We hired Floor Shield NW to apply a polyaspartic coating on our garage floor. I wish I had never hired them. I'll share the good and bad aspects of our experience and hope this is helpful to others looking to make a decision.
The positive - The proprietor, Trey, is polite and pleasant to talk to. In fact we hired them even though their bid was higher than others, because we liked Trey's manner.
Now for the negatives, and unfortunately there are many.
1. Very poor quality of work. They applied the coating very badly, and it has several issues. The coating is applied so unevenly that we have severe water logging in the garage. Secondly, within days it was already cracked in several places even where the underlying floor was totally level. Thirdly, the coating is supposed to be stain resistant but on the contrary, even leaves are leaving behind stubborn stains that seem impossible to get rid of.
2. Gross misrepresentation: Prior to engaging them we were very clear that we needed a product that would have no VOC emissions, because we have a very vulnerable family member. This was the main reason we chose polyaspartic as opposed to epoxy. Trey was very explicit that the product did not contain VOCs and was odorless. Our actual experience was very different. There was a very strong odor in the garage for several days, so bad it was hard to stay in the garage for more than a few seconds. This led me to suspect that there was VOC off-gassing and sure enough, my air quality monitor detected an elevated level of VOCs beyond the healthy limit. Then when I raised this concern, Trey shared an ingredients list which showed high concentrations of benzene, a known VOC and carcinogen. It's shocking that he made blatantly false claims before we got into contract. Secondly, prior to getting into contract, Trey assured us that we'd be able to use our garage within a couple of hours on the same day. Once the work was performed Trey told us that we couldn't bring anything into our garage for 24 hours, and our cars only after 48 hours.
3. Amateurish organization: The entire operation seems to be very amateurish, from their lack of knowledge of the product or ability to apply it correctly. There was not even a proper invoice provided - even after I requested it.
I am now saddled with the problem of remediating the issue for which I cannot rely on them because their product is harmful and they don't seem to have the technical know-how to apply the coating properly. Full disclosure- they offered a small monetary credit in lieu of their warranty. But that doesn't even begin to cover the cost I will have to incur to get the coating redone. read more
