If you're thinking about getting an inspection here, I would highly recommend either getting a second opinion or don't come here at all. They initially gave me 6 violations and a quote of $1600 to get everything fixed. Now I don't have any defense for that, since it is true that I haven't been taking care of my car as much as I should've been in the past couple of years so I wasn't surprised. I took my car to a different shop to get a second opinion (in Lynchburg VA at the time) and that's when I started to smell the BS: they told me that I only had 4 violations and the quote was around $900. Even if shops work differently and has different way of running things, that's quite the difference if you ask me. After I got all of the issues fixed (fixing a couple things myself), I took my car to a shop named Larry's since it was the closest shop to my job that had availability. They told me that they would be transferring to my car to their other shop in a different location to do the inspection and I agreed. What I didn't know was that that location was where I initially got my car inspected-- Garry's Greenbrier Service. They failed my inspection again, and this time, they changed parts around without telling me and went ahead and charged me for it for the part and labor. I've had my car inspected twice at this point, and no one has mentioned that I had issues with my light signals, until I got there. Ended up spending $128 to get my car inspected and my oil changed; oh and get parts changed in my car that I didn't even ask for. "We could've fixed it all for you" the gentleman at the counter said. Thanks bro, but I'd rather spend my $700 somewhere else. But this is just my experience though. Might be different for someone else. read more

Ideally, we all want car repair places to be both competent and honest. I'm not willing to settle for one or the other My first experience with Garry's was good--I needed a tire replaced and the other tires rotated. But after my 2003 Mazda (with less than 65,000 original miles) wouldn't start on a hot late October day, and jumping the battery didn't work, I had it towed to Garry's, Since it was also time to have the timing belt replaced, I asked them to take care of that, as well.The technician, Larry, said that the starting problem was the battery cable, that the battery was fine, and he had replaced the cable. Two days later, the car was very slow turning over and I took it back, suggesting that perhaps the problem WAS the battery, since it was old. I'm now convinced that they didn't look for any other issues at that time. They replaced the battery (which they had said didn't need replacing), to the tune of $200, Had I really thought that was the only problem, AAA would have replaced it on site for considerably less. Not long after, over the Thanksgiving holiday, I drove up to Northern Virginia, and parked the car overnight. The next morning, it again gave me trouble starting, but it did, and I followed my brother to Richmond. The car started sluggishly when I went to leave there, but got me home. I didn't drive it the next day. The following day, it reluctantly started yet again, and I needed a quick trip to the grocery store. I was in the store for about twenty minutes, if that. When I came out, the car was dead. Nothing. No sound. Since it was Sunday, I left it there overnight and had AAA tow it to Garry's again the next day. I still wonder what would have happened had I pulled over at a rest stop on I 64. Would I have been stranded there? The next day I again had the car towed to Garry's.Late the day after that, the technician called and said the car needed the starter replaced, and it would cost me more than $300. When I asked with more than a little frustration if this would actually fix the car, the technician said "Well, I don't know, the timing belt might go." Given that they had just replaced the timing belt, this was less than reassuring. (He later said he was just 'giving me an example'.) I went marginally ballistic, and asked the technician to have Garry call me back, and when he did, he was shouting before I said a word. "That starter needs replacing! I had to push it down a hill to get it into the shop." I pointed out that they had 'fixed' the starting issue twice before, and actually replaced a battery after telling me the battery didn't need replacing. I wanted assurances that the starter would fix the issue, and I thought that at least an apology was in order. I'm shocked that a business owner would talk to any customer that way, even (or maybe especially) one who's upset by their errors and short memory, and I wonder if they talk to their male customers the same way. Until I reminded him, Garry clearly had no recollection that the car had been in his shop twice before for the same issue. I suggested he check his records, then realized that the don't keep real records. I thought maybe there would be some apology, even a fake one, when I picked the car up, but there was not. Instead, Garry pointedly walked out of the room when I came in, and the technician continued to insist that the starter had been fine when I first brought the car in. Overall, I spent well over $500 for the issue to be fixed (not counting the cost of the timing belt replacement)--if it really is, and the car was in the shop for more than five days over a total of 30 days. It's also worth pointing out Garry's charges $35 extra if you use a credit card. I now wonder if that's because people can dispute credit card charges. I'm finished with them, unless there is yet another problem with starting the car. And I'm praying they knew what they were doing when they replaced the timing belt. This was the worst experience I've ever had with mechanics, and I've been driving for more than 40 years. read more

