Dr. McCarter retired apparently months ago and did not let his patients know. I went in today with my daughter for her appointment only to find out that there was a new Dr. I had never heard of. New staff is worthless and just kept saying, "I don't know" when I asked why no one let me know he had left when I had just talked to them on Wednesday. We left and will not be returning. I am so disappointed that after taking my daughter to Dr. McCater for the past 7 years he could not have communicated he was retiring and sold his practice and there would be a new doctor. Dr. Mc Carter worked on my wife's foot. Don't ask me what he was trying to do. She thought that she had a Morton's Neuroma. He agreed, and recommended that the neuroma be removed. He butchered up her toes, and took out some bones. He took off the pressure boot after only three days post-surgical. Ever since he did that her toes have throbbed and have sharp-pain when the tips are touched. When she complained at the follow-up he was genuinely disinterested. After that, my wife said that she felt intimidated by him. He did not want to discuss the surgery or the fact that the post-surgical pain persisted. Why won't he discuss the results of his surgery? He discharged my wife even though she still was in pain. read more

I went to Dr McCarter about 3 years ago for a running injury, or rather my foot hurt so bad I couldn't run at all. I hobbled into his office, and within a 30 minute procedure I was pain free - almost instantly. That's what I like-a doctor who can diagnosis and treat in a short visit. The pain has never come back. I have known Dr. McCarter for a long time. He has done two surgeries total, to fix the terrible job another orthopedic surgeon did on my feet. The surgery was a success 10 years ago on my right foot. This week I had surgery on my left foot; one more time Dr. McCarter had to fix the terrible job of the prior orthopedic. Dr. McCarter is not only an excellent surgeon, but he has a very nice personality, very personal, kind, an excellent profesional. Also his office staff are totally professional, kind, willing to help you in anyway you need. Dr. Mccarter and his staff are always ready to answer your questions to make sure you feel comfortable with the whole process. Three years ago, like I haven't had enough issues with all my feet, I broke my right foot. Dr. McCarter took care of me 100%. My husband now recommends Dr. McCarter to his own patients. Great doctors! Were able to get in same day to see Dr. Haupt! He and Dr. McCarter have great bedside manners. I was so happy they could see both my son for an ingrown toenail and my husband for a steroid shot for gout the same day! My husband was not in pain and finally able to walk. Dr. Haupt teaches at UCI and is very experienced. I am a physician and they are very efficient and charge less than another podiatrist we had gone too that had a lot of 5 star reviews. Don't worry about waits. If a doctor is good, there are always waits! Brought my husband back in for more shots for his gout and Dr. Haupt saved the day again! Dr. McCarter was fantastic! The office was able to get me in right away on a Monday morning and he immediately identified the issue with my toe. He fixed it, got me a prescription, and sent me on my way in under an hour. His bedside manner was great - very knowledgeable and personable. I had a very different experience compared to the other reviewers. I've seen him four or five times since 2004, and thought he was great. He was very helpful, and informative. He was the first Dr. that could actually tell me what was wrong with my foot, and how to correct it. He was friendly, and had adequate time to answer all of my questions. Dr. McCarter is exactly the type of doctor who capitalizes on uninformed clients to make a profit. AVOID. First of all it took me six weeks to get an appointment. Must be a pretty amazing orthopedist, right? Well I came in with ankle pain and after he evaluated it he went into this long, convoluted explanation about degree of roll and gait and all these other fancy words. Then his solution? Tape. He had an assistant come tape up my ankle. When I asked him if he recommend any other course of action like maybe PT, he said if the tape doesn't make my ankle feel better in two weeks, come back and I could buy one of his customized shoe inserts. What a scam artist. He was talking about pronation, and of course if he thought that that was the issue, he could've recommended I buy any number of high quality shoe inserts on the market, like Superfeet or Powerstep. But then it might've worked and made my ankle feel better, whereby I wouldn't have the opportunity to buy his product. AVOID. read more

I went to Dr McCarter for treatment of a plantar wart. He looked at it and assessed that it was very tiny, it shouldn't cause pain and was no big deal. Well, I told him that I had been treated by more than one dermatologist for this little guy for years. He laughed and said all of the dermatologists that fail send the patients to him and he always fixes what they can't. Well, when the laser surgery didn't work he was angry and asked me not to return. No second laser, nothing. Oh, but he did blame the fact that the wart didn't go away on my choice to wear Keds instead of athletic shoes. The two stars are for his use of Fluorouracil and efudex, because nobody had offered those drugs before. At least he tried something, and compared to the now four podiatrists I have seen he is very clean. read more

