Garde is one of those places where the owners are higher and mightier than thou. Upon entering, not one Hello or acknowledgement is ever given. I'm not one of those people who likes pushy or overly attentive sales staff, but this place is the total opposite. If you happen to speak to the owners - an elderly woman and man - it's your lucky day. They can hardly waste their breath to speak to you. Sometimes, you may encounter a young woman who is friendly and helpful, but they have such a high staff turnaround, she probably won't last long. It's really a shame because they do have a great curation of pieces but their attitude is so appalling that it doesn't matter how good the it is, you enter and leave with such a bad taste that you would never buy anything from them (I'll buy my Roly Poly chair from 1st Dibs, thank you). I have never written a review on yelp before but felt compelled to do so after the worst experience in a store ever a few weeks back that my client and I unfortunately can't stop thinking about. I had bought from Garde online before over the years but never been in person until they recently opened a new store here in NY. Me and my client were immediately approached by a man who introduced himself as the owner who then proceeded to follow us around the store talking all the while a dime a dozen real loud and obnoxious. Not only did we not want this it made us extremely uncomfortable, especially as he was so incredibly unpleasant about all of his clients and staff and even some of the artists they were showing. He would not go away or leave us alone did not get the hint at all. This man complained about multiple staff members to us also mentioned several very well known designers by name as being hard to work with (in his view)despite us showing zero interest in hearing it as some of these people are friends and industry peers of mine, it felt so unprofessional and indiscreet. There was a young girl working in there who must have been so awkward, she seemed friendly and polite would rather have talked to her. My client asked me if we could just leave and said she didnt want to buy anything from a place like this with such little respect for their clientele and represented artists. She is a collector and loves discovering new artists but was very upset at the lack of respect. If i sold through them I would be P*SSED at the way they talked about me as well as the buyers of my work, I have lived in NY for 20 years and never once had such a bad feeling about someone in my industry. Horrible man horrible day and I will never purchase for clients from here ever again and will advise others to do the same. What a way to run a business, great job guys read more

Update: Garde's owner contacted me and explained that a friend was watching the shop in the absence of one of the owners who was having health issues. Their quick response and attention to customer service has redeemed them and I plan on making a trip back to the shop to look at their beautiful wares. Garde is a fine gift shop with a burgeoning variety of items including jewelry, pottery, art books, blankets, pillows and much more. Many items are imported or made by artisans in the US. The variety of blankets was impressive. I had actually decided I was going to buy a blanket today as a gift and Garde pleasantly had exactly what I wanted: something that isn't mass produced or readily available in department stores. I wanted a blanket that would be cherished for a long time. Garde had cashmere blankets but I decided to go with an imported thick cotton cable stitch blanket. As for price, items run the full range. It really depends on what you're looking for. I thought some of the pottery was very affordable. read more

Garde is airy, warmly modern and filled with a divinely curated selection of home goods and gifts. This is the place to shop for hard to find brands such as Mad et Len candles, Injiri Clothing from India, Lindsey Adelman glass pieces, pillows and quilts from Tina K of Denmark. read more

Dont know why people dont like this store. The owner and sales staff have always been lovely. They dont run over to greet you or try to sell you things. They are really classy as is their stuff. Beautifully merchandised and their shop in Summerland is even more amazing. I love to shop there. Not cheap but then amazing unusual stuff never is! read more

I has a complete Pretty Woman experience in the store today. The saleswoman didn't want me sitting in the chair or touching any of the merchandise. She told me the price of something as if it were going to be too much money for me to buy. It wasn't, but they will never be getting a dime from me. I am an interior designer here in Los Angeles and this is one of my favorite shops to visit. Garde is impeccably curated. However, I am blown away at the ruddish snobbery displayed by the owners. Every time I enter, instead of a friendly hello I am admonished with a blatant look up and down. It's something you might expect for New York but not In the happy city of Angels! I am young, but I am a successful designer with a wide range of clientele. I do not appreciate the lack of help or decency every time I enter such a beautiful store! This is the experience throughout the design community... I am not the only one who has witnessed this behavior unfortunately.. how about treating all your customers as equals worthy of your time! read more

This review is for the recently opened Summerland location. As some of the other reviewers have mentioned, I did not feel welcomed. I felt underwhelmed after the hype this store received in some recent publications (there is one small chicken coop in the corner of the outdoor area as if to check off some kind of sustainability box). The proprietor at the time of my visit was the older woman with the over-worked face. When we walked in, no greeting just a glance - she was too busy gossiping with two other older women (who eventually left the store without having purchased anything). Perhaps it was because we were under dressed/under aged compared to her normal Montecito clientele? I left with a $600 basket because I was in a rush to find a gift for someone but wish I had had time to spend this money elsewhere. It's a shame that such great designers like Faye Toogood and Apparatus are repped by this place. read more

I've been there a couple times in the last year, but I dropped by over the weekend and the experience so inspired me that I had to write it up. The store is so beautiful, I wish I could move into it and live there. It has unique items that few other stores carry. Beautiful and elegant, I find myself discovering treasures that I have been needing but didn't know it. How did I settle for a black leather portfolio with notepad when there were Pinetti journals in soft pebbled leather to be had -- for display, for use, for inspiration. The jewelry, the amazing assortment of throws, the distinctive handbags -- all are displayed with casual elegance. The service is terrific -- no pressure at all, but they make you feel welcomed. I'm looking forward to going back and picking up some holiday gifts! read more

Such incredible and unique items and the most helpful and friendly staff. Whenever I go to browse I end up getting something I love and when I go to buy presents for my friends they always love them. You can't go wrong buying from Garde read more
