I came with a group to celebrate a birthday, and Yves treated us like family! Complimentary champagne toast, a brownie with a candle for the birthday boy, and a shot of Bailey's for everyone to end the night. Yves himself also came and sat down with us for a bit to chat; truly the best service we've gotten in Ajijic. The ribs and queso fundido were exceptional. The steak, to me, could have had a little bit more of a crisp outside, but it was still yummy. Salad bar was very nice as well. On our last trip, we visited Yves three times. While it's not perfect, the donkeys, pool, ambience make it a good place for any meal or just meeting friends for a glass of wine in the evening. Menu along with the prices cover most of the bases. Service is very friendly but the food can be a little slow if you are used to the north of the border pace. Just enjoy a drink and relax a bit. Lighting at night next to the pool invites pleasant conversation and sitting further away from the restaurant has a more private feel. I would like to see better signs next to the salad bar and metal chairs outside would add some class. Other than that, it's a good spot to put on the list for places to take a friend, families and especially kids. No one goes away hungry. read more

Came here at the suggestion of a friend we were visiting in town. She described it as American food in a garden and that pretty much nails it. After entering through the front gates you're greeted by two rescue donkeys, Vino Blanco and Martini. Choose a table positioned around a sparkling pool and enjoy the paintings hanging all over the place featuring those adorable donkeys. I had the beef taco salad which was ridiculously huge. The others in my part got the quiche (which comes with salad bar) and and patty melt which were also tasty. Reasonably priced, very attentive and sweet staff, and they finish your meal with a bailey's shot on ice. Yum! read more

I don't understand some of these 1 and 2 star reviews. I've been going there for 3 years, 5 Stars every time. I mean, have you seen their Taco Salads, either with Salmon, Beef or Chicken. Absolutely Beautiful EVERY time. Service has been 'Spot On', again every time. Yes, the Salad Buffet is a little lame, maybe just not enough customers to warrant a buffet, but who cares? Just order one of the Taco salads, and you too will be coming back for more. read more

Beware: most of the Yelp reviews are four or more years old. Yes, Yves has cute donkeys and a very nice owner. The pool is nice, with fountains that shoot into the water. The plentiful art has a certain charm, if not finesse and artistic merit. Parking is easy. But Yves is tripped up by several things that are an easy "fix." First, the white plastic tables and chairs (courtesy of Corona beer) have to go. Ugly and uncomfortable. Second, the "salad bar" presentation is classless, lazy and desultory, with ugly (or no) lighting; it dampens one's appetite. You serve yourself from low tables using individual fork and spoon settings for each diner, rather than a communal serving utensil offered for each item (maybe this is a Covid protocol). The tomato slices are laid out singly as if they are gems -- in overly neat rows (maybe 12 or sixteen slices). Tomatoes are abundant in Mexico. What's with this stilted presentation? You take four slices and a third of the tray is gone. Cucumbers are sliced length-wise (weird and harder to eat). Lettuce and carrot are well presented. But then come corn, panela, radishes, and fruit. I'm a fan of beets in salad bars so I appreciated these (nice chunks). There are four dressings offered (vinaigrette, blue cheese, 1000 island, and one other), served in big bowels (not unattractive, in my view). Another positive: a server offers you freshly ground pepper as you head out the door to your table. Third, the main courses are ok but cry for updating: the whole menu seems "tired" (the quiche Lorraine looked exhausted as well). Maybe this is my problem with Yves: place is filled with gringo geriatrics who resist change, preferring Yves just the way it's always been. Yves is the "old house shoes" of Ajijic restaurants. Familiar, comfortable, but unattractive and malodorous to all but the person who wears them, day in and day out. read more

Very popular place for older gringos. If you like bland food that takes forever to get to you this is your place. My parents wanted to meet here so we did. It took over an hour and a half to get our food (they weren't that busy). We ordered two salads, grilled shrimp, a shrimp burger and chicken fundito. The chicken fundito came out with shrimp, not chicken and the cheese was a solidified, cold mess. My husband said the shrimp tasted "off" so he didn't eat them. My mango margarita was a thick, smoothie consistency. Basically a really poor experience. Yeah, the burros are cute, but there's also a dog that bites...signs that say stay away...why have a biting dog in a place of business? Won't be back. read more

We had heard many good things about Yves', so we decided to stop there for lunch today. WOW! The ambience, service, and food were all exceptional. The fresh warm rolls they brought out were delicious (this, from someone who very rarely even tastes rolls at restaurants, let alone eats them and wants more), and the service was prompt without being pushy. We both had the salad bar, and it was fantastic: the variety they had was wonderful, and everything was very fresh (I met a vegan customer while at the salad bar, and he said it's his favourite in the area). We ordered the Quiche Lorraine, and the Chicken Quesadilla, and both were exquisite. The quiche was the lightest and fullest either of had ever had, and the balance of flavours was just right. The Chicken Quesadilla was the best quesadilla I've ever had, with the chicken being very tender, with a tantalizing flavour, something akin to great barbecue, without the smoky flavour. To add to the quesadilla was a terrific homemade guacamole, with nice chunks of avocado and tomato. We were very comfortable after that meal, but we couldn't resist some dessert when we heard two of the five options: a Brownie with Neoplitan ice cream (from what I was told, this was actually creamy, delicious Neoplitan ice cream, with natural strawberry flavour, not the chemically over-sweetened stuff in the States). Then there was my coconut pie... no, we are not talking about coconut custard pie; rather, this was shredded coconut in a denser pie filling, perhaps made with brown sugar, and a flavour I find myself craving while writing this four hours after lunch; it was not overly sweet like coconut pies in the States, but had more of a sweet and savory flavour about it. I am passionate about good Creme Brûlée, but Yves' coconut pie has just become my favourite dessert ever. Everything about our dining experience at Yves' was a joy, and we can't wait to return again, and again, and again. read more

We have lived in Ajijic for almost 3 years and Yves is one of our top two favorite restaurants. After reading the other reviews with some negative information I decided I needed to write about our experience. The food is almost always excellent. One time the tuna was tough but do I blame Yves or the the fish?.... or just accept it isn't going to beperfect every time? The negative comments from people that have been there one time regarding slow service, the boroughs, the contained street dog that have all been rescued by Yve seem unfair to the charm, generally really good food, great salad bar and extreme love that Yves has for the white boroughs as well as for other animals. The ambience is relaxing and the staff are considerate and attentive. Our favorite time is when life here slows down and the demanding snow birds have gone home! (Please, I am not saying all snow birds are demanding. Thankfully the rude ones are a small percentage.) Personally I love this restaurant and highly recommend it..... read more

We can walk to Yves from our home in West Ajijic. It is one of our most favorite restaurants. The food is always wonderful, the salad bar is the best in Ajijic, always fresh and tasty. Remember to get lots of the tomatoes, they are ripe and luscious. The service is stellar, and we love to sit out on the grounds by the pool sipping a cocktail (those are really good too!) and enjoying the quintessential Mexican view of the burro munching on grass in the side yard. Their salad bar is a joke. The names of the items are written on raggedly torn strips of paper board! The food is ok but many places are better. When I was there, the flys were bothersome and the table was like they bought it at a garage sale on the wrong side of town.
