Senseney Music offers a great deal of services when it comes to instruments and music needs, from…read morelessons to instrument rentals to everything in between. I don't have a lot of knowledge about most of what they offer, so my review is strictly in reference to the small area of the store I'm familiar with. When it comes to piano music, Senseney has everything a beginner needs. I decided to pick up the piano as an adult and use a self-teaching book, which I found at Senseney. This was recommended by the sweet and wonderful Ms. DeAnn. I had almost finished the book, but I felt like I needed more reenforcement of what I had learned before moving on, and she again came to the rescue, recommending several wonderful books. The books she pointed me towards are perfect, and not just because she's suggesting random books. Instead, she took the time to ask me where I was at in my learning, what I hoped to focus on, and what my general learning style was. She's definitely familiar with all the different piano curriculum, because she was able to locate two fantastic series that have been perfect for me. When one book in the series was out of stock, she ordered it to the store for me, and it arrived promptly. The prices of music books here are also excellent as well -- cheaper than the popular online book sellers, in most cases. While I can't recommend Senseney for most of what they offer - for example, I'm not really sure how competitive they are in terms of instrument rentals or percussion music - I can definitely recommend them for their piano music, due in large part to their wonderful staff and low prices.

Mixed review here, with praise for the GC staff (Skyler) and rolled eyebrows for Guitar Center's…read morecorporate Vintage Department. I was very interested in a 1970s 12-string that looked sufficiently ok, in the pictures online, to warrant a follow-up call. Turns out that when a guitar comes in to GC, they take pictures and record serial numbers, etc., and send that information off to the Vintage Department, who sets the price. In this case, the pictures did not represent the guitar even remotely. It was a mess. Neck bowed, body deformed at the neck joint and bridge, bridge lifting, pick guard curling badly...Hence, you have a wildly overpriced item that is in horrible shape and would've required anywhere from $1500-$2000 at a professional luthier to make it playable, and from Skyler's description of it, it may well have been beyond repair. I doubt my luthier would even touch it. So Skyler gets five stars for his objective honesty about the instrument. But for Guitar Center corporate to put an item like this up at what is at the high end of the price spectrum for a guitar of this age (laminate back and sides, mind you), is borderline criminal. Just imagine if some poor soul put this in his shopping cart and bought it sight-unseen for the full, non-negotiable price! Yikes. I've been playing for 67 years (yeah, I'm an old man), so I know what to look for in a guitar, and feel very fortunate that I did not act on impulse here. So folks, take a triple dose of "let the buyer beware" serum when dealing online with vintage instruments at Guitar Center. Their system is badly flawed in favor of the company bottom line, and not you, the customer. Do your due diligence and let the store peeps like Skyler steer you to a good instrument.