My experience at Dr. McCarter's office was one of the best experience I have had while visiting a doctors office. I went in as urgent because I had a very painful ingrown toenail and my primary doctor couldn't do much to help me. As I arrive to the office the front desk was very professional and helpful. Im afraid of needles, but Dr. McCarter was very gentle when it came to numbing my toe to remove the ingrown part of my nail, as he had explained to me that would help release the pressure causing my major pain. Doctor is very knowledgable, he answered all my questions and educated me about what maybe causing my problem and ways to fix it for sure. This is a practice I will be referring to all my friends and family and i will definitely be coming back for further treatments. Everyone at this office are very friendly and professional. The office and the treatment rooms are very clean, a huge plus for a medical office. Thank you Dr. McCarter for your help and staff for getting me in. Saw Dr. McCarter about a Morton's neuroma last year. We went through the usual metatarsal pad use, then injections. Unfortunately, those methods didn't prove useful in my case. We opted for surgery on February 24th, 2016. It's now May 7th, and I know we made the right decision. Dr. McCarter was amazing through the entire process. The surgery went smoothly, recovery and follow up went very well. I am now pain free and would recommend Dr. McCarter to anyone experiencing the type of pain I had. If there was a zero I would rate this podiatrist just that. My 96 year old grandmother had surgery on her toe. She is in perfect health. She suffers from deep corns, she's purchased new shoes, has had surgery, and this doctor thinks it is "beneath" him to shave down her corns. In a less than five minute $250+ visit, he produced THE worst bedside manner I've ever seen in a ... Shocking. Basically, he got the money he could from SCAN for her toe surgery and wants nothing to do with elderly follow up care. He was the rudest, most demeaning doctor to her face...dismissive and quite frankly, a jerk. I'm an educated individual with multiple degrees so to think he would do this while I watched is unconscionable, let alone if my grandma ever went by herself. Why go into a profession if you have ZERO compassion for the people you treat? I actually heard him tell his nurse to have my grandmother "hurry up to clear the room". We were seen in under 5 minutes. I will blast this all over Costa Mesa/Newport Beach Dr. Gary S. McCarter D.P.M. in hopes people are aware of your business ethics and lack of bedside manner. This foot doctor is one of the worst in Southern California. He thinks that he is one of the best and has a very non-caring and arogant attitude you have ever met in a physician. I saw him in 2004 and didn't like him, however, under my insurance plan there were only two others I could see. I saw them and thought I would try Dr. McCarter once again. It took over a month to get an appt. and then his attitude about doing something about my foot pain was that I should basically live with the pain. I asked him why in 2004 he said that surgery would help my foot pain and now all of a sudden there is nothing he can do. He also said point blank to me: Since I smoked he wouldn't touch me with a ten foot pole. I looked at him and told him he was the most arrogant physician I have ever seen with in the Greater Newport Physicians IPA and that it was a waste of time for me to have waited a month to see such a jerk. I would definitely never recommend him and also filed a formal complaint about him with Greater Newport Physicians IPA. Don't go unless you want to waste your time. read more

Very poor bedside manners. When I had questions to ask, he told me he was running late and didn't have time to answer them. I was never late to any of my appointments, rather early in fact, but he didn't have time to talk to me.... Dr McCarter performed surgery on my foot. Unfortunately, pain persisted for months (over a year, actually) afterward, but, that didn't seem to bother him at all. It bothered me, though. Apparently, some (pricey) orthotics were going to fix it all... No new X-rays, no new MRI... Anyway, the orthotics didn't fix anything. So, after going back again and again and again, and being told pretty much nothing, I decided to stop going and find someone else. Best decision I could take. I wish I could write a review about the competency of the doctor, but unfortunately, I can't get past the front office. I have been experiencing pain, bruising and swelling for almost a month and I thought finally, I can get some relief! Not the case, I was told that the next available appointment isn't until November! Clearly Dr. McCarter is not interested in seeing or caring for, new patients. After reading the previous YELP reviews, I can see that the office staff did me a favor. I too suffer from ankle pain and would be extremely irritated to be told I needed "tape"! I had a tiny painful mass removed from my heel and the Doc did a fabulous job 10 min removed it sewed it up and was good to go two weeks later removed stitches and two weeks after that it was great, no more pain. This is my first experience with Dr Mc Carter but he is truly a professional and knows exactly what he is doing and his assistant Karen is very professional as well extremely awesome at her job. I went to Dr. McCarter with a very severe hammertoe/bunion situation. My prior podiatrist had assessed my situation and said I would simply have to live with the problem. He said there was nothing that could be done. Not one to give up that easily, I sought another opinion. I went to see Dr. McCarter. Luckily, he had a different vision for my foot. He gave me hope. I recently had surgery to correct the problem and I couldn't be happier. Through it all (the surgery and the recovery process) he and his staff have been a pleasure to work with. I am so happy I went to Dr. McCarter and would highly recommend others to do so. I also would like to mention that he fitted me with an orthotic for my shoes that genuinely helped my feet. I have had probably five pairs of expensive computerized orthotics over the years that were pretty much useless and difficult to get adjusted to. Dr. McCarter, on the other hand, made a plaster mold of my foot which resulted in an orthotic that was an amazing fit for my foot. It helped to relieve my foot pain almost immediately.
