My experience with this complex is average at best. The complex itself is decently nice. The pool is a very clean, cabana-style & the units aren't horrible but certainly are not great. I was living in a "renovated unit," however, the built-in desks in the bedrooms were old, the couch was old, the built-in entertainment stand was old but everything else was updated & *poorly updated at that. The paint was just thrown on the walls, cabinets and countertops were put on quickly & it shows. Maintenance was pretty good at responding to calls & getting things taken care of-- I'll give the complex that. The biggest issue is that everyone in the office has a different answer to your question & nobody can give you a clear answer on anything. I needed to find a relet for my unit since I graduated early. They barely give you any instruction on what to do. They told me to have my person who was taking my relet to fill out an application & indicate on it that they were taking over for me. Nowhere on the application is that an option. Additionally, you have to pay 85% of your current rent rate to them to break the lease. So they give me my balance & tell me to pay it as soon as I can online. They gave no date it was due by, nor did they tell me my online account would be deactivated once the new tenant moved in & I would be required to pay it via money order or check ONLY because previously, I was told I would keep access to the account as long as I had a balance. Finally, I get a letter in the mail showing I have 30 days to pay the balance or I will be sent to collections (even though I'm given no date it's due to begin with but okay, fine). So I go online to pay which I cannot because my account has been closed & I live in Ohio now, and when I call to ask how I can pay, they say they have sent my info to collections but it has not been 30 days yet? Long story short, I ended up having to send a friend money via an online app and have them write a check & take it to the leasing office to be processed to avoid being sent to collections. Moral of the story-- if you have to cut a lease short or need the office to do a task more difficult than giving you your mail, be prepared to have 5 different answers & have very vague letters come in the mail that have no information or clear instructions on how to complete something. read more

Parking is a nightmare. They went to Metropolis with plate readers at some point during the lease, and after the end of my daughter's lease she and her friends received parking notices (bills), some in the thousands. The bathrooms had black mold and the AC leaked constantly into their shower. They would bleach it and it would be back in days. The toilet and paper holder broke regularly...and this was a renovated apartment. My daughter's room had grey dust bunnies coming out of the AC vent which had to be removed regularly. It wasn't a little bit, it was as if the dryer vented directly into her room and her room was the lint catcher. The lock to the public park adjacent to the complex was broken - which was a safety concern. They try to scam you when you are moving out. They quite literally charged me 400$ for staying an additional 2 hours beyond my allocated checkout time of 12 noon. I understand Gateway has timelines but students are not people with a lot of resources. My U-haul was booked for 3pm and they charged me a 400$ for the 3 hours in between 12 and 3pm. Besides the appliances were old and rusting and no one would come to repair things when you raise concern on the RP. Its a scam even with all the decent reviews as they pay you points to post good reviews. There were so many issues with the apartment which i otherwise would not have posted but because of what they did to me. Here it goes: 1. The garbage disposal was overflowing, all the time. 2. My dryer vent caught fire and i raised a ticket which no one cared about 3.I raised repeated tickets for my flush cause it wasnt working and someone came fixed it temporarily and it broke down within the next 2 days again and no one ever came after that. 4. They also kept charging me for another extra insurance at assurant when i already had a third party insurance at lemonade. I tried multiple times to resolve it, frustrated with paying for two insurances. I even considered breaking my lease. No one ever got back to me on this. read more

Don't let the big gates fool you, this is not a secure place to live. Both me and my neighbors have had property stolen off our balconies by tweakers who can freely walk in and out of the complex through the open or broken gates. This entire place has been given the landlord special, nothing will last. Constant plumbing issues, and good luck getting maintenance to come help when you need them. Unsafe, Discriminatory, and Deeply Mismanaged I lived at Gateway at Tempe from Sept 2020 to June 2021, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone--especially students, people with disabilities, or anyone expecting basic professionalism and safety. Management frequently entered the unit without notice and followed up with aggressive calls over minor roommate complaints--like me waking up early or kitchen cleanliness--even though I was respectful and tried