We stayed here for one night in January, and the place was adorable! Very rustic & cozy, with the fireplace going. We stayed in the Birches Cabin, and it was wonderful! The room was very clean, comfortable and relaxing. We had breakfast in the morning before checking out, and it was delicious! Bacon was cooked perfectly, scrambled eggs were fluffy. There was an assortment of pastries, cereals, yogurt & fruit. They had a nice arrangement of cold cuts and condiments to make sandwiches for lunch, as well as ziploc bags so you could take food with you out on the mountain while skiing/hiking. The public bathrooms are extremely clean. The receptionist was very friendly and asked how our stay was during check out. If you are looking for a getaway that's remote and relaxing, be sure to stay here! The views are incredible, the food was great, and the service was great! read more

We loved our stay. It's such a quaint place and easy driving distance to wonderful ADK activities. You bet private access to Thirteenth Lake. It's peaceful and clean. And you get no cell service so work can't bother you. Wi-Fi is very good though. We stayed in the Tea Cottage. Glad we chose this lovely lodge. read more

This place is beautiful. Why the low stars? My wonderful friend had her truly magical wedding here - and the magic was all thanks to her efforts sprinting around the grounds. There was a serious lack of communication between the couple and the lodge, and because of that, there were wasted decorations, the bride scrambling to set up when she should have been getting ready, and an arduous journey from the conference room offered to get ready to the ceremony location, where she was more than visible to guests and the groom. I'm sure it's a great spot for adventurous getaways - but if you're looking for a wedding venue, their amenities and communication can be seriously improved upon. read more

This is hands down one of the best places I've stayed in this area. The people here are so attentive and accommodating. Definitely feel at home here. We had a little mix up when we arrived and unfortunately couldn't stay the first night, but they've definitely made it up to us. We got a free bottle of wine and the restaurant gave us dinner on them. We rented bikes fromm them, free of charge, and went mountain biking. It was beautiful. We went for a lake view balcony room. Definitely worth it. The view is spectacular. Dinner was amazing. I was honestly blown away by the quality, plating, and flavors of the food. Everything was spectacular. To start we had the scallops that were probably the best scallops I've ever had. They were perfectly seared. They were served with deep fried spinach. That was sooo good. We had the sirloin steak and the swordfish. Definitely recommend trying those. The steak was cooked perfectly. It had chimichurri sauce over it and home fries and creamed spinach. The swordfish was served with brocollini, mashed potatoes, and sautéed vegetables. For dessert we got the brownie sundae. I don't particularly like sweets, but that brownie was delicious and warm and perfect. read more

This review is only for the restaurant at Garnet Hill Lodge. We were visiting the area and a friend had recommended the lodge as a good dining experience. When our group of six arrived, we saw that the lodge overlooked the Adirondack Mountains. It was twilight, very cool for a mid-August night, but the lodge had astonishing views of the mountains and the valley below. It took a good 15 to 20 minute ride on a pebble-strewn road to get there, but the charming lodge decked out in Adirondack-style furnishing made for a very inviting atmosphere. There were two separate dining rooms, one was long and narrow, facing the mountains, the other, which was larger, had a huge fireplace with many tables and a small seating area near the fireplace where guests could warm up. Before coming to the Lodge for dinner, make sure that you call ahead of time because they may have a very limited menu when their executive chef isn't there. The staff kindly told us when we made our reservation. Now for the good stuff! The food! Here's a list of what we had: Shrimp Cocktail Mojito Marinated Lamb Pan Seared Jumbo Sea Scallops Miso Duck Butter Spaghetti (kid's menu) Homemade Veggie Soup Raspberry Pie a la mode All I can say is that that the presentation and food quality were excellent! I've attached several pictures to my review. The shrimp cocktail had excellent snap to the bite. The marinated lamb was cooked medium which was alright, but I should have asked for a medium rare. The mint sauce was just right for the gamey lamb. As for the sea scallops, they were cooked just right with a citrus accent. The rice was a bit nice and tender as a pilaf should be. The miso duck was more medium to well done, but less gamey than the lamb. The outstanding dish in my opinion was the raspberry pie. They also offered an blueberry version that was served a la mode, but the thing that I enjoyed most was the pie crust, I mean the bottom portion, tasted just as good as the top. How did they manage that? Anyhow, we were all satisfied with our meals and also to the service levels. We noticed that there were some downstate New Yorkers in the dining room along with those who seemed like locals. I really enjoyed that blend and the quiet serenity of the dining room. There wasn't any music playing to give anyone a headache and you can really carry a conversation in the dining room that I was in. I can highly recommend Garnet Hill Lodge as a dining destination. Stayed here yesterday and was enamored by the beautiful, verdant premises. I took my dad here for his 73rd birthday and intended to stay in two separate rooms for two nights. However, my dad was being difficult and wanted to switch to one room as we were unaware the buildings wouldn't be adjacent to each other and he didn't want me walking around at night lest an animal maul me to death. Anyway, the staff was very understanding and accommodating. Dinner was delicious as well. This is the place to go if you're into hiking, biking, or water activities, and I would love to return with a more active Other. read more

