Gary's manager banned me because I challenged him on the phone about a delivery for wine ordered on a Saturday. I kept calling and they eventually delivered on Wednesday. Manager was unhelpful and argumentative. Then I was told that I was banned from deliveries indefinitely. This was a disgraceful and unhelpful way for Gary's to handle a customer service issue. My first time visiting Gary's to pick up an online order. It's a huge store with so many good collection and options for wine, beer and spirits, including top line shelf brands. Aisles are wide. Shelves are clean and clearly marked. Super convenient to find different types and brands. They also got a cold cut section full of variety of cheese. They sell some small snacks, candies, accessories, and gift bags and baskets as well. Prices are competitive. They have membership discounts too. Associates are super friendly. Few of them greeted me and checked if I needed help. Checkout process is quick and convenient. This is really one of the nicest liquor stores I have been in Bergen. read more

Spoke to the manager who was unapologetic and offered no solution to the issue while acknowledging the picture showed a different product. Will never order from here again. read more

I've always loved shopping at Gary's! The sales staff is incredibly knowledgeable and always take's their time to find out what my needs are and select the perfect bottle. Also, not a zoo like Total Wine. Additionally, they also have an excellent selection of gifts. The variety is plentiful, the staff is nice, its in a plaza so parking isn't a problem and they're always fully stocked. I like the convenience since I am always picking something up at Closter Plaza. But sometimes with convenience comes price. Their wines are on the pricey side. Wine selection is good and varied. Beer selection however not so great. They focus more on the InBev beers but I am more interested in beers from smaller breweries. Service is good. They ask if you need help but they are not pushy like Total Wine. I come here when in a pinch and need a bottle or two. But definitely not a place to fill the wine fridge since they also do not offer any kind of bulk discount. read more

I go back for it, they don't have it. I pick up some other prosecco wines that I think may be comparable. They are fine but more expensive. Great selection of wines (albeit pricier than Total Wine) and I love that you have a cheese and charcuterie section but PLEASE appoint someone more experienced in that department. The young man who cut our cheese massacred one piece into unappetizing chunks and the other piece was three times the size I needed. It also took him forever to slice and wrap meat. Jamon Iberico at $89/lb should be sliced on a Jamonero. This department needs to be more professionally run. If I'm paying $10-20 per piece of cheese, it needs to cut to better standards and much much faster. read more

While visiting my daughter I needed some supplies and happened into Garys new Closter store. What a beautiful store that had everything! I loved the cheeses and the wine samples. The Manager was friendly and gave me a quick guide in Bordeaux, the daughter is a Bordeaux aficionado and besides a great bottle the cheese to go with it was perfect. He was extremely Knowledgeable and he is very funny. Best part is private wine room with hard to find wines. I wish I had one close to where I live but anytime I'm in the area it's my new "go to" liquor store, it has it all in a "laid back" no hurry atmosphere. read more

Very disappointing. Even though they have a large variety, the staff has little knowledge of wine. Once I asked for Marsala and the girl told me no one by that name worked there. The other day we went for a tasting of Rose wine. The rude man behind the counter loudly said to his co worker "all these people think it's a party and are just here for free wine". Gary's is ok for liquor or wine. Don't dare buy anything besides that. I had the misfortune of picking up a small bag of nestle chocolate without looking at the price (my fault). After a bit of confusion I looked at the price 14.00 for a small bag of Hershey chocolate. I went back and both me and Cashier were confused that a small bag of chocolate was so expensive. Maybe wine and liquor are reasonably priced so that they can rip you of on cheese and side items. If you are only going for alcohol than Gary's is ok. This is a new, beautiful store, and the wine I was looking for was on sale for a terrific price. Not only is there a great wine selection but there is also a large area devoted to cheese selection and even some chocolates. I am giving the two on the selection of products carried in the store which is the positive. The leadership in the store is shaky. I've been to this location 12-15.times. The manager doesn't give positive affirmations. He is skilled at shaking his head and giving a "no" to any questions. If you work in a retail environment, positive responses bring sales. Also, know your stock! It trickles down to the staff and they are unable to achieve their potential as there is a culture of negativity. Happy staff means happy customers. It's a shame I can give only 5 stars to Gary's, as a company and especially for the Closter, NJ store and it's manager, Larry. I'll try to keep this short. Gary's sent an update about my order, saying they would let me know when it was filled. I kinda panicked and replied I needed it the next morning for a birthday party. Less than 20 minutes later, Patty in the Wayne, NJ called and said they have what I ordered in Wayne but not in Closter (near my house). We had some conversation and Patty said she'd check with Larry to see what can be done. The next thing I know, Patty is on the phone telling me Larry sent one of his staff to drive to Wayne and pick up my order. And not for pickup the next day, but in a couple of hours! I was completely floored by that amazing customer service and was happy to meet Larry and tell him in person. I've been a Gary's member/customer for a few years, but this customer experience has made me a true and loyal Gary's fan. Try them, I doubt you would ever be disappointed! I have attended 2 excellent Wine tasting classes with Juile Margolis. The first was on Rose the second on Loire Valley. Julie was knowlegable and passed the information on in a fun way. Picked up from here once and have never revisited while their selection is extensive their staff is so rude. There are a bunch of adolescents working there who are clearly unorganized and rude. I talked to a girl on the phone who mistakenly told me my order could not be picked up without checking my order number first as she should've! super incompetent! After complaining about not getting the bottle on the same day as I was promised she decided to do the least of her job and check my order number and realized it was ready the whole time. I seriously had to deal with her raising her voice and berating me through the phone for 10 minutes and did not even get the apology I was entitled to receive afterwards. To make things worse a young man gave me my bottle and gave me attitude when I asked to talk to the manager, I guess the whole staff was gossiping about what had happened and decided to gang up on me what a waste of time. Finally got the manager to come out after arguing with this young man and she apologized for her incompetent employees. What a place! When they say to be a good leader is to lead by example, then Larry, Manger of this Gary's is a great leader. I stopped in to pick up some wine and check out this new store and was amazed at the attention to detail, the very personable staff, and the dedication to help customers like myself who are not too wine savvy. I found myself looking for a wine to pair with my dinner I was making for my wife and I and was approached by a very humorous and knowledgeable man. He took the time to explain to me what wines to pair with my dinner and why. Suggested others as well for other functions and gatherings and when I had asked him who the manager was to compliment him was amazed that it was him in front of me who took the time to talk with me and not just sell to me. This is definition of a great leader, taking time to get involved with customers on more than just a financial level! I will return again! Great job Larry and great store. read more