my best. Meanwhile, serious issues like drug use, constant loud parties, and rampant unit break-ins were ignored. There were shootings, car break-ins, and disturbing noise at night, but management never took real safety action. Worse, after being discharged from a psychiatric stay, I was forced into three lease transfers in one year without proper notice. My rent went up each time, with unexplained charges. Complaints about my mental health symptoms--like crying--were treated like lease violations, which is discriminatory and violates ADA protections. My 2021-2022 lease renewal was also mishandled. Promised discounts, unit details, and move-in terms were not honored. I was misled about my ability to cancel. Even when I found replacement tenants, management gave them inaccurate info too. Add in a bug infestation and you can imagine how stressful it became. I eventually had to block management and roommates for my own peace of mind. My future lease was only revoked after I filed a BBB complaint--but no one took responsibility for the damage done. Gateway at Tempe is unsafe, discriminatory, and mismanaged. The apartment has a very terrible maintenance service, and the office is not helpful at all! I ask them to fix the laundry door, and they just came and did nothing. Also the WiFi in this apartment always broke, and it usually takes 4-5 days to make sure what is going wrong and starts fixing it. I'm officially living at gateway for almost a month now and I would say it is a great place to live at. I love the pool and how chill it is there. and I currently am with a roommate I did not know prior to moving in and she is great. The only thing I would say needs improvement is the fact that the appliances are working when first moving in. We had to have the fridge replaced and the sink disposal fixed within the first week of us living in the apartment. even though there were some appliance issues, the quickness of the reaction and help was great. When I first moved in June 2021 everything was ok. Management would try their best to help and respond quick as they can. As time went on it became worse and they would stop responding to requests you put in or anything. Now recently they have a new management and is ran by a younger group. They do a very poor job in communication and responsibility on their end. They never have answers to questions you need and just tell you to fill out a form to get anything you need fixed and then you just have to wait. Not only have I been living with small cockroaches for 10 weeks, but management and staff do VERY LITTLE to approach the problem. The one time Burns did come out to gas my apartment, they told me that they are also gassing the upstairs apartment because they have the same problem. The manager looked confused when I told her that like she had no idea what was going on. All appliances are 10+ years old, and everything is constantly breaking. I found it very unhuman that I have not received my security deposit till this day after finishing my lease that ended July 2020. I left my apartment in a way better condition than I had it. On top of that, I have lost a lot of money living there, my car got broken into also got damaged and my motorcycle almost got stolen. I have contacted the leasing office every month ever since. He arrived to a room with a gross stained mattress, sticky and trash littered floors, unsanitized dirty bathroom, missing closet rod and dresser drawers, and old belongings from the previous tenant. Absolutely unacceptable especially during this pandemic where health and safety is priority. He obviously couldn't move in and had to sleep in his car!!!! I would not recommend this apartment complex to my worst enemy. We have been living in a roach infested unit for the past 6 months. We kill on average about 5-10 bugs every night. Management did absolutely nothing when we confronted them about the issue. An exterminator was eventually sent out who spent probably less than 30 seconds "spraying" our apartment. The issue was still not resolved. We took matters into our own hands and bombed the apartment. This is not how it should have been handled. I am extremely disappointed with the quality of living here and would strongly advi against anyone looking to sign a lease. I would give this place zero stars if I could. Update: Gateway sent out an announcement at the beginning of the Coronavirus Pandemic saying they would wave late fees as needed. Amenities around the complex are poorly kept and are not working half of the time. The gates are not working constantly so there is no sense of security. There is a lot of crime that takes place in this community. Myself and my friends had our cars broken intoon separate occasions. A PERSON WAS SHOT AND KILLED in this complex over a "deal gone bad". Hanna, the property manager, is very rude and unhelpful with any sort of issues with your apartment. My AC went out last summer and it took them almost two months to finally come and fix it after we had filed requests multiple times. I made the mistake of renewing my lease with an upgraded unit, and the process could not be more difficult, inconsiderate, and uncompromising. I signed a lease contract indicating my new