For entrees, 2 of us ordered the cod. 2 ordered the duck, 1 salad with salmon (pictured). All delicious. 1 ordered the ratatouille with polenta, not great. Garnet Hill Lodge was a dream come true for us. We came from New York City dreaming of solitude and time away from the city. We got just that! Beautiful views, great lake to swim and kayak in, and wonderful hiking trails to the mine and around swamps/lakes. Absolute bliss! It was amazing! I am giving three stars instead of five because of the service in the restaurant. The first night we had a waitress who was absolutely amazing. I think she was Russian and a sweetheart. We got two steaks which were both ordered medium and delivered well done. My husband decided to just finish his and I gave mine back because it was so well done it was hard to cut through. We got one new steak which was medium and DELICIOUS and, even through the hiccup, the night was great. The second night was a different story. We went into the restaurant and we had a different waitress. She was a bit older, American, unfortunately I don't remember her name. She was so awful! At one point she basically called me a liar for telling her that the night before we ordered medium steaks and got well done (I was telling her about this not as a complaint, but because we ordered steaks again and wanted to make sure they were medium) She told me "Well, that's very hard to believe"... I mean what do you say to our server after this? We ordered a bottle of wine, appetizers and desserts as well, so our bill was pretty big. The waitress was so bad that it seemed like we are at the corner tavern in NYC and not in this great restaurant in the lodge. We decided not to tip very well (in my opinion we should have not tipped at all and spoken to the front desk right away about this). At the very end of our stay we were looking over our bill at the front desk and I saw a much bigger tip left for the second night. When I asked the front desk about it they said that they charge a minimum 18% tip. What's the point of having an empty space for your tip on the check if they will charge what they want anyway. We left a 30% tip on the first night, but the second night didn't deserve a penny! We finally straightened it out and I told them we had an issue with the waitress. They lowered our tip for that night. It was sort of disturbing that, when someone sees such a low tip, instead of asking what went wrong, they take it upon themselves to increase the tip without your knowledge. Somehow the higher tip that we left the night before didn't automatically get reduced to the 18%, but the lower one did. Either way that situation was very fishy. The entire experience at the lodge was great except for this one incident. It's funny how one hiccup can leave a bad taste in you mouth. read more

I was very impressed with both the food and the service at Garnet Hill Lodge, and I look forward to dining there again next summer. My wife and I are vegans. When I called to inquire about vegan options, the hostess said that the chef could make something for us. So we made a reservation for dinner for two. Well, as it turned out, the chef made a spectacular meal for us. She created a delicious curry, made with coconut milk, vegetables, and cashews -- on a bed of rice. Our waitress informed us that the chef had called her brother, who is a vegan, and asked him to recommend a recipe. The meal was both delicious and filling. We also really enjoyed the pre-dinner bread and olive oil / balsamic vinegar. Everyone was also very nice to us. When we arrived for dinner, the hostess smiled warmly and said, "Oh, the vegans! We've been expecting you". We had arrived early, so we ordered drinks from the bar and sat outside on the lawn, overlooking the lake. What a beautiful view! Later in the evening, when I was looking for the men's room, another employee noticed that I looked lost, so he very graciously walked me all the way to the restroom. I was so impressed by everyone's attentiveness. All in all, it was a great night. My wife and I didn't stay at the lodge, but we certainly enjoyed our dinner in the restaurant. We'll be back next year! This might become an annual tradition. read more

