Well I always cut a new restaurant some slack, they need time to get systems worked out, etc. And in fairness, this place has just opened.
BUT, this meal set a new standard as the WORST new restaurant experience I've ever had.
48 minutes from sitting down to get a drink, not including asking multiple staff members if we could get something, anything really, to drink, and eventually having a floor manager intervene. Well we eventually got a drink, and then ordered food. I ordered an appetizer (soup) and a house burger medium rare. About 40 minutes after we ordered, main courses started to arrive, but no sign of the soup. It arrived shortly thereafter, but not until most main courses had arrived. I declined it, figuring the burger would be coming, and sure enough, the burger arrived almost immediately, at this point soggy and lukewarm. Sent it back. A replacement came back within a few minutes that was over cooked (medium well) and again lukewarm, and missing the onions, etc (the trimmings). Sent that back, gave up on the idea of eating at that point.. I received no apology, just an attempt by the waiter to blame me (in Spanish to one of our guests), for ordering a burger medium rare.
When our bill arrived it included a bottle of wine that we didn't order. Again, no apology. Once corrected our bill was just under 500 pesos for their cheapest bottle of wine and a dish of not-very-good pizza.
It takes a lot to really upset me. Under trained staff will make blunders that in a moderately priced restaurant won't overly damage the restaurant. But this is a high priced restaurant even by GDL standards, let alone Ajijic.
Tellingly, after intervening to get our initial drink orders going the floor manager failed to return at any time to check if things were going any better.
Conclusion: If you're curious about Garufa I'd suggest eating there in the next few months. They may not be around any longer than that. Oh, and be prepared for wines marked up 250% from store prices, and check your bill carefully. read more