lease began July 15th, assuming I'd be moving in on July 15th. Instead they give barely a month's notice of the specific day that move-in is required, entirely inflexible, inconsiderate of whether the renter is even in town. This is just the tip of the iceberg with this facility, which regularly brings in contractors who trash the property. I've had to get my tires on my car patched, then replaced, TWICE because of construction nails left throughout the facility. I watch maintenance crews walk by literal trash on the property and not consider picking it up. The employees will smile at you while serving you crap on a plate. Ignore the price of this place. Absolutely terrible place to live. Customer service is nonexistent here and maintenance takes forever to get problems resolved if they even come at all. On the flip side, maintenance will come in your unit without knocking or prior notice for something that you didn't even call them for. Where do I even start... So we pull up on move in day and get our keys without any trouble. We step into the apartment and sense it's fairly hot - thermostat read 84 degrees. We proceed to move our stuff into the living room, which came off as a little dusty but nothing too serious. Finally we get to the rooms and notice both desks were broken - toilets also had a poop ring around them with a "sanitized" band tied to them. Whoever cleaned these clearly has poor judgement of what "sanitized" means. Anyways, as I am about to disinfect the toilet, I lift the seat and to my surprise is black mold on the toilet! We call the manager (Ed - very nice guy) and he takes photos but really doesn't do much for us, although he did what he could. He calls maintenance, they come and to our surprise maintenance entirely denies the fact that there is mold! Tells us we need a 3rd party to come test it and that he refuses to do so. His claim was that it's dirt or poop, not really sure what he was talking about. When we left, the thermostat read 86 degrees, although maintenance supposedly fixed it as we were moving our stuff out due to being so disgusted by the filth inside the unit. The bed also had what appeared to be semen stains, though they claimed it was paint. After talking to 2 managers and then finally the GM, we were able to hassle for a lease termination. Overall the staff was very unhelpful and our wait time just to talk to a manager exceeded 2 hours. This place is awful... I would definitely avoid at all costs. I feel very sorry to whoever will move into this apartment, considering Gateway's "investigation" on the matter post lease termination will likely just consist of a wipe down of the bathroom without any other action taken. read more

Updated review on 9/21/20 After throwing a tantrum over email to leasing management, my emails were always responded too quickly and graciously, and with attention to my exact needs. If this is representative of future interactions with Gateway, then I have no worries. Original review: Terrrrible. This is my experience. Why? When I first moved in roughly a month ago, my bathroom hadn't been cleaned and was a disgusting mess! Toilet hadn't been cleaned and toilet paper was left stranded on the floor from the previous tenant, among various other offenses in the bathroom area. As far as the rest of the apartment, I remain to be impressed. Dirty and not kept up. Constantly having issues with key fobs and WiFi. Additionally, I was placed in a unit that put me in violation of my contract(I'll keep this violation confidential), so for the past 3 weeks I have been sending email after email, trying to get a unit change. 3 weeks!! I've had to pull teeth to get sporadic responses from the front office as well as leasing management. Last but not least, BUGS! My brother's apartment (a renovated unit!!) had to get fumigated for roaches right after they moved in. Bleh. Between myself and my brother's experience, GatewayatTempe obviously does NOT care about maintaining a good rep with its tenants once they've signed on the dotted line. I lived in a apartment with two other girls and my apartment was nothing like the model they showed me. It was very dirty, cabinets were broken, and I found the growth of mold. Some problems that I had when I first moved in was my toilet was some how connected to the hot water. I couldn't even sit on my toilet seat because the toilet was so hot and steam was coming from the water! I've never seen that before. They came to "fix" it 4 times and finally the fourth guy discovered that the toilet has been connected to hot water and it was like that ever since this complex was built. Also when we first moved in my vents were so gross. I have extreme asthma and it felt like these vents were blowing straight dust. The carpets also have never been changed and are the grossest carpets I've ever seen. You take a step on the carpet and dust would fly up. I even vacuumed and the whole filter would be filled every time I vacuumed, which I vacuumed atleast once a week or more. If you get a furnished room, which is what I did. The beds were super questionable, there was stains on them and I saw a few bugs, which they claim are just "carpet beetles" but it's still gross! I eventually asked for