I used to visit here when they were in the main area of Abbot Kinney, but I'm glad they moved to the space because it's much bigger and it's easier to find parking. The space still has a variety of goods from different artists, both local and International. I came here looking for some new mugs or dishes since they have a great selection of pottery artists. I think they might've been sold out of a lot because there was quite a lot of shelf space so I ended up not walking away with any new ceramics but I did buy a watch and specialized clippers. You'll definitely find something you might need or discover an artisan instrument to add to your collection.

My husband and I always wondered what "Tortoise General Store" was, so we felt the need to pop in over the weekend. What IS this place? A 7-Eleven type store, a liquor shop, a small grocery store?  Never mind the kimono I was wearing, I had no idea how appropriate it would be.... Upon entering, a curation of Japanese goods welcomed us as we perused the shelves. Clothes, pottery, watches, shoes, lights, décor and more at this trendy yet cultured store. The lady behind the counter was friendly and said it'd be no problem to take some photos, wahoo! With LA's incredibly diverse population, it's normal to walk into a store and feel like you've been transported to that country. That's what happens in Tortoise, you're transported to Japan. The store feels like a museum as well, with pottery and items on display that are so pretty you don't know if you can buy them or not, (but guess what, you CAN)!  If you dig culture, minimalist style, items for your home and love to shop locally then you must stop in Tortoise! They have some really amazing gifts and home goods in this store, even if it is a bit bougie and overpriced.

Very cool store with lots of items from Japan and other unusual high-end items. I can't wait to go back.

In other words, a lot of cool stuff that's hard to categorize as being together under one roof, but all well-worth browsing. It's a different shop than most in the area because it's smaller and often the owner/manager is basically just sitting at his desk working or tinkering. I know some ceramics and jewelry caught the eye of my wife and I was especially interested in a sort of space-age looking stereo receiver in the front window. It was incredibly expensive at many thousands of dollars. Hey, a boy can dream. They also have featured artists on a monthly basis with unique works you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else. Come in just to find something totally unique.

The Best Gift Shop on Abbot Kinney…read more Chariots on Fire is a small store that carries hard to find jewelry, pottery, and unique fragrances, and contemporary ceramics. They have a unique selection of goods that you cannot find anywhere. I do a lot of poetry and visual art, and coming in here almost felt like walking into a modern museum. Every piece of jewelry, home décor or unconventional flower pots seems to have a message that reaches out to you once you catch a second glance. It's not as if you are buying home goods and decorations, but every piece in this store has a story to tell. There is that old saying " You should seek to understand, and then be understood", but at this store its almost a liaison between you and your sense of style. When you buy a piece at Chariots on Fire and place it in your house, people will see it and try understand its meaning; but ultimately they will understand you. Very few stores have had the ability to do this with the merchandise they carry. Chariots on Fire is truly one of the best hidden gems on Abbot Kinney in Venice!

I bought $862.80 in new sheets, duvet cover , quilt and shames in 2021. It looked beautiful. But…read morethen the fitted sheet became very thin and ripped just in 2 years. I was so disappointed but because I had the full set I repurchased however they no longer carried the original color Sand so I had to get Bone. Then in 2025 the same thing happened to the quilt, the linen just disintegrated. Again because I had the whole set I felt forced to repurchase the quilt or have to replace my entire bedding. So I did. Now the quilt Bone color doesn't match the shame bone color, it's much darker. There are way better companies out there that make lasting bedding products with matching colors. I definitely would not recommend this company and will not buy another item even if that means replacing my entire bedding. Also check the complaints on Better Business Bureau, they sound so similar to mine.

I paid $600 for Parachute's linen sheet set in 2024, expecting premium quality. I'm a hot sleeper,…read moreso breathability and softness were my priorities, and at first, it seemed like the sheets delivered. I followed every single washing instruction to the letter, never mixed them with other laundry, and took perfect care of them. Then the problems started. Not just after years of use, but within the first year. The sheets constantly shed little balls of linen that ended up all over the floor under my bed. At first, I thought this was "normal" wear after a couple washes, but no, it never stopped. And now, barely a year later, I woke up to find the fitted sheet completely ripped, literally falling apart in my hands. When I reached out to Parachute support, their response was essentially: too bad. I was told I was 15 days past the warranty, so they wouldn't do anything. Let me get this straight: $600 sheets disintegrate in a year, and the company hides behind a technicality instead of standing behind their so-called "premium" product? That's laughable. Parachute markets themselves as luxury, but what you actually get is overpriced, low-quality bedding that doesn't even last a year. The fact that customer service shrugged it off says everything about the brand, they care about your money, not your experience. Save yourself the money and frustration. I'll never buy from Parachute again, and I'd warn anyone considering it: these sheets are a total scam. I have so many more photos of this whole sheet just falling apart, if you want them DM me.