This Resort is incredible!!! It's rustic and authentic and the Cross-Country Trails are outstanding!!! The trails are perfectly groomed and they have something for every skill level, you can take a lesson too. And they offer Lessons for Kids. You can Snow Shoe and Ski and they have snow shoe tours and Moonlight Snow show tours, check the website. At the Ski Center they have the Bobcat Lounge which is a new addition, where you can have a wine or beer and lunch or appetizers, all delicious! They usually have live music on the weekends at the Bobcat Lounge, we love Apres Ski! If you rather go back to main Lodge, they have a full Bar and a restaurant and a cozy fire place, and every meal i have had here has been absolutely Delicious! They have a great Happy Hour on Friday Nights. I have been coming to Garnet Hill Lodge for over 13 years and i have always enjoyed everything about it! It's a beautiful spot in the Adirondack Park where you can feel Nature all around you and unplug. The summer activities are wonderful also, hiking, canoeing and kayaking, swimming in the clean gorgeous lake, and fat tire biking! read more

Loved this little Adirondack gem! Stayed here when a friend and I went up to tune out and get outdoors. We spent time at 13th lake, rode the rev rail (my next post) and hiked. The Lodge was super cute and rustic and the staff was incredibly friendly. The restaurant here caught me off guard and turned out to have delicious fine dining. The only reason I gave it 4/5 stars is bc there was no service/WiFi in our rooms which was detached from the main lodge. However w that said I would absolutely come back to stay here and check out some river rafting. read more

We booked a family room (two adults, three kids) and that's not what we got: we got a smallish three-person room, but we didn't complain. The view from our corner room was a container with trash on one side, and an aluminum exhaust on the other, we still didn't complain. On our second and last morning, there was no hot water. We left unbathed and unshowered. And then we complained. We received a $100 discount on our $430 bill. Not a good experience. read more

We came to the area to do some snowboarding at Gore and ended up falling in love with the cross country skiing . What a gem of a place . From the perfectly groomed trails that lead us to the sugar house for some delicious fluffy pancakes then out again to our shuttle pick up where we ended in a warm cozy pub over looking the frozen lake and the sun setting mountain range . It really was amazing up there . We became addicted to the sport and thought it would be nice to support a local business so we purchased our very own cross country skiing gear and look forward to returning. The staff was great and the other guest were a pleasure to bond with . Hope to return in the spring . read more

Very nice staff. Very helpful. The housekeeper found a lamp for me to read by in bed. The lighting in the hotel is very very low. Bring a flashlight to negotiate the central stairs. The hotel seemed clean enough . Shower didn't work properly. Resorted to a bath but the water wasn't hot, just tepid. Met a Sysco food purveyor truck driving into the place. Didn't expect much but the rolls were stale and the onion tart appetizer Inedible. Very thin walls. Very soft bed with cheap scratchy sheets. No phone, hairdryer, or coffee pot although coffee was available downstairs at 6:30 am. I paid $175 for each night including taxes and a "gratuity for the housekeeper", not optional. Looks like for that price they could have paid the maids. read more

We both had side salads which were very good. My boyfriend got the chicken Marsala, it was an average portion for $20, but was very good. I got the mushroom ravioli for $20, it was very good but very small serving. I received 4 ravioli and had to ask for the vegetables that were listed in the menu. We both ended with pies which we a good price for the serving and very good pie (raspberry and mixed berry). I also had a house merlot which I enjoyed. There's also many 'pub food' options which were better priced and were recommended to try, however, we went for the other meals. Overall, a good experience but I was disappointed in the serving size for the price. read more

I feel bad finding faults with the building that dates back to 1934 but honestly if you let one book a room that actually has non-existing windows, you need to put a big red disclaimer there. We so much wanted a room with the lake view! Our room was small, stuffy with tiny windows overlooking the roof. The air conditioner was very loud and there was no amenities inside whatsoever (not even a microwave). With two kids, we felt bad that we couldn't enjoy the place more because of the crappy room. We do plan to come back to give the place another chance because we now feel bad for those memories read more

The owners, managers, chef, and staff made our wedding exactly what we envisioned. Typically couples talk about "that thing that went wrong" but we can honestly say nothing went wrong. We worked with the folks at Garnet Hill Lodge for a year on our wedding, trying to keep is as simple, yet elegant, as possible with as much Adirondack spirit as we could. The owners and staff have poured a ton of resources into the Lodge in the last year to bring it up to date and provide a greater experience. Our wedding was quite large and we were concerned we were stressing the staff, but just the opposite - they embraced us like family and ensured everything went smoothly. We had guests from overseas and around the country, all in awe of how beautiful the lodge and setting were, and how accommodating and friendly the staff was. If you're looking for a true Adirondack setting this is it. It's not over designed with twiggy sculptures, animal trophies, and pine cone knick-knacks. It's the real deal. And so are the people. The location is remote, by many standards, but for us, that added to the character of the wedding we wanted. We also cross country ski at Garnet Hill Lodge in the winter as well and enjoy every opportunity to stop in for a lunch or dinner. We highly, highly recommend an over-night or two to relax and enjoy all that Garnet Hill Lodge has to offer. read more