new mattresses and they did with no extra charge which was the least they can do. Wifi! Make sure if you decide to live here, that you are okay with terrible wifi. One time during a major test week the wifi was out for four straight days... Finally, the management here is not the best. They were extremely rude to me, and I couldn't break my lease due to extra costs. They didn't help me out much with any of the problems in my apartment and it would take them days to fix anything. Before moving in, I made sure to read all the reviews for this complex and they were all so terrible. My roommate and I were desperate for an apartment last minute and we needed something very cheap. Seriously, if you choose to live here BE CAREFUL. I was gone this past weekend for a family gathering and my roommate was working all day and someone broke into our apartment and took a shower in my bathroom. Nothing was stolen as far as we can tell but my clothes were rearranged so I'm guessing this person might have taken some of my clothes and I just haven't noticed yet. Someone that lives in the complex could have even broken in, we don't know. When I went to ask my next door neighbor if she saw anything she was being VERY weird and suspicious but of course she denied everything. It is honestly disgusting that this was able to happen and when I called gateway about it all they said was sorry and maintenance is coming to change the locks in the morning. They didn't even bother filing a report or anything. When we called again to ask more questions about what we should do the guy seemed so unbothered and just didn't give a crap until I started grilling him about all the unsafe things about this complex, like the broken fence they still have yet to fix that let's anyone from the public community roam freely into gateway (which is probably how some random lady we don't know was able to come into our apartment) I've also had my car broken into TWICE and they didn't care about that either. When I asked if security can patrol this area more they said I would have to pay out of pocket for that. Honestly, gateway doesn't care about your safety, they just want your money. I will say, the maintenance is very nice and they do a great job fixing things for you and making gateway look much better everyday which is why I'm giving one star. Management: please do better and actually try giving a shit about your tenants. Their safety should always be you #1 concern, not their fucking money. Not to mention there's always something wrong with the appliances and it takes DAYS for maintenance to fix. And their so called amenities are piss poor. The new management that took over is incredibly helpful and responsive. The maintenance team is also diligent and resolves any requests made in a timely manner. Additionally they hold fun and engaging events each month! Overall, you can tell that this property is making a strong turnaround. Where do I begin! Back in late June of this year I signed a lease with my friend for a 2x2 Standard and we were told that everything was set for us to move in on August 16th. A few weeks later, we get a call from management telling us that the office had FAILED to put us in a lease together and ONLY MADE NOTE of it. This then resulted to our 2x2 standard getting occupied because of this "note". We were then told about the Super 2 deal and we signed and finalized the lease for that apartment on July 10th and they had told us that everything was set and ready for us come move-in day. We also made sure to pay our rent and security deposit for that room when it was due. MOVE-IN DAY COMES, they end up giving me the key to a 2x2 standard apartment that I DID NOT PAY OR SIGN FOR. They then move me to a 4x4 apartment without any question, although I also DIDN'T PAY OR SIGN FOR THAT APARTMENT. OH WAIT...THERE'S MORE! On 08/17/2020 I wake up to a random lady from management in my apartment on the phone asking if I should even be in here. I then get a call from Ben in the Management Office who told me to move out of CC 1064A by tonight AFTER I SPENT THE ENTIRE DAY SETTLING IN AND CLEANING THE PLACE, to the room right across from me CC 1063A that was being occupied by another girl . I told him that I had to speak with my roommate about the change but he was super insistent that there were 4 boys present that had to move in today. I kept telling him that both my roommate and I paid for a Super 2 and we don't want to live with a stranger especially during COVID-19. He then gave me the ultimatum to either move in with the girl in CC1063 or have 2 MALES move into the apartment I was currently in. WHAT I'M MOST PISSED OFF ABOUT is the fact that neither one of the 3 rooms I was taken to is the Super 2 apartment I ALREADY PAID AND SIGNED THE LEASE FOR, YET THEY HAVE THE AUDACITY TO PROMOTE THE SUPER 2 BEDROOM ON THEIR WEBSITE. IF YOU'RE GOING TO PROMOTE SOMETHING, THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE THAT AVAILABLE AND NOT HAVE ME MOVE ROOM TO ROOM DURING A FUCKING PANDEMIC AND CLASSES STARTING IN 2 DAYS. THE CHERRY ON TOP TO THIS WHOLE CLUSTER FUCK, is that I'm now being charged $1,702.29 for a number of charges I wasn't aware of for the room I just moved into today.
