motel 6, except in addition to the normal white ones, I found a burgundy colored washcloth and face towel. A sign in the bathroom read: "Burgundy Towels for -Cosmetic removal -Extra soil. Thank you." Standard motel soaps; no shampoo. My room was small, with a double bed and a twin daybed. I had enough room, and a couple would do OK. I can't quite see it working for three unless they take turns stepping out or relaxing in bed while others move about. My room was not wheelchair accessible: this is an older property (likely pre-ADA grandfathered). On balance, I felt that the price I paid was a good value for what I got. The essentials covered, here is what wins the fourth star: As I said, the innkeepers are friendly and welcoming. They've taken some time and thought to create a cheerful décor that goes a long way toward making a small room feel cozy rather than cramped. They'll give you good advice on where to eat and where to find things. The office is in a beautiful historic 1891 Victorian house (the rest of which is the family's home). While many roadside inns provide chintzy please-give-us-free-advertising postcards, in my room at the Heritage Court I found postcards with beautiful pen-and-ink renderings of the motel and the historic house. Classy. If you need basic, reasonably-priced accommodation that is a bit friendlier and has more personality than a national chain, the Heritage Court Motel of Thorp is the place to stay.