I've had my car there a few times. As a female, I'm always cautious/wary about auto repairs and not wanting to get ripped off. The staff as Garry's was great about this. My boyfriend called the shop after they'd done some diagnostic work and the staff talked him through all the repairs that would be needed, why they felt the repairs should happen, and what it would cost. I took my car in this morning with no appointment and they had it finished by lunch. The quote they gave me versus the actual final cost were pretty close, which was great. The cost of the work was high but fair- and necessary for the kinds of repairs I needed. The staff is always nice, prompt, and very helpful. read more

Garry's is sure to give you a fair estimate, and tell you what has to be done right now versus what can wait and explain why. They have always been quick to fix any problems, even handling everything via phone call when I had to get it towed there and was unable to pick up before close of business. I needed a mechanic for a normal state inspection, so my dad gave me the number to Garry's. I called the shop and the person who answered the phone was very enthusiastic and told me to come on over! When I arrived I went into the office, stepped up to the counter to be helped, and all four of the employees behind the counter made eye contact with me and then immediately stepped back into the garage to avoid having to speak to me. Where did the friendly person on the phone go? I stood in front of the counter for at least 5 minutes before one of them made their way over to ask me what I need. I told them I called ahead for an inspection and then filled out a bit of paper work. It took about 45 minutes for them to finish the inspection and then I was on my way. They obviously know an awful lot about cars, but they could all stand to improve their customer service skills. read more

Terrible. Stay far, far away from this place. This was a large job for a head gasket replacement. I went there on recommendation of friends and because they quoted the lowest price. Huge mistake. I had to leave my car there for several days and get a rental (typical for this repair, I understand). I paid $1,800 for the repair work. They told me it would burn off oil for a little while. After it didn't stop after a couple months, I took it back. They said "whoever did your head gasket replacement, messed up your car." I said "that was you." They said "no it couldn't have been." I said look up my account. Nope, we don't keep any paperwork. So I went home and found my receipts and took it back in to prove that they had done the work. I left the car, they said it was nothing wrong with it and it would burn off. (????) I got insanely busy with work and didn't have time to take in in again. Until I finally was between jobs several months later and took it to the Subaru dealer and another local shop in town, who BOTH told me that the head gaskets needed replacement. The other local shop said there was evidence that the work was never done. He took off the head gasket and showed it to me and said there was no way that part was new less than a year ago. I had to pay another $2,400 to have the entire repair done again (plus the hassle of being without a car and paying for a rental for days). I sent a letter to Garry's requesting a refund with no response. Don't go here. You will regret it. read more

Been going to this station for 8 years for service and repairs. Inspection recently which was rejected due to a frayed seatbelt. Wanted to charge me 400 dollars to fix the seat belt. In my opinion the seat belt was fine it was 99.2 % in tack. The fray you could not even measure with a ruler. Went to discuss issue with the owner ad his first statement to me is that he runs an honest shop. Well right there I know I am screwed. After being talked to like a child I finally ask the owner whats the deal you going to reject my car or put a sticker on it. He says he cant put a sticker on it . I tell him I am being ripped off and that i found a seat belt for 100$ and I looked up on you tube and it take 20 min to put on . He wanted to charge for a new belt from the dealer and 2 hours labor for a total of 400$ Buyer beware this place is a ripoff. Owner says he doesn't rip people off in over 40 years . Well today was the day and I was the first one. Nobody should pay 400 to fix a seat belt . read more