While the views and amenities were wonderful, the cleanliness and friendliness of the staff was unacceptable. Our towels, bedding, and pillow cases had dried stains on them. Our trash was left outside of our room for a full day before picked up. The staff was rude. We were never greeted nicely (checking in and checking out). A manager saw us waiting to speak to someone and continued to ignore our presence and then walked away without notifying the staff we were waiting. The women helping us seemed to be offended when asked if there were alternative restaurants around or a place to walk around. She told us there was NOTHING. We went ahead to do our own research and found there were restaurants approximately 18 minutes from the Lodge. Lake George was also a quick 45 minute away. I recommend doing some research of the area as well as plan ahead due to lack of phone service and poor WiFi signal. Unfortunately I would not recommend to a friend or stay at the Garnet Hill Lodge again. read more

We just spent 2 nights there with another couple and had a wonderful time. The lodge was just what we expected for a remote Adirondack lodge. It was rustic with modern conveniences. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The room was nice but a bit warm without a/c. However, we were able to keep our balcony door open and enjoyed the cool mountain breeze. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner there both nights. They do tend to run out of certain entrees, so it's best to plan for an earlier meal time. read more

We have taken an annual winter trip to Garnet Hill for the last few years and I have nothing but great things to say. The rustic lodge and restaurant are so welcoming and it is always a joy to spend time here. The rooms are comfortable but the atmosphere is really what makes it a favorite destination of ours. There is nothing better than coming back from a day of skiing and sitting in front of the large fireplace with a drink. We love it at Garnet Hill and will be sure to continue our winter tradition for many years to come. read more

Waited 15 minutes for a table when there were only 3 others occupied.. service was horrible...after many requests for coffee and milk, finally did self service station.. two meals came out after other two were first finished .. sent back eggs benedick that were two hard boiled eggs on cold English muffin..most food was cold.. gave up on butter for toast after many requests.. very disappointing as I have been here for lovely dinner in the past. only good thing to say about this visit today was the breathtaking view.. read more

The lodge was the intimate setting for our daughter's wedding ceremony. The staff was very professional, friendly and accommodating.

You can't beat the ambiance of this place. The rustic building, large fireplace and mountain/lake views just can't be beat, especially when you have just come up from the city. This is what an escape is all about. You can't help but relax and get into a holiday mindset. We enjoyed just sitting by the fire with a drink before and after a great dinner, no need to rush. The restaurant was very accommodating to our toddler (she was more than welcome to be there). Skiing was a ton of fun, both on the cross country trails at Garnet Hill and down at Gore Mountain. We made it down to the lake (covered in snow) and can't wait to see it again during the summer months. read more

Located between Gore and Indian Lake off of Route 28, the recently reopened lodge contains one of the area's most beautiful dining rooms. The rustic setting is country casual, complete with a piano in the dining room. If you're lucky the owners, Don and Mindy, will serenade you during dinner. This is strictly for the dining area, and strictly related to the level of hospitality extended to three tired and cold xc skiers who popped in at 1:30 pm for some beer and food. And that level was "eek, wethinks not". Last Saturday we skiied their fab 4-star xcski course for a couple of hours in frigid conditions then headed to the Lodge. Jackpot! we thought--a bar with local brews on tap, a spot at the fireplace to warm our frozen toes, a virtually empty dining room. We grabbed beers, settled at the fire with its couches and table, then tried to catch the eye of one of the two waitresses who were serving exactly one table apiece. No luck. They seemed blind to our attempts. Finally one of us walked over to the path to kitchen and asked politely whether we could be served, that we were ready to order a bunch of food. (And I might add, to tip super generously, because that's the right thing to do at these brave upstate winter outposts!) "I'll be right with you," she replied. But in fact, she did not return, but sent over the manager instead. Unsmiling, inhospitable and with an unacceptable message: We can't /won't serve people fire side. Really, a lodge in midwinter that wont serve cold patrons next to a warm fire? In an otherwise nearly EMPTY restaurant? Worse, not a smiling, jovial brush off but really putting out the "you are not welcome" face--and bad on you, waitress, for escalating rather than just smilingly splaining you can't serve that comfortable hearthside table but promise to take extra good care of you at that nearby table. We had a similar experience last year, so this kind of seals it for us--we left and won't be back. We ended up fireside at Frederick's in Bolton, soup and smiling service at the ready--if you need a lesson in hospitality, Garnet Lodge, stop by sometime. read more

