I went to UC Berkeley for a meeting, and the person I was meeting with took me to Gateway Cafe, a beautiful cafe inside the new Bakar Gateway building on campus. The line was going out the door, so I immediately knew this was a popular spot! Fortunately, it moved surprisingly quickly.
I ordered the rice bowl with lemon-herb rice and herbed grilled chicken souvlaki, with the cucumber-tomato salad and crumbled feta as my two toppings, finished with lemon tahini. After ordering, I was given a device that would alert me when my food was ready, and I didn't have to wait long before it buzzed.
The bowl was delicious! Everything tasted fresh and made with high-quality ingredients. I also loved that the bowl came in a reusable container with compostable silverware. When I was finished, I simply dropped the container into one of the collection bins outside the cafe.
Not only was the food fantastic, but I also felt great knowing that the cafe has made sustainability part of the dining experience without making it inconvenient. Great food, beautiful space, efficient service, and sustainable practices--Gateway Cafe is officially my new favorite place to eat on campus! read more