Came up for Sunday brunch. Lodge was basically empty and we were told 10 minute wait. No problem, went outside, breathtaking view. Came back in and were seated. Took our order and brought coffees back. No milk and sugar and no spoons. We had to ask twice for milk and sugar and ended up getting it ourselves. Food was awful! Eggs Benedict had to be returned, cinnamon buns turned out to be raised bread French toast. Toast got cold waiting on butter. Home fries were cold.. Waiter never asked us how we were, never refilled water glasses... A total mess.. giving it one star only for the view!!! read more

So did a quick overnight with my gf. Stayed off campus from the inn at the birches but it was a quick 30 second drive to the inn. Room was huge, clean and warm w a giant bed. The inn is classic Adirondack...big fireplace and decked out for the holidays. So it's kind of open seating for dinner and there's a really nice bar tucked in the back. The bourbon selection is outstanding. We had winter squash fritters (gf thought they were just ok but I loved them), pork and bean soup, delish and she had chicken and biscuits and I had "uptown" pot roast. They just nailed it w classic comfort food at a classic inn. We finished w a really tasty pecan pie. We went back in the am for breakfast which I isn't realize was included wrong the room. And it was a bit ridiculous in a good way. Giant stack of flap jacks w fried eggs on top, generous portion of breakfast sausage and good coffee. Worth it just for dinner. read more

n January my husband and I visited Garnet Hill for the first time. It was a splurge for us but we decided it was worth it... stress/hours working, and an upcoming visit for me to family to help out during my mom's surgery... We had a wonderful time. The 24 hour getaway was perfect- romantic, fun, relaxing. We had a great time skiing and enjoyed our beginner lesson. It was perfect for us as a combination- romantic beautiful place to stay/restaurant/cozy and skiing. I loved that we could stay in the lodge with the restaurant and our room view was great. The lodge was full that week end and we saw people of all ages having a great time. I thought it was cool that the guests with kids could enjoy their time visiting in the dining room while the older kids could do things in other areas and check in- such an easy, safe space.... We did have some trouble with plumbing, and were more than compensated for the inconvenience. We went back to Garnet Hill this past week end and there were few guests... We had the pool table to ourselves, and had a made to order breakfast + fruit/cereal/danish buffet. AWESOME blueberry pancakes. I also had a great steak. Last visit I had duck which wasn't as good. Skiing was great even though not all the trails were open. Everything was easy, and we really appreciated that we felt welcome regardless of our skiing ability or age or $. read more

The wait staff was attentive to a fault, no question was answered by a simple 'yes' or 'no'; this is not the place to go if you're in a hurry. I've done my fair share of national and international travel and Garnet Hill far exceeded my expectations. I'll admit that when you think of "an out-of-the-way, in-the-middle-of-nowhere" destination, you begin to conjure up certain (negative) stereotypes about what you'll find. Garnet Hill was none of those things. If I typed all day I don't believe I could properly articulate all of the goodness that this place has to offer. Let me start with the big guns... the campus is breathtakingly beautiful and the staff was bend-over-backwards accommodating. Seriously, there was NOTHING that we asked that wasn't given an immediate "yes" or at minimum, "Let me see how I can help you with that." And I love that they really put their trust in their guests. There's no micro-managing. There's no part of the space that feels like Big Brother is hovering over your shoulder. I believe that every guest gets the get-away that they were seeking and that's totally due to the amazing staff. The rooms in the main house are just as incredible as the rooms in the private villas. Downside? You are absolutely away from civilization, so to speak. Once you're there, there is no "running to" the deli, market, or any other convenience that a major city offers. Once you come to terms with that you don't even mind it, because it really allows you to do what you came to such a place for -- relax, rejuvenate, and recharge your battery. I promise I don't work for the company, a friend and I stumbled upon this place via Groupon, and we are so grateful that we did. That won't be the last time we see this hidden gem.
